Be it known that I, VADEN S. STEPHENS, a citizen of the/United Statesfresiding at Marston, in the county of New Madrid and State of Missouri, 1 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wind mills, the object of the invention being to provide a wind mill wherein the operating shaft is mounted within a suitable housing which in turn is mounted for rotation upon the upper end of the derrick, said device being further provided with a hinged rudder which may be readily swung to an inoperative position when the mill is not in use so as to stop the operation of-the pump. a
Another ob'ect of the invention is the provision of a wind mill of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
IVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, parts thereof being shown in cross section; Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the rudder bar illustrating the mounting of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the derrick which may be of any well known construction and is. provided at its upper end with a suitable plat form 2 upon which is rotatably mounted the housing 3, said housing being mounted upon roller bearings 4: whereby the housing may be readily rotated upon the platform 2. The housing may be either circular or rectangular in form and is provided with an open upper end having a removable cover 5 mounted thereon to keep the rain and dirt from the interior of the housing.
Mounted for rotation within the housing 3 is a crank shaft 6, said crankshaft being rotatably mounted within suitable bearings 7 formed in the side wall of the housing and the end portions thereof projecting out Specification of Letters Patent.

The intermediate portion of y the shaft 6 is provided with a suitable crank which is connected to the upper end of the pitman 10 whereby upon the rotation of the shaft 6, the pump will beactuated through which. is hingedly secured to the outer wall of the housing, as shown at 14c,-and is normally retained in a horizontal position by means of a spring member 15, the intermediate portion of which is arranged beneath the bar 13 and bears against the same to normally retain the rudder in a horizontal position. The ends of the spring member 15 are passedover the pintle 14 and thence extended downwardly and secured to the outer wall of the housing, as shown at 16. From this it will be noted that when the downward pressure is applied to the rudder, the spring 15 will be placed under tension so that when the rudder is released, the tension of the spring will return the same to its normal horizontal position.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it
will be readily apparent that I have provided a wind mill of the above character which is extremely simple in construction crank shaft arranged within the housing, the
