JOHN A. WAGHENDORF, F MUKWONAGO, WISCONSIN.
TRAP-NEST.
' Mukwonago, in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trap- Nests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to nests for poultry and more particularly to an attachment for the same for trapping a fowl.
The primary object of my invention re- 7 sides in an improved retaining or guarding means mounted on a nest having means as erated by the fowl upon entering the nest.
Another object of my invention resides in the construction of the supporting means for the retaining means, which forms the dual purpose of supporting the retaining means and for preventing the movement of the same after the latter has been operated.
' A further object of my invention resides in the improved construction of the retaining means and the novel means formed integral therewith by which the same is mounted upon the nest.
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efiicient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connec tion with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partly in section showing the interior of the nest; Fig. 2 IS a front elevational view of the same showing especially the manner of mounting the retaining means and the supporting means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide a nest 1 preferably in the form of a rectangular compartment, one end of which is provided with an opening 2 for allowing the ingress of a fowl,

and the interior thereof is provided with a transversely extending partition 3, the rear part of the compartment being used as the nest proper and has disposed therein a suitable nesting material t. Pivotally mounted upon the sides of the nest 4, through the oppositely disposed alining openings 5 and disposed in front of the openings 2 is'my im proved guarding 0r retaining means generally designated 6, the latter being associated with my improved supporting means generally designated 8 pivotally mounted on the upper surface of the nest and arranged through the spaced longitudinal slots 7 adj acent the openingQ. The guarding means in this instance consists essentially of a single piece of metal, preferably rod metal of a substantially U-shaped configuration, the arms 9 and 10 of which are arranged in close relation with the sides of the nest 1, the extreme inner ends being bent upon themselves as at 11 to form substantial hook members for engagement with the openings 5 in the sides of the nest. The vertex 12 of the U is arranged in transverse relation across the nest and is at times disposed in front of the opening 2 and prevents the fowl within the nest from gaining its freedom. The guarding means further consists of another piece of rod metal of a substantially U-shaped form, the vertex 13 of which being arranged in spaced relation with the vertex 12 and the arms 14 and 15 being arranged in close rel lation with the sides of the nest, the inner ends of the arms being bent upwardly as at 16 and twisted and engaged as at 17 upon the arms 9 and 10.
For the purpose of supporting the guard ingor retaining means, I have provided the supporting means generally designated 8 which in this instance consists essentially of a single piece of metal similar to the metal used in making the supporting means of a U-shaped configuration, the vertex 18 rests upon the upper surface of the nest adjacent the opening 2 and is pivotally mounted by means of a suitable fastening device preferably a staple at a point approximately inter-- mediate its ends, the arms 19 and 20 of the retaining means being disposed through the longitudinal slots 7 in the upper surface of the nest and have. their free "ends bent at right angles and arranged to form substantial hook members 21 for receiving the vertex 13 of the guarding means, the hook members being normally disposed in front of the opening 2 and have their extreme outer ends bent outwardly as at 22 to form a stop for the guarding means. after the same has been released by the entrance of a fowl into the nest.
The operation of my device is as follows:
The vertex. 13. of the guarding means 6 is disposed upon the hook membersv 21 of the supporting means 8 and when a fowl is en tering the nest through the opening 2, the guarding means being. normally supported in close relation and substantially parallel with the top of the nest and as the. space between the lower part of the opening 2 and the vertex 13 of the guarding means is not large enough to permit the passage of thefowl therethrough, when the fowl is en tering, the back of the same will lift the vertex. 13 from the supported position upon the hooks, whereupon the supporting. means 8 will. rotate about its pivot into the interior of the compartment allowing the guarding means to fall and close the opening 2. When the hook members maintain a settled position they are disposed slightly in front of the sides of the opening 2 and the curved ends 22' thereof are disposed in close relation to the vertex 12 of the guarding means and because of this arrangement it can easily be seen that should the fowl. that has been trapped try to regain its freedom, the pressure exerted upon the vertices 12 and 18 will tend to force them upwardly whereupon their movement will be limited by the curved ends 22. In resetting the supporting means, all that is necessary is to v push the inner ends of the hook members 22 understood that I am not limited to the exact details and arrangement shown, as the guarding means .could as well be stamped from a piece of metal ,or cast in one piece to assume a contour substantially similar to the contour of the preferred guarding means. This is also true of the supporting means forthe guarding means. I desire that great stress be laid upon the guarding means having the supporting means associated therewith and accomplishing the dual purpose of supporting the guarding means and preventing movement of the same after the guarding meanshas been released.
From the. above. description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it can easily be seen that. I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and. when assembled can be placed: upon. the market and sold at a. minimum cost.
It is also obvious that the guarding and supporting means can be manufactured separately of the nest and readily applied to various forms of nests, the. one shown. and described merely being for the purpose of clearly illustrating the invention.
It will be, understood that the above descri tion and accompanying drawings compre end only the general and preferred em. bodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and. arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Havin thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secnreby Letters Patent is V A trap nest comprising a compartment open at one end, a guarding member pivotally mounted in the. sides of said compart ment, said guarding member being substantially U-shaped and having the vertex there of disposed in front of said opening, a, hook member pivotally mounted on the outer part of said compartment disposed adjacent said opening for receiving the vertex of the guarding member, the outer end of said hook member being bent outwardly for preventing the upward movement of the guard-- ing member after the same has been released.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. IVACHENDORF.
