To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB on S. FREUND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beaver, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Making Tiles, of which the following is a I as full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view through a plurality of tiles and forms showing one method of making the tiles; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one type of form for carrying out my invention.
This invention relates to a method of making tiles in forms which are open at the top and bottom or at two sides thereof, and in which the tiles are laid one upon another after they have .been formed to allow them to set.
Another object of my invention is to form apart between adjacent tiles by means 'on both surfaces thereof.
The precise nature ofmy invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised, however, that changes may be niade without departing from the spirit and sco e of my invention, as defined in the appen ed claims.
In the drawings, the numeral 2 designates a suitable bottom board or floor, 3 the molds, each of which, with the exception of the bottom. mold, is provided with centering members 4, which are secured to the side members of the molds, and are provided with lugs 4 Extending through the lugs 4 on each end of each mold is a rod 4" for securing the several parts of the. mold to each other. These centering members 4 are tapered as indicated at 5 in order to center the molds one upon the other, as hereinafter described.

The method is carried out as follows: The board or floor 2 is first coated with a powdered material 7 such as soapstone, soapstone and chalk, or any pulverized material in which the several particles will not adhere to each other when they are moistened, but
'a second form is placed on top of the first form. The second form is then filled in a manner similar to which the first form was filled, the operation being repeated until a predetermined number of tiles has vbeen formed one above the other. The tiles are then permitted to set, and after they have set the forms and tiles are removed, the material 7 comingling with the adjacent tiles, and forming a coating on the outer surfaces thereof. Y
Instead of using the powdered material alone, I can use a mixture of oil and powdered material which is painted or sprayed on the tiles to form the part.-
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of a methodby which I can make a plurality of tiles or slabs adjacent to each other with forms which are open at both sides or ends, by placing a suitable parting material between the molds and tiles which form the top of one tile and the bottom of the other t1le, and which parting material simultaneously forms a facing for the tiles.
, I claim:
1. The method of forming a plurality of tiles or slabs one above the other, which consists in placing a mold open at the top and bottom on a suitable forming surface, then filling the mold with a cement mixture, then striking ofi the surplus mixture, then coating the top of the formed tile with a parting substance which will be absorbed b the cement mixture but in which the part1- cles will not adhere to each other, then lacing a second mold 0 on at the top and bottom on the first mo d, then filling the second mold with cement, then striking ofi the surplus material, and repeating the operation until a predetermined number of tiles have been formed; substantially as described.
2.
