WATER CLOSET.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 10, 1913.

INVENTDF-Q WiTNEEJE|2J M w/wmg: g; k MGMQW I by ATTU R N E265 JOHN J. BOYNE, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
WATER-CLOSET.
Application filed March 10, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BoYNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets, of which the following is a specification. .7
This invention relates to a water closet of that type in which the contents of the bowl vide such water closets with an auxiliaryv siphon or overflow which during the normal condition of the closet Wlll be inactive but which in the event of the main siphon becoming clogged will become active and conduct the water from the bowl to the out let of the closet and thus prevent overflowing the same.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1. is a vertical longitudinal sectionof a Water closet embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Although my invention is applicable to water closets which may be variously constructed so far as the details are concerned that shown in the drawings comprises a bowl 1 having an internal flushing rim 2 and a water supply pipe 3 connected with the rear part of this rim. Underneath the bowl is arranged the outlet 4 for the closet which may be connected with the drain or soil pipe in any suitable and well known manner. During the normal operation of the closet the contents of the bowl are removed therefrom through a main siphon arranged on the rear part of the closet and having an ascending passage 5 which extends upwardly from the bottom or lower part of the bowl and a descending passage 6 extending downwardly from the upper end of the ascending passage 5 to the outlet 4.
Upon admitting water into the bowl from the supply pipe and flushing rim so as to cause the water in the bowl and ascending Specification of Letters Patent;

passage 5 to rise until it escapes into the descending passage 6 a siphonic action is produced in a well known manner which causes the contents of the bowl to be drawn from the bowl upwardly through the ascending passage 5 and discharged downwardly through the descending passage 6 and out of the outlet in the waste pipe. After each flushing operation the water in the bowl sealsthe lower end of the ascending passage 5 so as to prevent the escape of any sewer gas from the drain pipe through the main siphon into the building, the level of the water at this time not rising above the upper ends of the ascending and descending passages of the main siphon.
It sometimes happens that the main siphon becomes clogged by reason of children dropping tooth or hair brushes, drinking glasses or other hardsubstances in the bowl so that they are drawn into the ascending passage of the main siphon and choke the same. lVhen this occurs the subsequent addition of water upon opening the flushing valve will eventuallyfill the bowl completely with water and often overflow from the latter on to the floor causing damage and inconvenience. To avoid this an auxiliary siphon or overflow is provided which is preferably arranged on the front side or part of the closet and consisting of an ascending passage 7 extending upwardly from the bottom of the bowl and a descending passage 8 extending downwardly from the upper end of the ascending passage 7 to the'outlet 4. The upper ends of the ascending and descending passages of the auxiliary siphon or overflow are arranged higher than the upper ends of the ascending and descending passages of the main siphon so that there is no flow through the auxiliary siphon or to flow over the turn or highest part of the main siphon. But if the main siphon is obstructed either completely or to such an eX- tent that the water is not carried away from the bowl by the main siphon as fast as it is supplied by the flush pipe then the water will rise in the bowl and in the ascending passage of the auxiliary siphon or overflow until it reaches the highest part of the same after which any additional water discharged into the bowl by the flush pipe will flow downwardly through the descending passage of the auxiliary siphon or overflow and escape through the outlet 4 to the drain or overflow while the water is free to correct the defect.
sewer. Inasmuch as the ascending passage of the auxiliary siphon or overflow is filled with water from the bowl this siphon is water sealed and sewer gas is prevented from passing through the same from the drain or waste pipe into the building. It will thus be noted that so long as the main siphon is in an operative condition to carry away the contents of the bowl when the flushing water is supplied thereto, the auxing of the room in which the closet is installed. When this abnormal rising of the water in the bowl is observed this serves as a signal that something is wrong with the main siphon so that a plumber can be called The closet is not intended to be used when only the auxiliary siphon or overflow is available since the primary function of the latter is that of a safety device to prevent overflowing of the closet and also as an indicator to call attention to a clogged condition of the main siphon. I
By arranging the auxiliary siphon on the front side of the bowl the closet can be manufactured at low cost without any unusual diificulty and without detracting from the appearance of the same. The cross sectional area of the auxiliary siphon is also smaller than that of the main siphon so that the auxiliary siphon does not project forwardly from the bowl to such an extent as would cause interference therewith and so that the slow escape of the water through the same in the event of the main siphon becoming clogged will notify the user that the latter requires attention.
My improved water closet is exceedingly simple in construction, the same can be produced at a cost no greater than those now ,in common use, and the same does not require a departure from the usual method of installation.
v I claim as my invention:
1. A water closet comprising a bowl, an outlet below said bowl, a main siphon having an ascending passage extending up- -wardl v from the bottom of said bowl and a descending passage extending downwardly from the upper end of said ascending passage to said outlet, and an auxiliary siphon or overflow having an ascending passage tending upwardly from the bottom of the sage to said outlet, and an auxiliary siphon or overflow having an ascending passage extending upwardly from the bottom of the bowl and a descending passage extending downwardly from the upper end of said last mentioned ascending passage to said outlet, the upper ends of the passages of the auxiliary siphon being arranged higher than the upper ends of the passages of the main siphon and saidmain siphon being arranged on the rear part of the closet and said auxiliary siphon on the front part of the closet andthe cross sectional area of said auxiliary siphon being less than that of said main siphon.
