v EDWARD WA TE ra ios, on Tomaso,'oivpAmdIcAn nA. v
ToaZZw/mmz'tmag concern: I
,Be it. known that 'I, EDWARD VVAL'rnR P non, a citizen of the United States of America, residing'at the city of Toronto, in
the countyof York and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Resilient Tires; and I hereby declare that the following is a ful .scription of the same.
. This invention relates to resilienttire comprising two, concentric sets, of arched segments, thesegments of thelnner set belng arranged around thefelly or rim of the wheel, andthose ofthe outer set having independent movement in a radial direction and normally separated-from the inner set bv compression springs, the transverse or lateral movement of the segments being 0on trolled by auxiliary springs connected with I inner set; Fig. 5, is a fragmentary view of the locking rings; and Fig. 6, is a detail View of the clamping bolt and detachable clamping lug. 1 I
Like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings. I Each of the inner segments a consists essentially of an arched plate a, a base a, and internal spring seats I), b. 1
The base a is centrally located with respect to the edges of the arc of the segment a, and the outer sides of the base a converge toward the rim 0, for the purpose hereinafter described. Extending radially from the interior of the segment a, is a stud or post (i, and at each side of the stud or post cl, parallel with the edge of thesegment a, are thespring seats 6, 6, provided with studs or posts 6, e. The arched plate a, thebase a, the spring seats I), b, and the posts (1 e and e are preferably cast in one piece. Each of the outer segments 7 consists of an arched plate f, a st'udorpost f' extending radially from the interior of the segment, and spring seats 9, 9, located on Application filed April 10, 1915'. opposite sides of the stud or post if, and
provided with studs or posts it, h. o
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the studs or posts d and f of each pair of -opp0sed segments are radially alin'ed, Withft separation betweenuthem of thesamefldepth as the separation jbe tween the edges of the. arched plates a and fjof the opposed segments,so that the outer segment can. move in the direction of the circhngeach pair of radially opposed posts (Z and 7', and engaging the corresponding inner and outer segments, is a compression spring 70, to resist the inward movement of the outer segment when under pressure, and
during the compression of the springs 7a and auxiliary springs Z. qE'nto restore the outersegment to-its normal:
position whenrelievedrof the pressure.
The posts of each, row c, eaare alined with 'thoseof each'row "h, h respectively,
the posts of thev inner segment a being spacedfrom those of the outersegment s by a separation m corresponding'to the separations i and 7'. On each pair ofopposed 7 respectlvely, are auxil ary spr1ngsZ,the purpose posts of the rows 5 and it 'ande, h
ofwhich is to assistthe compression spring 7c in. resisting the inward movement of the outer segment-andirestoring theouter seg ment to its normal pos1t1on,and also to control the lateral or transverse movement of the outer segment with respect to the inner segment, the bending movement of the auxiliary springs being limited by the overhanging parts of the arched plates (1 and f. As shown in Fig. 3, the sides of the arched i plate 7, are formed with webs o to prevent the flattening out of the arched plate under the influence of the load; the plate f, spring seats g, 9, posts 7 and h, h andqwebs 0, being preferably made of a single casting.
As shownin Fig. 1, the arcs of the segments a and f are described from the same center, so that when the parts are assembled,
they will form a substantially annular metal tube to be incased by the rubber or leather covering 79, the tread 79 of which overlies the arched segments 7 and the sides 7?" of which contact the outer surfaces of the segments a and the sides of the base a.
Interposed between the bases of the segments aand the rim care the locking rings r and u havingflangess and 25 respectively, which engage the sides 77" of the covering d press "them against the sides of the
