NIPPLE-MAKING DEVICE FOR DIE-STOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
Application led May 3, 1915. Serial No. 25,651.
To all whom t may con/:em:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND A. JADIN, a citizen otl the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Nipple-Making Device for Die-Stocks of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for making short nipples with an ordinary die stock, the device being secured to any suitable die stock.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be many modifications thereof.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the die stock having this device applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the die stock with this device applied thereto, the die stock being shown in section and one-half of the nipple threading device being removed for purposes of illustration, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the die holding portion of the die stock with the nipple threading device applied thereto, F ig. 4 is a transverse sectional view oiA the die stock on the line H, Fig. 1, the nipple holding device being shown in full, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view through the nipple threading device on the line 5 5, Fig. 2, and Figs. 6 and 7 are plan views of one of the nipple holding caps, of
. which there may be as many as the desired number of ditferent sized pipes to be threaded.
The numeral 1 represents the body of the die stock, said die stock having handles 2 and 3 threaded thereinto and extending therefrom in a well known manner. The die stock carries dies 4 and 5, which dies are secured to the die stock by means of boltsG and 7 respectively, other bolts 8 and 9 being used to adjust the position of the dies.
Thenipple threading guide comprises a pair of halt' tubular members 8 and 9 which are secured together by bolts 10 and 11 passing through ears 12, 13 14 and 15, said tubular members having clamping portions 16 and 17 which go over a projecting ledge on the edge of the die stock and secure the threading device thereto. It will be observed that these clamps may be used for securing the guide to any type of die stock it may be desired to use the device in connection with.
The nipple holding device comprises a mandrel 19 having a squared portion 18 to conveniently hold the same in a vise while theupper end ot' the mandrel is threaded as indicated at 20 to receive a short socket 21. The socket 21 is threaded so that it will pass the threaded portion of the mandrel at one end While the other end is threaded as indicated at 22 to receive the nipple 23. The socket 21 is of a size for the pipe shown in Fig. 2, but there may be any number ot' the sockets 24 or 25, all of which have an open` ing at one end to pass over the threaded end ot' the mandrel 19, while at the other end they are provided with diiferent sizes of pipe to enable the user to make nipples from any sized pipe he desired to make use ot', suitable dies being placed in the stock for that purpose.
In use one end of a long piece of pipe is threaded, after which it is cut off the proper length for the desired nipple whereupon the threaded end of the pipe is inserted in one of the sockets 21, 24 or 25 as the size of the pipe may require, while the mandrel 19 is inserted in a vise, the jaws of which are illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The clamp formingv the guide for the die stock is then secured to the die stock, whereupon it may be slipped over the mandrel and the threads produced on the unthreaded end of the short nipple.
With this apparatus it is possible to make with any given die stock as short a nipple as is required for any given purpose.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows, modiications within the scope of the claims being expressly reserved:
1. A nipple making device for die stocks comprising a pair of clamps adapted to be secured to the die stock and forming therefor a guide, a mandrel to be used in conjunction with said guide, and a nipple holding socket carried by said mandrel.
2. A nipple making device for die stocks comprising a pair Yot'clamps adapted to be bolted together and secured on the die stock, a mandrel which fits said clamps, and a nipple holding socket threaded on said mandrel.
3. A nipple making device for die stocks comprising a pair of' semi-circular shells each having a member at one end' thereof to conne'ettlie ASan'e' With a die "Stock, bolts to my hand'this 26th yday of April A. D. 1915, hold Said semi-circular Shells together, a in the presence of the two subscribed Witinandrel having one end Squared, and -a nipnesses. ple holding socket screwed on one end of u 5 said mandrel and with 4which mandrel said l/Vitne'sses:
