. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 25,1916.
Application'filed November 28, 1908. Serial No. 464,824.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBROSE CoNKLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Luray, in the county of Clark and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in road machines, the object being to provide a machine which will have the combined function of a drag scraper, and a ditching machine, it being provided with adjustable means for guiding it with respect to the ditch, so that it will maintain the same rela tive position with respect to the ditch as it is used along the edge of the road.
Another object is to provide means for adjusting the depth of cut at any and all parts of the machine, the adjustment all being within reach of the driver who is seated upon the machine, and a further object is to provide means for changing the application of draft in accordance with the position and work of the machine on the road.
With these several objects in view, my present invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a plan view showing the mold board extending in one direction, and one application of the draft mechanism to the ditch runner folded, Fig. 2 is a plan view showing a form in which the mold board extends in the opposite direction, and the ditch runner extended for operation, and the draft mechanism ready to use with the machine when forming a ditch for operating at the side of the road, Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and, Fig. 4: is a section.
A rigid V-shaped frame A constitutes the main portion of the machine, member 2 of which corresponds to the land side, and member 3 to the mold board, of a plow. These members 2 and 3 are rigidly secured together by bolts or other means at the forward end, and held apart at the rear by means of a brace 4, and at an intermediate point by the brace 4. These members 2 and 3 are the same as in my Patent No. 882,053, granted March 17, 1908, upon which machine the present is an improvement, and as in that machine, member 2 or land side 1 is provided with a straight metal runner 5 or guide bar, and the member 3, or mold board, is provided with a curved cutting blade 5 My present invention is provided with three wheels 6, 7, and 8, one for each of the three corners. The operating mechanisms for these three wheels differ slightly. These wheels arev operated to regulate the depth of the cutting blades of the members 2 and 3. Wheel 6 is journaled at the rear end of abell crank lever 10 which latter turns 011 a fulcrum 11, and a. rod 12 extends from the upper end of this bell crank lever 10 to a segment 13, mounted on the member 2. A worm 14 on the worm shaft 15, engages the teeth of this segment, and a wheel 16 on the upper end of shaft 15 is provided as a convenient means for turning the worm shaft and worm in the adjustment of the wheel 6. hen the wheel 16 is turned to the right, for instance, it pulls the rod 12 rearward, forcing the wheel 6 downward, and raises the forward end of the machine, thus lessening the depth of out at that point. Wheel 7, preferably V-shaped, is journaled at the rear end of a bell crank lever 17 which is fulcrumed on the stud 18, and a rod 19 extends from the upper end of this bell crank lever 17 to an arm 20 on the shaft 21 of the hand lever 22. This hand lever has the usual latch mechanism 23 which operates in connection with a segment 24 for fastening it in position. Hand lever 22 like wheel 16 is located in close proximity to the drivers seat 25, within reach of the operator of the machine. By releasing the latch 23, the lever 22 may be operated for raising or lowering the wheel 7 which will either raise or lower the end of the bar or land side 2 for penetrating very hard ground. When it is desired to have the end of the bar penetrate deeply, the lever is thrown so that the wheel is lowered, causing the machine to be raised, so that the bottom of the memher 2 is at an angle to the surface of the ground, which permits of the machine penetrating deeply into the soil.
lVheel 8 is provided with a shank 26 which is guided in its upward and downward movements between the concave pulleys 27, 27. A lever 28, fulcrumed at 29, engages the lower end of the shank, and this wheel is shown in Fig. 3, and a hand lever 30, similar to lever 22, having a similar latch 31, engaging a segment 32, is L-shaped at its lower end 33, and connected by the rod 34:, to this lever 28, so that by swinging the lever in one direction, it raises the'wheel 8; in the opposite direction it lowers it. This lever also is Within easy. reach of the driver, as shown in Fig. 2, so that he has all points of the machine under control and may regulate the depth of out.
, The ditch runner 35 is pivotally mounted at 36, 36, on the land side member of the machlne. lVhen in use, this runner is spread out, as shown in Fig. 2, and its outer end is adapted to engage and travel'along the edge as a guide to hold the machine to its work on the-slope of the road adjacent thereto, thus making the machine'not only a successful drag scraper upon a more or less'fiat and level stretch, but also an eflicient ditching machine along the sloping sides of'the road. When not in use, this ditching device. may be folded over the center of the machine as shown in Fig. 1, where it is out of the way.
The draft attachment is quite similar to that disclosed in'my patent above referred to, except that in the ditching operation, the
rods 40, 41, and swingle-tree 42 are removed from section .3, and therdouble-tree hook 43 7 may be hooked into the chain 44 at the point desired, so as to bring the draft nearer the point of the machine as shown in Fig. 2.
In this way, I have provided a machine which is equally. useful at any point on the surface of the road,- whether at the sides, and in the formation of the ditches, or at Copies of this patent may be obtained for resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departlng from the spirit and scope of my inven- 'tion, and hence I donot wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but i Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a road machine, the combination with a land-side and mold-board portion converging to a point, of a ditch-runner hinged to the land side in a manner to swing laterally or vertically above the latter.
2. In a road machine, the combination with a land-side and mold-board portion converging to a point, of a ditch runner, hinged to the machine at points longitudinal thereof and in a manner to swing laterally to gage the position of the machine with respect to the furrow or ditch previously cut.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
