To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed and Pres sure Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to feeding and presser mechanisms for machines for making paper roll plugs, and it consists in the novel instrumentalities hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of means for feeding the stick through the machine at intervals to position the same so that the plug may be formed at the end thereof and out therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a gravity means for holding the stick down against the bed of the machine as it is moved toward the saw, while the plug is being formed and cut therefrom.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and then particularly pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the feeder and pressing mechanism. Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail elevation of pivot means for a lever. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 4- is a longitudinal sectional view of the same cut on the line 4 '1 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the same cut on the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same cut on the line 66 of Fig. 8. 1
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The machine comprises a frame 1, which includes standards 2. The upper portion of the frame is approximately rectangular in plan, and the standards 2 may be of any suitable design or configuration. A mastershaft 8 is journaled for rotation in the lower portion of the standards 2, and is provided at one end with pulleys 4: by means of which power may be applied to the said shaft. A countershaft 5 is journaled in the standards 2 above the shaft 3, and said fixed to the countershaft 5, brackets 8 de pend from the intermediate portion of the upper part of the frame 1 and a shaft 9 carries a pinion 10 which meshes with the gear wheel 7. A pulley 11 is loosely journaled upon the shaft 9 and a pulley 12 is fixed to the mastershaft 3. A belt 13 is trained around the pulleys 11; and 12 and is adapted to transmit rotary movement from the mastershaft 3. to the pulley 11. A clutch member 1a is slidably mounted upon the shaft 9, but is constrained to rotate in unison with the same. This clutch member is adapted to be brought into contact with the pulley 11 whereby the shaft 9 is caused to rotate in unison with the said pulley. The clutch member 1 1 may be in the form of any ordinary friction clutch in general. use. An arm 15 is pivoted between its ends, to a U- shaped bracket 15 by a bolt 15. This bracket is rigidly secured to one side of one leg 2 as shown and one end of the said arm engages the clutch member 1 1. A bell crank lever 16 1s fulcrumed' to the frame 1 and one end thereof engages the arm 15,
the other end of the lever 16 is provided with a handle and a pawl 18 whichv is adapted to engage a pivoted rack 19 mounted upon the frame 1. Therefore it will be seen that by swinging the bell crank lever 16 so that the arm 17 moves upwardly, the arm 15 will be turned upon its pivotal connection with the frame 1, and the clutch member 1 may be moved as to cause the shaft 9 to rotate with the gear wheel 11. Inasmuch as the pinion 10 carried by the shaft 9 meshes with the gear wheel 7, the said gear wheel is rotated and through the said wheel rotary movement is transmitted to the countershaft 5.
A bed 48 is mounted upon arms -19 which are adjustably secured in lugs 50 provided upon the top of the frame 1. These lugs are slotted as at 51, and the end portions of the arms 49 pass through said slots. The arms are secured in adjusted positions upon the lugs by means of nuts 52 which are screw threaded upon the arms and are adapted to bear against the said lugs. Ad
justing screws 53 pass through the upper portions of the lugs 50 and engage the arms 49 and by turning the screws 53 the arms 49 maybe adjusted vertically, and then by tightening thenuts 52 the said arms are secured at adjusted positions. 'A cutter 45 is located at the delivery end'of the bed 18 and may be operated in any suitable manner from the shaft 5. A saw 28 is also lofcated at the delivery end of said bed. A

These guides 51 and 55 extend longitudin'ally of the bed: and are spaced apart and are adapted to receive a stick between them; Standards65 and 66 are supported upon thebed between arms 49 and a shaft 67 is journaled in the said standards. A dentate wheel 68 is fixed to the shaft 67 and an arm 69 is pivoted upon the said shaft. The arm 69 is provided with a pawl 7 0 which is adapted to engage the teeth of the wheel 68 whereby the arm 69 is fixed with" relation to' the shaft 67. Ratchet wheels 71 and 72 are fixed to theshaft' 67 "and are located-adjacent eachother. These I wheels are provided with peripheralteeth which are disposed in opposite'directions. Anarm'73 is pivoted upon the shaft 67 and carries pivoted pawls 74c and 75. The pawl 74 is adapted to operate upon the teeth of h the ratchet wheel .71 and the pawl 75 is adapted to operate upon the teeth of the ratchet wheel 72. Lugs 76 are carried by the arm 73 and a rod .7 8'is slidably journaled in said lugs. A handle 79 is fixed to the upper end of the rod 78 and is provided :with a shoulder 80 'which'engages the edge of the lugs 76. A stop 81 is. fixed to the rod 78 and between the lower lug 76 and stop 81 is a coil spring. 82 hearing at one end against the stop 81 and at its other end against the lower lug; 76. The lower lug 76 is adapted to limit the swinging I movement of the pawls'l' l and 75. A cam 83 is carried at the lower end of the rod 78; this cam is adapted to engage one or the other or both of the pawls 7A or 75, and when inengagement with either one of the pawls, it moves the pawl with which it is provided at its extremity witha roller 88 which is received in a cam groove 89 provided upon a head 90 fixed to the countershaft 5. Therefore it will be seen that as the countershaft 5 rotates, the cam 89 will swing the lever 85 whereby the bar 84: is
'moved longitudinally and the arm 69 is swung. This turns the shaft 67 in one direction for the reason that the pawl engages the teeth of the wheel 68 when the arm 69 moves in one direction and escapes the teeth of the said wheel, when the arm 69 moves in the opposite direction. A sprocket wheel 91 is fixed to the shaft 67 and is'adapted to operate an underfced mechanism which forms no part of this invention.
Arms 92 are pivoted upon the shaft 67 and are provided upon their upper sides with lugs 93. A lever 94 is fulcrumed to the standard 65 and extends transversely across the upper portion of the machine.
A weight 95 is mounted upon said lever. The standard 65 is provided with teeth 96 and a pawl 97 is pivoted upon the lever 91- and is adapted to'engage the teeth 96. A bar 98 is pivotally connected with the intermediate portion of the lever 94 and is provided at its lower end with arms 99 which extend between the lugs 93. Bolts 100 pass through the lugs 93 and extend transversely across the end portion of the arms 99.
The weighted lever 9ft together with the bar 98 and arms 99 tend to hold the arm 92 toward the bed 18 of the machine. Shafts 101 are journaled at the free ends of the arms 92 and are also journaled in arms 102 which are pivoted to the shaft 67. Dentate disks 103 are carried by the shafts 101 and are located between the opposite end portion of the arms 92. These disks are adapted to engage the upper surface of the stick which is placed upon the bed as. A gear wheel 104: is fixed to the shaft 67 and meshes with gear wheels 105 which in turn mesh with guide 107 is mounted upon the shaft 67 and one of the shafts 101 and carries a pin 108 located in the path of movement of the arm 73.
The arms 102 are provided between their ends with enlarged openings 109 through which shafts 110 pass. It is upon these shafts that the wheels 105 are mounted. The shafts 110 are adjustably mounted upon plates 110 which in turn are adjustably mounted upon the arms 92. Plates 111 are pivoted at points 112 to the arms 102 and are provided with slots 113 which re-' ceive the end portions of the shafts 110. These plates are further provided with slots 114- which receive screws 115 which are tapped into the arms 102.
From the above description, it will be seen that by turning the rod 78 one or the other of the pawls 74 or 75 may be permitted to engage one or the other of the ratchet wheels 71 01-72, then by swinging the arm 73 the shaft 67 may be turned so that the parts may be properly positioned to receive a stick between the feeders 58 and 103 or should a stick be between the feeders and the bed the stick may be moved to a desired position along the bed 4-8. After this has been done the rod 78 is turned so that both pawls 74c and 75 are moved out of engagement with the ratchet wheels 71 and 72, then as the shaft 67 is rotated at intervals by the arm 69 and pawl 70 which engages the ratchet wheel 68 the stick is moved by the feeders toward the cutter. When the stick has been properly positioned the cutter advances toward the same and the plug is formed at the end of the stick. After the plug has been formed, the saw 28 is operated in any suitable manner to cut the plug from the stick. This operation is repeated until the entire stick has been converted into plugs. These plugs are especially adapted to be used for insertion in the ends of paper rolls, and inasmuch as the plugs are open at their centers, they may be placed upon a shaft whereby the paper roll may be readily rotated.
Having described the invention what is claimed, is 2-- 1. In a machine of the character described, a bed, a transverse shaft arranged above the same, rotatable feeding elements arranged above the bed, driving connecting means between the transverse shaft and the rotatable feeding elements, manually operated means to intermittently rotate the transverse shaft in either direction, means whereby the manually operated means may be disconnected from the shaft so that the shaft may rotate without affecting a movement of the manually operating means, and automatic means for effecting a step by step rotary movement of the transverse shaft.
2. In a machine of the character described, a bed, a rotatable transverse shaft arranged above the same, rotatable feeders arranged upon opposite sides of the rotatable shaft, driving connecting means between the rotatable shaft and rotatable feeders, a pair of ratchet wheels rigidly mounted upon one end of the transverse shaft, a
manually operated pivoted lever arranged near the pair of ratchet wheels, pawls pivoted to the manually operated lever and adapted to engage and disengage the pair of ratchet wheels, means whereby one pawl may be moved into engagement with the corresponding ratchet wheel and the other pawl moved out of engagement with the corresponding ratchet wheel and both pawls moved out of engagement with the two ratchet wheels, a third ratchet wheel rigidly connected with the opposite end of the transverse shaft, a second pivoted lever, a pawl pivoted to the second pivoted lever and engaging the third ratchet wheel, and automatic means to afiect an oscillatory movement of the second pivoted lever.
3. In a machine of the character described, a bed, a transverse rotatable shaft arranged above the bed, vertically swinging supports arranged upon opposite sides of the shaft and pivoted thereto, rotatable feeding means carried by the swinging supports, driving connecting means between the transverse shaft and the feeding means, manually operated means adapted to have operative and inoperative connection with one end of the shaft to rotate the same, and automatic mechanically operated means connected with the opposite end of the shaft to rotate the same.
4:. In a machine of the character described, a bed, a transverse shaft arranged near the same, a rotatable feeding element arranged above the bed, driving connecting means between the transverse shaft and the rotatable feeding element, a manually operated swinging lever pivotally mounted upon the transverse shaft, pawl and ratchet means adapted to form operative and inoperative connecting means between the swinging lever and transverse shaft, and auto matic mechanically operated means for rotating the transverse shaft.
5. In a machine of the character described, a bed, a transverse shaft arranged near the bed, a rotatable feeding element arranged above the bed, driving connecting means between the transverse shaft and the rotatable feeding element, a swinging lever adapted when manually operated to effect the rotation of the transverse shaft, means whereby the swinging movement of the lever may alternately rotate the shaft in opposite directions in a step-by-step manner, and automatic mechanically operated means connected with the shaft to efiect a step-bystep rotatable movement thereof.
