Description
oNrrsn snares PATENT @FJBIQE.
FRANCIS C. FBIARY, OF MINNEAPOLIS, AND STERLING TEMPLE, OF ST. PAUL,
MINNESOTA.
COMPOSITION OF COPPER ALLOYS AND PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME.
No Drawing.
,vide an alloy of copper having certain desirable properties, particularly hardness.
In carrying out our invention, we alloy with the copper a metal of the alkaline earths (calcium, barium, strontiumandmagnesium) and wefind that by the use of a very small quantity of the metal of the alkaline earths, the hardness of the copper may be materially increased. As examples of such alloys, we have made alloys of copper containing less than one percent. of each of the above-named metals, (calcium, barium strontium and magnesium), and find these alloys to make sound castings which are harder than pure commercial copper, and of high electrical conductivity.
In'makmg castings of pure copper, it is well known that difiiculty is experienced with blow-holes, caused by gases, such as oxygen and nitrogen, which have been absorbed by the molten metal,-and are given Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 22, 1915. Serial No. 51,984..
off just before it solidifies. It is well known that metals of the alkaline earths have a very great afinity for and combine very rapidly with such gases at the temperature of molten copper: if, therefore, a copper alloy containing such metals be addedto the molten copper and thoroughly mixed with the same just before casting the copper, the
gases are removed and a sound casting is produced.
It is obvious that in order to secure the desired result at a minimum expense it may be desirable to manufacture or use alloys or mixtures of alloys containing more than one of the metals of the alkaline earths, each of which would produce its share of the desired eflect as above explained.
What we claim is:
1. As anew article of manufacture, a
hard alloyof copper with a metal, of the alkaline earths.-
2. As a new article of manufacture, a hard metallic alloy, containing a main body of copper, and in addition thereto containing a metal of the alkaline earths.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a hard alloy containing copper and calcium.
Signed at Minneapolis, Minn, this 20th day of September, 1915.
