PORTABLE BURGLAR-ALARM.
Application filed April 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. BROADWELL', a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved portable burglar alarm, and consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and specifically designated in the appended claims.
The object of my invention is to construct a portable burglar alarm especially designed for use by traveling men, but it may be permanently attached to the doors or windows of private residences, businesshouses, warehouses and the like, to give an alarm whenever the door or window is surreptitiously opened.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of my portable burglar alarm detached; and Fi 2 is a longitudinal section taken through a portion of a door and its frame, with my improved burglar alarm attached thereto.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 3 indicates a common alarm bell, which in the present instance has upon its interior the usual spring driven train of gearing for vibrating the clapper whenever the contact device 1 is pressed inwardly by engagement of the door or'window sash 5. The alarm bell 3 is mounted upon a bracket 6, which is adjustably secured by means of screws 7 to a base plate 8, which in turn is hinged at 9 to the outer end of an attaching plate 10. Said attaching plate 10 is provided with a series of prongs 11 which are punched therefrom so that they project at a right angle to the said attaching plate 10. In case it is desired to afliX my improved burglar alarm permanently to the door or sash, the same may be done by inserting common screws through the holes 12 into the door frame or one of the opposing sash rails 13. Hinged at14c to the outer end of said base plate 8 is a clamping plate 15, the purpose of which is to retain the said base plate 8 in alinement with said attaching plate 10 whenever the bell is placed in an operative position in the path of the door or sash, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner end of the said clamping plate 15 is secured to the attaching plate 10 by means of a suitable Specification of Letters Patent.
Paten ed J n.- 2 16- Serial No. 24,364.
and the prongs 11 are forced into the said part 13 by the act of closing the door uponv said attaching plate, or if the device is to be permanently attached, suitable screws are passed through the screw holes 12 into the part 13. The said contact device 4 will then be located in the path of the door or sash 5 as it is opened, and will be contacted by said part 5 and ring the bell 3.
When the device is not in use, the base plate 8 and the clamping plate 15, together with the bell 3, are swung around at right angles out of the path of the door or sash 5, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the door or sash may be opened without causing the bell to ring. This is permitted by first releasing the clamping plate 15 from the attaching plate 10 by turning the flat head of the screw 16 so that it will be located parallel with the said slot 17 in the said clamping plate'15, when the inner end of the said clamping plate may be quickly swung outwardly, the said slotted portion of the said clamping plate passing by the said screw 16.
The bell 3 acts as a stop, to prevent the opening of the door, and in some cases the bell may be displaced by a common buzzer or any other common alarm.
I claim:
1. The improved portable burglar alarm, comprising an attaching plate having means whereby it may be attached to a door or window sash, a base plate hinged to the outer end of said attaching plate, a bell carried by said base plate, a contact connected to said bell and adapted to be contacted by the moving door or sash whenever the latter is surreptitiously opened, a clamping plate hinged to the outer end of said base plate, and a screw for securing said clamping plate to the said attaching plate.
2. The improved portable burglar alarm,
comprising an attaching plate having means same when engaged by EL moving door 01' In testimony whereof, I have sighed my sash, sald base plate havlng a SGI'lQS of holes nametoethls spemficatwn, m-presenc'e of two 10 or slots thereln, screws for attaehmg salcl 1 subscrlbmgwltnesses. I
bell to said base plate 'a clampin plate l hinged to the outer end of said base plate HARRY BROADVVELL' and having an elongated slot, and a flat lVitnesses: headed screw for securlng sald clamplng- E. LPWALLAOE,
