To all'whom it may concern Be it known that .we, ARTHUR G. BAKER and FRANK -W. KNO'I'I, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan,
have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Distributors for Type-Setting achines, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in distributers for type-setting machines.
The objects of the invention are: Flrst, to provide an improved electrical means for actuating a type-distributing.carriage. Sec- 0nd, to provide an improved construction of carriage for carrying the dead matter to be distributed to the channels of a typesetting machine. Third, to provide an mproved construction of type-setting machine wherein the type carriage, W1 h the dead matter, can be readily returned over the mouths of the channels without undue frie tion on the type.
Further objects, and ob ects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.v
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
'The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

Considering the numerals of reference,
the mam frame 1 of the machine is provided with the usual type-channels 2 having suitable wards 25 having slanting tops for engaging the nicks 24 in the type 23. A top rail 4 is provided for the carriage 3 to travel upon, the rail being supported by suitable posts or supports -5-5. The posts 5+5 are/secured to the top of the frame by bolts'or cap-screws 6 and to the rail 4 by-cap-screws .or bolts 7. The carriage 3 1s provided with carrying wheels 8, which are supported on the axle journal pins 9-9 on the cross arms 10. A guide wheel 11 engages the rear side of the rail 4, and is supported on vertical journal pins 12 on the bracket or arm 13, extending rearwardly from the carriage 3. A pair of guide wheels 14 is supported on vertical journal pins 15 in brackets 16 on the back side of the carriage 3. These guide wheels or rollers 14 contact with the flat back sides of the toothed ratchet bar 17, which toothed rack bar 17 with the rack bar 18 is secured to the posts 5 by suitable bolts or capscrews 19.- These rack bars 17 and 18 are provided with ratchet teeth 20 and 21, respectively, those teeth 20 on the bar 17 pointing toward the left of the machine and 21 on the bar 18 pointing toward the right of the machine. These ratchet teeth cooperate with the pendulum and pawl devices for feeding and controlling the move- The type carriage 3 1s provided with vertical channels 22 in which the dead matter or type 23 is placed for distribution. - which rest in notches 62 63 in the sides of the frame, and are retained by the removable bar 64, projecting into notches 65 in the ends of the bars 25.
A longitudinal rectangular groove 27 is cut in the under side of the carriage 3,see
V-shaped. A pawl 34, having a'double' bev eled tooth 33 corresponding to and coacting with said V-shaped notches 32 and 33, is pivoted between guide arms 36 on the ri hthand side of said carriage 3. This paw 34 is urged downwardly by the spring 37 and urges the tooth 38 into yielding engagement with the notches 32 and 33 on the upper side of the bar 26.. i
The carriage moves step-by-step from the lefthand side of the machine toward the right,'the pawl 34, with its beveled tooth 33, engaging in the notch 33 toward the lefthand end of the bar 26. This carries the bar toward. the right until the finger-29 contacts with the stop 30. The carriage thencontinues its travel toward the right step-bystep over the bar until the pawl 34, with its tooth 33, engages the notch 32. When the,
carriage reaches this point, which is the end of its travel, the'type 23 in the channels of the carriage will have beenelevated up onto the bar 26, and, as thebaris now engaged by the said tooth, when the carriage is re- "turned to the left, the bar will be carried I with it until the finger 29 contacts with the oil from the bar to the level space at the left across the channel mouths.

The contact of the magnet is controlled by the pendulum 54, which is pivoted by. the rock shaft-55 in suitable journals on the top of the arm 13. The arm 56 is carried bythis rock shaft. 55 and'is provided with a contact finger 57 which swings into contact with the contact button 58 on the spring 59.
- The spring 59 is secured by the insulated binding post 60 to the arm 56, which is connected to the conductor 61, delivering current to or from the electromagnet 42; {A
lightspring 62 connects; the;upper end of thelink' 51 to the spring 59, providing a yielding connection between these parts. The'source of electric current may be a battery, as illustrated, or anyother adequate supply.
. From this description, it will be seenthat,
when the pendulum 54 swings, the contact 1125 finger .57 will swing .into contact with the contact button 58.- This closes the circuit and causes the electromagnet 42 to act. When this pendulum movement occurs, however, and the magnets act, the pawls 39 engage the teeth 21 of the rack 18, which forces the carriage one step toward the right. Immediately after these teeth have engaged the teeth 21 of the rack 18, the detent pawls 49 are forced downwardly and engage the teeth 20 of the rack 17 which are pointed in the opposite direction, and the carriage is compelled to advance but a single step and there can be no overthrow. Also, this movement is very definite and brings the type exactly to the right point to fall into the channels beneath.
It will thus be seen that the carriage of the distributer is advanced very rapidly and very definitely by a very positive movement to exactly the right point for the distribution of the type. This is of very great im- At the same time, it will be observed that, owing to the other parts of the distributer, the type can be very readily returned to the initial position without being compelled to pass over and in contact with the channel mouths. This makes the distributer very effective and insures proper distribution of the type, without danger of breakage and it insures the smooth operation of the entire device, so far as type distribution is concerned.
The method of elevating and protecting the type from engagement with the mouths of the type channels is important, and it can be made use of with various means of ad vancing and returning the carriage. Also, the particular electric means which we have shown for propelling our carriage could be made use of with any style of carriage. Our
improved means of supporting the carriage on its rail might be made use of with any carriage.
We mention these facts, because we consider each of these features important, but, however, they lend themselves particularly well to each other. It is necessary that the carriage be advanced with strong force, and
definitely in order to advance it onto the wedge-shaped bar, and the particular way in which we support the carriage prevents friction of rubbing between the parts and insures the full action of the propelling dev1ce.
Many variations, no doubt, will. suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which our invention pertains. We have shown the form in which we prefer it. We
, double desire to claim the same specifically and also broadly.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a type distributer for typesetting machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with open mouths at their upper ends; a carriage rail; a suitable carriage with vertical channels for the type to be distributed, the said carriage having suitable carrying and guide wheels for supporting the same on said rail; a wedge-shaped longitudinal bar arranged on the top of the said type channels, within a suitable longitudinal groove in the bottoms of the type channels of the said carriage, the same having V-shaped notches;
suitable stops for limiting the movement of the said Wedge-shaped bar; a pawl with a beveled tooth to engage said V-shaped notches in said bar, whereby the bar will be yieldingly engaged and retained under the carriage during the return thereof over the mouths of the'type channels and which will be moved away from over said channels by the advance of the carriage; ratchet toothed rack bars on the top of the frame of the said type setting machine with teeth pointing in opposite directions; actuating pawl means for engaging one of the said rack bars for advancing the carriage; detent pawls pivoted to said carriage to engage the opposite ratchet rack bar and limit 'theadvance of said carriage; a suitable arture; a suitable source of electric supply with. an open circuit leading to said magnet; a finger secured to the said armature;
a link connection therefrom to the detent ,pawls to throw the same into engagement with said ratchet rack bar when the carriage is advanced; a pendulum means; a spring carried by the said pendulum means suitably insulated therefrom and having a contact point thereon; a spring connection fromsaid spring to the armature; and a contact finger actuated by the said pendu lum and moving into yielding contact with the said contact point, whereby the pendulum, when swinging in one direction, will close the circuit, and will be actuated in the opposite direction by the impulse of the magnet, whereby the interval of operation of the'said apparatus is controlled, all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. Ina type distributer for typesetting machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with open mouths at their upper ends; a carriage rail; a suitable carriage with vertical channels for the type to be distributed suitably guided above said channels; a wedge-shaped longitudinal bar arranged on the top of the sea type channels, within a'suitable longitudinal "groove the bottoms of the type channels of the said carriage, the same-haw ing lbshaped notches; suitable stops for limiting the movement of the said wedge-shaped engage said 'V-shaped'notchesin said bar, whereby the barwill be yieldingly engaged and retained under the-carnage during the a bar; a pawl with a double beveled tooth to return thereof over the mouths of the type channels and which willbe moved away from over said channels by the advance of the carriage; and means for advancing said" carriage step-by-step,-all coacting substangially as described and for the purposespecied; f 1
groove in the bottoms of the type channels of the said carriage, the same having V-shaped notches; suitable stops for limiting the movement of the saidwedge-shaped bar; a pawl with a double beveled tooth to engage said V-shaped notches in saidbar, whereby thebar will be yieldingly engaged and'retained .under the carriage during the return thereof over the mouths ofthe type channels, and; which willbe moved away from over said channels by the advance of the carriage; and means for advancing said carriage step-by-step, all coactingsubstantially as described and for the purpose speci+ fied. v
4. In a type distributer' for typesetting machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with open mouths at their upper ends; a suitable carriage with vertical channels for the type to be distributed suitably guided above said channels; a Wedge-shaped longitudinal bar arranged on the top of the said type channels; suitable stops for limiting the movement of the said wedge-shaped bar means carried bysaid carriageto yieldingly engage said bar, whereby the bar will be 'yieldingly engaged and retained under the carriage dur ng the return thereof over the mouths of the typechannels and which will be moved away from over said channels by the advance of the carriage; andmeans for advancing said carriage step-by-step, all
coacting substantially as describedand for the purposespecified.

whereby the interval of'operation of the said apparatus is controlled, all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified. 6.111 a type distributer fortypesetting machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with ,open'mouths at their upper end; a suitable carriage with vertical channels for the type to be distributed guided above said 1 channels; a pair of ratchet toothed rack bars on the top of the frame of thesaid type setting machine with teeth pointing in op posite directions; actuating pawl means for engaging one of the said rack bars for advancing the carriage; alsuitable armature pivoted on the said carriage and carrying;
said actuating pawl means; an electromagnet for acting on the said armature; a suite able source of electric supply with an open circuit leading to said magnet; a finger se-' cured to the said armature; a pendulum means; a spring carried by the said pendulum insulated therefrom byasuitable bindingpost'and havinga contact point thereon; a spring connection from saidgspringto the armature; and a contact finger actuated by" the said pendulum and moving intotyielding contact with the said contact point,
whereby thependulum, when swinging in one direction, will-close the circuit, and-will be actuated in the opposite directionby the impulse of the magnet, whereby the interval of operation of the said apparatus is controlled, all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
7. In a type distributer for typesetting machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with open mouths at their upper end; a suitable'carriage with vertical channels for the type to be distributed guided above said channels; ratchet means to advance said carriage step-by step; a suitable armature carrying said actuating ratchet means; an electromagnet for acting on the said armature a suitable source of electric supply with an open circuit leading to said magnet; a finger secured to the said armature; a pendulum'means; a spring carried by the said pendulum insulated therefrom by a suitable binding post and having a contact point thereon; a spring connection from said spring to the armature; and a contact finger actuated by the said pendulum and moving into yielding contact with the said contact point, whereby the pendulum, when swinging in one direction, will close the circuit, and will be actuated in the opposite direction by the impulse of the magnet, whereby the interval of operation of the said apparatus is controlled, all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
8. In a type distributer for typesetting I machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with open mouths at their upper ends; a suitable carriage with vertical channels for the type to be distributed guided above said channels; pawl and ratchet means for advancing the sa l carriage; a pendulum supported by the said carriage; the pawls of said pawl and ratchet means connected to be actuated by the said pendulum; an electromagnet; and means actuated by said pendulum for closing the circuit to thesaid magnet for giving impulse to the said pendulum, coacting forthe purpose specified.
9. In a type distributer for typesetting machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with open mouths at their upper ends; a suitable reciprocating carriage with vertical channels for the type to be distributed guided above said channel; a bar to retain.
the type in elevated position during the return of the carriage and type over the channel mouths; and means for withdrawing the bar longitudinally to permit the distribution of the type and the operation of the said carriage, as specified.
10. In a distributer for typesetting machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with open mouths at their upper ends; a carriage rail; a suitable carriage with vertical channels for the type to be distributed, the said carriage having suitable carrying wheels to travel on the said rail and horizontal guide wheels for engaging the sides of the said rail, whereby the said carriage is supported above the said channel mouths; and means for advancing the carriage stepby-step for the distribution of the type, co-
acting as specified.
11. In a type distributer for typesetting machines, the combination of the frame of the machine with suitable type channels with open mouths at their upper ends; a suitable reciprocating carriage with suitable channels for the type to be distributed guided above said channels; opposite facing ratchet-toothed rack bars facing in opposite directions, supported on one of the said parts; an actuating pawl for engaging one of the said rack bars a detent pawl for engaging the opposed rack bar; means for actuating the said pawls, connected and timed, whereby, on the advance of the carriage, the detent pawl will be thrown into engagement to limit and define the step-by-step movement; and suitable means for giving impulse to the said ratchet means, coacting for the purpose specified.
12. In a type distributer for a type-setting machine, the combination of the frame of the machine, with suitable type channels, the partitions between said type channels being provided with wards with slanted upper ends; a suitable reciprocating carriage with suitable channels for the type to be distributed, guided above said channels; and means for raising the type out of contact with the tops of the said channels to permit the return of the carriage, coacting for the purpose specified.
