SWAYNE W. WILLIAMS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1916.
Application led November 14, 1914. Serial No. 872,121.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known t at I, SWAYNE W. Wn.- LIAMs, a citizen o'f the United States, residing at East Orange, Essex county, 1n the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pumps, and the same has for .its ob]ect more particularly to provide a simple, efficient and reliable pump adapted to be operated by a foot pressure, by means of which the fluid may be initially compressed in a large cylinder, and thence further compressed Within a small cylinder, and thence discharged therefrom.
Further, said invention has forits ob]ect to provide a duplex pump comprising a pair of connected cylinders and pistons working Within said cylinders, which pistons are adapted to be alternately depressed and elevated by shifting of the weight of the person standing thereon.
Further, said invention has for its obJect to provide a pump comprising a plurality of connected cylinders within which are disposed rigid piston members and movable cylinder members surrounding said .fixed piston members, provided at their inner ends with heads serving as pistons for said connected cylinders.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a duplex pump in which the air is alternately initially compressed in a cylinder of large area, and thence conducted into a smaller cylinder, and further compressed therein, and thence discharged therefrom and through the outlet of the pump- To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts,-Figure 1 is a side view showing one form of pump constructed according to and embodying my said invention; Fig. 2.15 a central longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 is an end view, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail central sectional views showing the construction and arrangement of the intake and discharge valves located in the xed piston members of the pump.
In said drawings 10 designates the pump as a whole comprising a base 11, and main cylinders 12, 12 arranged side by side and preferably formed integrally with said base 11. Within each of said main cylinders 12, 12 are centrally disposed uprights or fixed piston rods 13, 13 which are provided at their upper ends with heads 14, 14', respectively. The said heads 14, 14 are provided with screw threads adapted to engage with corresponding threads arranged upon the upper' ends of said uprights or fixed pistons. Within the casings 12, 12 are located large piston heads 15, 15 which are secured upon the lower ends of hollow pistons 16, 16 extending through suitable openings provided in the tops 17, 17 of the casings 12, 12, respectively. The hollow pistons 16, 16 which serve as secondary compression chainbers are provided at their upper projecting ends with heads 18, 18 serving as supports for the feet of the operator.
The cylinders 12, 12 are provided adjacent to their lower ends with intake openings 19, 19', provided with check valves 20, 20. Intermediate said cylinders 12, 12 are located vertical supports or standards 21, upon the upper ends of which are pivotally mounted levers 22, 22 having their opposite ends connected to links 23, 23', pivotally secured at their upper ends to lugs 24, 24 extending from the opposite sides of the heads 18, 18, of the hollow pistons or secondary cylinders 16, 16.
Tntermediate the cylinders 12, 12 is secured a discharge nipple 25.which communicates with a horizontal passage 26 provided in the base 11. One end of said passage 23 communicates with a vertical passage 26 provided in the upright or fixed piston rod 13, and is provided at its upper end with an outlet opening 26c controlled by an outlet check valve 27 a, while the opposite end of said horizontal passage 26 communicates with a vertical passage 26b provided in the fixed piston 13 of the cylinder 12. The upright or fixed piston 13 is provided at its upper end with an outlet opening 26c1 controlled by a check valve 27".
28 denotes a horizontal passage provided in the base 11, communicating at one end with a vertical passage 28a provided in the upright or xed piston 13. The upper end of said passage 28EL is provided with an inlet opening 28b controlled by a check valve 29, while the opposite end of said horizontal passage 28 is provided with an outlet 28c opening into the base of the casing 12.
30 denotes a horizontal passage provided in the ibase 11 having one end communicating with a vertical passage 30" provided in the fixed piston 13. The upper end of said passage 30b is provided with an inlet opening 30c controlled by a check valve 31" While the opposite end of said horizontal assage 30 is provided With an outlet opening 30u which communicates with the interior of the cylinder 12.
The outlet valves 27, 27b in the pistons 13, 13 each comprise a horizontal partition 35 having a passage 36 therein, and a spring 37 disposed above said partition 35 serving to hold a ball valve 38 spring pressed against a removable seat 39 which has its edge in screw-threaded engagement with the upper end of said upright or fixed piston, and bearing against a shoulder 40 provided on said fixed piston.
The inlet valves 29a, 31", in the fixed pistons 13, 13 each comprise an inclined valve seat 41 upon which is seated a ball valve 42, held in spring pressed engagement with its iseat by a spring 43 secured in place by an adjustable bearing member 44 maintained in screw-threaded engagement with the outer end of said fixed piston.
The operation of my improved pump is as follows z-In order to operate the pump, it merely becomes necessary for the operator to stand on the heads 18, 18 of the pump and thence, by shifting his weight from one foot to the other, cause ' themovable pistons 16, 16 to be alternately depressed and elevated. As the hollow piston 16 is initially depressed it will cause the air within the cylinder 12 to be compressed by the action of thedescending piston 15 and force the air from said cylinder 12 through the outlet 30, horizontal passage 30, vertical passage 30", through the inlet valve 31b and inlet opening 30c into the hollow piston 16. With the shifting of the weight of the operator to the hollow piston 16 the air contained within said hollow piston 16 above the head 14 therein will be compressed within said hollow piston, and forced into the outlet valve 27, through the vertical passage 26h, passage 26, and discharged through the outlet nipple 25. As the hollow piston 16 is descending the head 15 thereof will cause the air contained within said cylinder 12 to be compressed therein, and forced through the opening 28, horin zontal passage 28, vertical passage 28, in the fixed piston 13, and forced through the inlet valve 291 and inlet 28b therein and into the portion of the hollow piston 16 above the head 14 therein, whence the air will be forced, by the succeeding depression of the piston 16, through the outlet o ening 27,
vertical passage 26, in the fixe iston 13 horizontal passage 26, and be ischarged through the nipple 25.
