CHARLES LURZ, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEWING-MACHINE SUPPORTING AND DRIVING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES LURZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Sewing-Machine Supporting and Driving Device, of which the following is a specification.
In the use of sewing machines for sewing straw hats and similar articles which are adapted to be placed over the front end of the machine bed during the sewing operation, it is desirable that the machine should be supported in such position relatively to the work table as to permit of the convenient handling or manipulation of the work during the sewing operation. To do this it has been the practice to provide machines with a relatively high base whereby the bed or work support of the machine is located at the desired height above the work table. It is desirable, however, that the ordinary or low base sewing machine may also be utilized for the class of work referred to and it therefore has been the main object of my invention to provide means whereby this may be done.
In carrying my invention into effect, I provide a machine supporting and driving device comprising a relatively high frame or standard adapted for detachable connectionwith the usual work table adjacent one edge thereof and having at its upper side a laterally projected machine supporting bed overhanging said edge of the table whereby the machine on said bed will be positioned with an unobstructed space thereabout to permit of the work being conveniently handled with respect thereto during the sewing operation. Also supported on .this frame in suitable bearings is a drive shaft having at one end a clutch member for driving engagement with the pulley of the machine drive shaft and adjacent its opposite end being provided with a drive pulley. lVith this construction and arrangement of parts, any sewing machine suitable for the work required may be readily at-' tached to the supporting bed of the frame in a position overhanging the edge of the table whereby it will be rendered easily accessible for the sewing of hats or similar articles, and the drive shaft on the frame when clutched to the machine drive shaft will constitute an extension of the latter Specification of Letters Patent.

for connection with the drive belt or similar motor in the normal position of the latter for driving the machine when mounted in its usual position directly on the work table.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,Figure 1 represents, in front elevation and section, a sewing machine mounted on a work table by means of a supporting and driving device made in accordance with one form of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
To explain in detail, 1 indicates a"portion of a work table of usual type on which the sewing machines are mounted at suitable distances apart and driven from a 'main drive shaft at the under side of the table through the medium of driving belts; these tables in some instances and as here shown being provided at predetermined dis tances with recesses, as at 2, to permit of the convenient handling by the operator of the workbeing sewed by the adjacent machine.
The machine supporting and driving device of my invention comprises a frame or standard 3 which is adapted to be mounted upon the work table adj acent the recess 2 and be detachably secured thereto by suitable fastening means, such as the table screws-4. This frame at one end thereof and at its upper side is provided with a machine supporting bed 5 which is projected laterally beyond the base of the frame so as to support the machine in an overhanging position, preferably overhanging the edge of .the table as shown, whereby an unobstructed space may be provided for the manipulation of the work with respect to the machine as hereinbefore referred to and as will be clear upon reference to the drawing.
The sewing machine, indicated generally at M, may be det'achably mounted upon the supporting bed 5 in any suitable or desirable manner. As here shown, it is held to said bed by a table screw 6 engaging the same through an elongated slot in the bed 5.
As a means for operating the machine mounted on the bed 5, a drive shaft 8 is journaled in a suitable bearing or hearings on the frame 3 in position for driving connection with the drive shaft of the machine, the said shaft 8 as here shown. having at its front end a clutch. member 9 which is formed with a series of forwardly projectmw 1ng fingers 10 for entering the corresponding device comprismg a standard having at ing openings 11 in the pulley 1.2 on the ma-' chine drive shaft 13. The shaft 8, which is here shown as journaled in two risers or arms 14, 14:, on' the frame 3, is providedat a point between said arms with an attached pulley 15 for engagement by a belt 16 driven from a power transmitter (not shown) at the under side of the work table. The shaft 8 when clutched to the machine shaft as described, thus forms an extension of the latter for connection with the drive belt 16 in the normal position of said belt, 2'. 6., the position of the belt for driving a machine mounted directly on the work table.
As a means to provide for the support of -machines of different kinds and sizes, the
shaft 8 is longitudinally adjustable in its bearings in the arms 14, 14, to permit of its being shifted to a position for clutching engagement with the machine shaft, the means here shown for providing such adjustment of the shaft comprising two collars 17, 17, adjustable on the shaft by set screws '18 and normally engaging the adjacent arms 14. To provide for a further adjustment in effecting such connection between the shaft 8 and the machine shaft, the slot 7 in the bed 5 is made elongated in a direction parallel with the shaft 8 whereby the machine may be shifted relatively to the said shaft in effecting connection therewith. In order to position the machine vertically whereby to bring the machine shaft in alinement with the extension shaft 8, the bed 5 may be made vertically adjustable on the frame?) or else shims may be employed to give the desired result.
The machine supporting and driving device here shown and described provides a rigid support for the machine whereby it may be operated at a high speed without undue vibration.
What I claim is 1. A sewing machine supporting anddriving device comprising a standard having at its upper side'a laterally projected machine- 'supporting bed overhanging its base, a drive shaft supported in a bearing on said standard, and a clutch member on the shaft for engagement with the machine on said bed.
2. A sewing machine supporting and driving device comprising a standard having at its upper side a laterally projected machinesupporting bed overhanging its base, a drive shaft supported in a longitudinally adjustable position in a bearing on said standard,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for and a. clutch member on theshaftqfor engagementwith a machine on said bed.
3. A sewing machine supporting and drivits upper side a laterally projected machinesupporting bed overhanging its base, said bed being provided with an elongated slot to adjustably receive a machine fastening de-' hanging itsbase and adjacent its opposite end having an arm provided with a bearing,
a drive shaft supported in said bearing, and a clutch member on the shaft at that end thereof adjacent the bed for engagement with a machine onsaid bed.
5. In combination, a work-table, a machine'supporting and driving device comprising a standard detachably connected with said tableat one edge thereof and having at its upper side a laterally projected machine-supporting bed overhanging said 'edgeof the table, a machine detachably supported on said bed, a drive shaft mounted insaid machine, a pulley attached to said shaft, a drive shaft supported in a bearing on said standard, and a clutchmember on the latter drive shaft in operative engagement with said machine pulley. Q 7
6. In combination, a work-table, a machine supporting and driving device comprising a standard detachably connected with said table at one edge thereof and having at its upper side a laterally projected machine-supporting bed overhanging said edge of the table, and also having at its upper side two upright arms, a machine detachably supported on said bed, a shaft mounted in said machine, a pulley attached to said shaft, a drive shaft journaled in said" arms on the standard, a clutch member on said drive shaft in operative engagement WltllSZtlCl machine pulley, and a driving pulley mounted in a longitudinally adjustable position on said latter drive shaft at a point between said arms.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 24th day of May, A. D. 1915. I
