STENCILING APPARATUS.
` Appnanoh 'ined noverribsfrfso, 1914. 'serial No. 874,894.
Be 1t known that I, HELLMUri-r LEHMf KUHL, a subject of Germany, residing at .1 j vi bt. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and btate of Minnesota, have inventedpa new and. useful Improvement in Stencil'ing" Apparatus,
of which the following is specification.
The primary object of this invention is the production of a stenciling apparatus,
which is adapted vto facilitate the selection.
of a stencil of required size, and causing it to register accurately with the material' to be printed upon, 'so that signs, store announcements and the like can be easily and accurately prepared. y e e A further object is the production of simple fand inexpensive construction. Thesey and other objects will be apparent from the following description, in which the accompanying drawing `forms part thereof. 'y y e Figure l is aplan of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of a detail, and Fig'.V '3 is a plan of 'the head piece on an enlarged scale, part of the structurebeing broken away.
In the drawing, A 'indicates a portable base of any suitable dimensions and material, having two oppositely disposed vertical supports B of similar construction at its hupper end and disposed c at each side. a bearing bracket in the form of a plate secured to the side edges of the base by screws C or other suitable means. A portion of this plate projecting above the surface of the base is formed with a vertical slot D and a lateral channel E, extending forwardly and forming an opening in extension of said slot for receiving a gudgeon such as F into the slot. Disposed horizontally between the supports B and across the upper end of the surface of the base is a head piece Gr in the form of a block made of wood or other suitable material having polygonal sides H of any suitable number, the drawing illustrating three, and a cross section of the block being substantially a triangle with thel apexes cut olf to produce straight shoulders Q. The ends of the block are provided with gudgeons F in the form of stud bolts threaded on their outer ends and projecting from the ends of the head block on its axis. These gudgeons are adapted to be passed into the slots D of the sup ports B through the channels E, where t e Specicationf etters Patent." Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
Each of these supports consists ofkv blockisrotatably supported and free tobe j lifted, while `remaining in the supports, so that the block can be turned and any one ofy itssides made to rest` upon the surface,`
offthebase. Along-each longitudinal edge of the block, a scale such as J is graduated, the graduations of'all of the scales being diiferent for the purpose` of designating the stencil such as K, which should be used with the head piece, there being a stencil or set. of stencils provided for coperation with each scale. The stencils of each seti or group are marked for identification so that they can be selected for use with a corresponding scale on the head piece. In F ig.` l the scale which is in position for use is marked byfthe numeral 3 at` a point substantially midway between the ends of the block and the stencil has a, similar` identification markL l near .fits right hand end. This mode t of marking the scales and stencils is carried out on all of the scales and stencils, different identification marksbeing employed.z
Injuse the material such as a sheet of j paper L is placed `upon the base in desired position, andthe head piecey made to rest upon4 the material, the `head piece serving as a weight to hold the material in position. Thumb nuts M on the threaded ends of the gudgeons Yare then screwedfdown against .the supports B, thus clamping the head piece firmly upon its supports, while the material L is held in position on the surface of the base. The stencil can then be adjusted along the longitudinal straight shoulders Q, of the head piece, and the material stenciled. The shoulders Q of the head piece form guiding straight edges along which the stencil can readily be selectively positioned. The scales on the head piece are graduated from a center line N to enable the material being centered on the base. The surface of the base is also provided with scales O, the graduations being numbered or marked from a point P, indicating a line bi-secting the base vertically to assist in enabling the user positioning the material such as L centrally upon the base. The base is also graduated with line spaces P, which are numbered for convenience in selecting a stencil having letters of desired height or size for use. The operation of the apparatus is extremely simple, as well as its construction, the material being easily adjusted upon the surface of the base, where it is held by the head piece in position,f'so1that a ystencil for preparing a sign of any character.
The scales J are graduated along` the opposite edges of each side of the head piece,
their order being reversed so that 'by'changf' ing the head piece end for end two scalesr wedges ofsone vof its sides for assistingvin" are provided -on each side, making -jdouble the lnumber of different scales able upon the head piece.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of loperation of myy invention, together with the apparatus whichV I nowk consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is yonly illustrative, and that the in: vention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above n setv forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is n l. In a stenciling apparatus, the co1nbi nation with a base for supporting material to be stenciled, of a head piece formed with a plurality of substantially fiat sides having Vscales graduated thereon for vassisting in positioning the material to be stenciled lat verally upon the surface of said base, and
supports on said base, in which said head piece is rotatable and movable up and down, whereby said head piece is adapted to be rigidly secured with either of its sides rest- -fing down upon and holding said material secured Hat upon the base, said head having a series of straight edges against any one of which a stencil may be arranged for Vpo- Copies of this patent may be obtained for in all 'avail-k p sitioningfthe "same longitudinally of said of desired size can be selected and employed f f blse...v i 2. In a stenciling apparatus, the combi- -nation withV -a.-- base Y for -supporting material to be stenciled, of a head piece formed with a plurality. of substantially Hat sides having graduated scales along the longitudinal said base in which said head piece is changeably supported end forend and freely movable up and down, whereby said head piece 'can be positioned with any of its scales on a side facing downwardly along the surface of said base and with its weight resting and holding the material positioned upon said base. g y
In a stenciling apparatus, the combination with a base for supporting materialy to be stenciled, of head .piece formed with a plurality `of substantially flat sides having scales graduated along the longitudinal vedges of'v each ofits sides for assisting in positioning the `material to be stenciled Vlaterally upon the surface of said base, and supports on said base in which said head l piece is rotatable and changeably ysupported end'for end, whereby saidhead piece can be reversed androtated withr any of its scales facing downwardly along the surface of said base, for` the purposes specified. Y In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
