Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 17, 1913. Serial No. 754,712.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \ViLL-IAM J. Gnoonn'r, a citisen of the United States, and resident of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car couplers and has particular reference to a novel knuckle throwing device for use in connection therewith.
it is a general requirement of many of the railroads that couplers applied for use on their cars must be equipped with knuckle throwing devices; that is, some device by means of which the trainmen may throw the knuckle of the car coupler without the necessity for passing between the cars.
Many such devices have been suggested but in view of the limited space within which a thrower must be installed, the weight of the knuckle and the consequent resistance to movement due to rusting, etc., such devices have not proven altogether satisfactory.
fine of the objects of my invention is to provide a knuckle thrower which shall be extremely simple; which shall operate on the knuckle tail at a point where the greatest leverage may be secured; which shall not cause the movement of the knuckle by reason of frictional or cam engagement and which may be so located as to not interfere with the proper operation of the lock or lifter. r

Figure 1 is a plan view of a coupler embodving my invention, the top wall of the coupler being broken away; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the knuckle completely thrown and illustrating a corresponding position of the knuckle thrower; Fig. 3 is alongitudinal, vertical section through the coupler with the parts in normal position; Fig. 4: is a similar view showing the lock in lock-set position, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the relation of the parts corresponding to that of Fig. 2; that is, with the knuckle fully thrown.
Referring more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that my invention 18 combined with a coupler having a head 10, provided with vertical bearings 11,12, to the rear thereof the former having an open side. On the front wall of the head in the upper portion is provided an abutment or hook 13, with which the lock may cooperate as Will be later described. Mount ed within the coupler head on a pivot pin 142, is a knuckle 15, having a tail portion 16, the rear of which is cut away to form the curved bearing 17, with which the knuckle thrower cooperates. The portion of the knuckle tail which is not cut away forms a pulling hook 18. It will be noted that by such construction the knuckle thrower underlie a portion of the knuckle tail and thereby be held against possible displace ment. Mounted within the coupler head and adapted for vertical movement therein is a locking-block 19, having a groove 20, in its upper forward portion which cooperates with the abutment or hook 18, on the coupler wall. On. the lower rear portion of the lock is a downwardly projecting foot 21, having a bulbous lower end 22, and anotch 23. The notch is adapted to cooperate with a ledge 2 on the coupler wall in order to secure the lock-setting function as shown in Fig. 1.. I provide a lifter having an enlarged lower end 26, slotted to accommodate the staple 27 on the lock. The lower end of the lifter is adapted for movement relative to the lock and in the normal position underlies a lcdge28, on the coupler head to secure an anti-creeping function.
The thrower of my invention is provided with prongs 29, 30, and with trunnions 31, adapted to seat the coupler head. Thus the thrower is mounted for horizontal swinging movement. The short arm 29 of the thrower is adapted to be contacted by the bulbous end 22, of the foot 21,- after the lock reaches the position shown in Fig. 4. Further movem nt from the position of Fig. i will cause the lock to oscillate on the point 13 as a pivot thus swinging the lower portion of the lock rearwardly and causing the rotation of the thrower; The long arm 30 of the thrower is curved as shown and has a point bearing on the curved face 17 of the knuckle tail. The knuckle is thus moved outwardly by rolling contact. The first application of power tending to rotate the knuckle is made at a point farthest removed from the pivotal point of the knuckle thus giving the greatest leverage.
It will be seen that the construction is in the bearings 11, 12, in
extremely simple and rigid; may be easily assembled or the parts removed and is thus particularly suited for general railway use.
It is obvious that modifications may be made in the construction shown and such modifications as are within thescope of my claims I consider within the spirit of my in- "vention.
I claim:
l. A car coupler having a coupler head and a bodily movableknuckle lock capable of being raised and lowered with respect to itslocked position, the top face of the lock inrearof the frontface of the lock and an interior wall of the coupler head having portions dis'posed to cooperate at a point in the upward movement'ofthelock and cause the lo'ck to tilt on further upward movementthereof, and a knuckle opener disposed inthe path of movement of a portion of the lock during the tilting thereof for actuation by the tilting of the lock.

saidfront face of the lock being free from projections, an interior wall of the coupler head having a fulcrum shoulder located in the path of and to cooperate with the groove of the lock during the upward movement of said lock to tilt the lock on said fulcrum shoulder of the coupler head as a center, and a knuckle opener disposed in the path of movement of a portion of the lock during the tilting thereof for actuation by the tilt ing of the lock.
