WILLIAM c. NOLAND, "or RICHMOND, V RGINIA;
To allwhom c'tmay concern}, p
Be it known that I, I'IENRY C. RIcHARm SON, residing at Richmond, in the county of,
Henrico' and State of Virginia, have in: vented certain new and useful Improvements in Grippers for Printing-Presses, of
which the following is a specification. y
This invention, wh ch relates generally to improvements 111 grippers 'i'or printlng presses and the like, in which the cooperating parts are designed and combined that both the longitudinal and lateral adjustnients of the gripper may be simultaneously made and the said parts so constructed that the gripper may be used on narrow edged marginsin suchnianner that the gage pins will not interfere with the application of the gripper to-the pa per,1nore specifically has reference to means on that form of gripper device shown in Patent Numben927853, dated Julyl3, 1909. p a
From practical experience with the form of gripper disclosed in the patent referred to, I have found that while the same is generally effective for the purpose for which it is provided,.that under some conditions,
especiallywhen the. paper to be held on'the platen is veryv thin, that the paper holding gripper bars, by reason of being so' mounted upon and movable with the carriageattachment to the oscillatable gripper barithat their under or contacting surfaces are so projected over. the platen ina plane with the upper surface ofthe platenthat the said bars donot contact withthe'paper sheet undersufiicient pressure .tohold the sheet in the desired position on the platen during the operation ofprinting. 'Again in the constructionof the gripper bar described in the patentreferredto, the hinged extensions of the gripper or paper holding-barsare.
adapted for only .two adjustments, one in the longitudinal direction of the bars and the otherat right angles to .the'said bars.
My invention among other objects has for its purpose to provide, certain improvedfeatures in the construction of the gripper or paper holding bars whereby, to provide for causing the said bars, to contact or press down upon the sheet to be printed, to posi tively hold, even the thinnestpapersheets in proper position upon the platen during the printing operation; an improved con- .nection for joining the hinged extensions of snirrnni roe rnINrING-PBEssns.
Specificationof Letters'latent. Patgntefl Jan; is 1916 Application filedAugust 11, 1914; Serial No. 856,176. aen w d December 10, 1915. Serial no. 66,222. I
' vided to permit foradjusting the extensions to project them to positions other than the straight-aheadand the right angled posi 1 tions hereinbefore referred to. it
With other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the peculiar. construction and novel arrangement. of parts, allof which will be hereinafter fully explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims andillustrated in the accompanying drawings, inwhichr F lgure 1 s a PBISPGClJDG V16W,Ol my. 1n-
. vention and shows the same as applied for use. 2is a plan view of the printing press platen and the oscillatable gripper bar with my improvements applied, the hinged extension of the paper gripper or pressure bar-being shown adjusted diagonally with respect to the body of the said pressure bar.
Fig. 3 is a plan yiew of the paper gripper bar, constructed in accordance with 1 my invention. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken, substantially on. the line 4+4: on Fig.2. I
To render the operation and advantages of my improved. gripper device readily understood, I have illustrated, in the drawing,
so much of theplatenof a printing press and the oscillatable gripper, both of the usual construction, as is necessary to show the practical application of my'irnproved gripper bar. a 1 j l In the drawing, 1- represents the oscillatableg'ripper having the usual flangefi and trunnions2 that ournal n the bracket bear- "ings 3 to,;wliich the platen 6, is connected and which has the usual gage pins 7, as
9+9 designate'the gripper or paper holding bars and they, in my construction, have a longitudinal slot 11, to form relatively longitudinal and narrow rod like resilient members 10-10, and they are 'slidably held on a carriage 20 by the inturned fingers 20 that form a part of the said carriage, as shown. I I
The carriage 1 20 is slidably mounted on that passes through the slot 4 in the bar 1 andthrough the longitudinalslot 11 int-he "the bar 1 and is secured thereon by a bolt 22 carriage to the gripper bar 9 and the presser said bars during'the printing.
the platen to move smoothly thereover, or in other words to project fiat-wise over the paper but without a pressure suflicient to positively "prevent the thin paper sheets froinbuckling orslipplng from under the In my construction, the gripper or presser bars, which are pro ected from the carriage as in the patent referred to, have a portion 90' thereof, preferably the outer end bent down in aplane below the top face of the carriage "members to which they are 'connected, and-by reason of such construction, a portion of the said presser or gripper bars when clamped on the carriage to their open ative position, is positively held down adjacent the platen to produce a positive contacting of the said bars on the sheet, no mat ter how thin the paper, and under pressure suflicient to prevent the sheet from slipping from under the bars.
In my construction of the presser or gripper barf), the same has a quadrant shaped recess 9" in the inner edge of the outer end that forms a seat for receiving the semicircular shaped ear l4 formed on. the inner series of lock apertures 96 in the bar to thereby provide for adjusting the arm either in thelongitudinal plane of the bar, as is indicatedin Fig. 1 at right angles thereto as is shown in Fig. 3 or'projected at an angle of 45 degrees vtothe said bar 9 as is shown in Fig. 2. By reason'of providing the extension 14 and making it adjustable as stated, should the printing be such that the edge gripping of the papercannot be had and should there be a blank or'open space along the said edge, the member 14 can be swung inwardly at an angle to the bar to engage the said sheet, while the said Copies of'this patent may be obtained for V which it appertains.
bar is held away from engagement therewith.
From the foregoing description, xtaken in connection with'the accompanying drawings, it is thought the complete construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art to What I claim is V 1. A gripper for printing presses consisting of a bar, a carriage in which the said bar is longitudii'ially adjustable, means for adjustably securing said bar and the said carriage to the gripper bar of a printing press, an extension piece hinged to the free end of the bar, the said bar extending beyond the hinged joint and having a plurality' of latch recesses and a springjlatch carried by the said extension piece having a lug to. enter either of the said recesses to hold said extension piece in any of its difi'erent adjustments. K
2.v In a printing press, the combination with the platen and an oscillatab'le gripper bar that cooperates with the said platen; ofa gripper, a-carriage longitudinally slidable on said gripper bar, the said gripper comprising a flat member and projected from thecarriage to lie fiat-wise over the platen and'a single ,means foradjustably securing said gripper member and the carriage to the gripper bar, that portion of the gripper member that moves over the platen being bent in two planes, one of which is below the top face of the carriage to which the member is secured.
3. A gripper for printing presses consisting of abar, a carriage on which the said 'bar' is longitudinallyadjustable, means for adjustably securing the said bar and the said carriage to the gripper bar of a, printing press, the outer end of the said bar having a quadrant shaped recess on the'inner edge thereof, an extensionthat includes a semi-. circular shaped ear having a shouldered portion that forms a: stop forengaging the f outer edge of the gripper bar to hold the ex} tension swung up lengthwise of the said bar, the said semi-circular shaped ear of the extension being pivotally mounted in the aforesaid recessof the bar, said bar having a plurality of latch recesses and a spring latch carried by the extension and having a lugfor engaging either of the latch recesses for holding the extension piece in any of its different adjustments. 7 r p a HENRY C.
