ROBERT BOSCH, OF STUTTGART, GERMANY, .ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM OF ROBERT BOSCH,
0F STUTTGART, GERMANY.
\WASHSTAND WITH FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
Application led July 19, 1911. Serial N0. 639,392. l l
To all vwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BOSCH, engineer, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 11-13 Hoppenlaustrasse, Stuttgart, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashstands with Fire-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a washstand for' washing with inflammable liquids, in com bination with means for automatically eX- tinguishing accidental fire within the washstand. Devices for this purpose have been heretofore proposed in which the flames are extinguished by a tire extinguishing material, such as sand or ashes, the material being automatically released as a result of the'aetionof the flames.-
l In accordance with (this invention, the flames are' smothered by providing a movable member to automatically close a normally 'open v.compartment containing the wash basin in a substantially air tight manner as soon as the inflammable washing liquid catches fire. For this purpose,. an easily ignitible string placed above the wash stand, as in lmy'co-pending application, Serial No. 584,219, filed 'September '28, 1910, restrains the operating mechanism until thel flames burn the, string,: fwhereupon the operating mechanismA z iutomaticallyl releases' the movable member,
In the-accompanying drawings, showing an embodiment of the invention, parts being' Y broken away for the .sake of clearness,`F1gure 1 isa view oft-he washstand .in side eleva# tion, and Fig.`2 is a view thereof. lin front elevation.,
The wash mable washing liquid, such as benzin, naphtha. or the like, rests upon a perforated plate B positioned within a. compartment Y.
This compartment is closed at the top, back` and sides by sheet metal walls and at-the bottom by a funnel Dwhich conducts any basin A containing theinflam-.
liquid splashing or overflowing from the wash basin to the safety benzin can E of a well known type. The compartment is normally open at the front whereby the Workman has access to the wash basin. The shelf X provides a convenient place for holding 'the material which is to be Washed. A normally open door S slidingly mounted` on guides S has secured thereto supporting wires or chains S2 which pass over pulleys K and are attached to Weights G. The weights are held in their raised positions by an ignitible string Z which passes through the compartment Y. Upon ignition of the inflammable liquid, the string'Z burns, thus allowing the weights to fall by gravity, whereby the door S. will be raised to close the opening Y. The compartment will thus be effectively sealed and the flames therein will be smothered.
Having thus described my invention, what I Vclaim is: I
In a washstand, in combinatiom a wash vving compartment having lan opening at the front thereof for affording access to the compartment, guides positioned on opposite sides of the opening, a door slidingly engaging the guides and adapted to slide upwardly thereon to close the opening to Specification ofLettersPatent. Y y PatentedJan. 4, 1916.
thereby render the .compartment substantially air-tight, pulleys secured tothe washystand above the openingasupporting members secured to the door and passing over the pulleys, *weights secured to the supporting member and tending L'to fall to raise the door to its closed position, and easily 'ignitible means extending through the compartment and normally supporting the weights so as to restrain them from closing the door until the ignitible means is burned by flames within the compartment.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature, in presence of two \vitnesses.-
ROBERT BOSCH.
