LPQLISHING-MACHINE.
Application filed tra 7, 1914. Serial no. assess.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern: Be it known thatl, WILLIAM H. GAR- itoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of V fashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing-Machines, of which the following is a specifica 'tion. 1 i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in polishing machines, and has forits object the provision of a portable polisher which is adapted to be used on metallic and other signs. v
, Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel method of supporting the polishing wheel, in connection with the operating means therefor.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a device which may be easily and quickly adjusted tothe person of the user-and conveniently heldin operative position." \I v With the above and other objects in view, I will now proceed to describe my invention in the following specification and ac companying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a side View of my improved polishing device, with a part "of the handle broken away, and Fig. 2 is a face view of my improved polisher showing thebufling Wheel and guide Wheel in section.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 1 indicates the handle portion of' my improved polishingdevice having .formed at the lower end thereof the gapping member 2. The handle "portion 1 1s 4 preferably tapered, as clearly illustrated in the drawings, and isprovided near its upper extremity with the transverse apertures 3, through which the arms of the U-shaped member i'are adapted to extend. Each of the arms of' the U-shaped member A are'provided with the shoulders 5, which are adapted to abut the body portion immediately; adjacent the aperture 3 when the 'device is in place.
in osition.
" tended, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2,-and
provided with the collar ,9. A suitable burr Specincation of Letters Patent.
1 The ends'of the U-.shaped mem.---. 7 her are preferably provided with suitable external screw threads which are adapted to .coact with the nutj6 in. holding thedevice uitably secured adjace n t the upper Lend of the handle portion I preferably provide the electric motor .71, havlng the axle 8 ex Patented Jan. ii. rare.
able material is secured to the axle and adapted ijO abut the collar. This buffing wheel lO-is secured intermediate the collar and a suitable nut 11, which is threaded on the end of the extension. An electric current is furnished through any suitable source of supply and is connected through the medium of the switch 12 and the wires 13 with the motor. This switch 12 is secured to the handle portion 1 in any suitable manner and within easy reach of-the oper-c ator. Thus, it will be seen that the operation of the motor may be controlled with out causing undue inconvenience.
A suitable guide wheel 16 lS'PI'OVldQd and located on the shaft 8, between the collar 9 and the motor 7. This guard wheel is to prevent the fabric portion of'the .bufi' ing wheel 10 from breaking down while being passed over the surface of the object to be polished and to assist the operator. in supporting the device While in operation. This guard wheel 16 is to operate pivotally on theshaft 8 and independent of the buding wheel 10.
rounds the 'bight .portionof the U-shaped member 4. This ring is adapted. to form a"- A suitable ring 13 is provided and surimproved bufiing device, the same is carried to the point whereit is desired to'be used.-
" Upon connecting the switch with any suitable spark supply it will be apparent at the will of the operator the current :m'ay be thrownfon, which will cause the motorto be. set in motion, thereby drivingthe axle 8,.
and revolving the polishing wheel 10. Upon the user-and. grasping the grippin member placing the strap 14 over the shgilders of 2, it will be apparent that the bu ng wheel ay be directed to adjust the'object which be'polished and through the action of the motorthedesired result may be attained in an easy andquic'k manner, without the necessity pos1t1on.
0E removingithe object from its While iii the foregoing I have shown and "described thepreferred embodiment 'ofthe invent1on,-I wish it to be understood that -I may change the specific combination and- I l departing'from t rts without in any way e spirit and scope$ of 'my invention as defined in the appended claim. What is claimed,is:- i C A polishing machine of the character described, a support having its sides tapered from the top to the lower portion thereof;
arrangement of %a and provided with a gr1pping member at the lower end, a motor fixed to the wider end of the support, a bufling wheel conneot-.
ed on the motor shaft and arranged to be driven thereby, an independently rotatable guard wheel mounted on the motor shaft intermediate the -motor and the bufiing Wheel, and a U-shaped member extending 5 through the support between the motor and the lower gripping member, to form a hand WILLIAM H. GARLOCK. Witnesses:
