MARKING-GAGE.
Application filed April 26, 19-15.
To all to 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn: J. BREWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the county of Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Marking- Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gages and more particularly to marking gages.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient tool of this character by which eXact markings may be obtained for cutting square or miter-ed work so that an' exact fit may be obtained.
In carpentry it is frequently desirable to cut top trim strips for doorways, window frames and the like so as to fit the miter at the upper end of the side trimmed strip. It is also desirable to cut base-boards for wainscoting trim to exactly fit the door or window frame trimming strips and it is the obicct of the invention therefore, to pro-- vide a tool by which the base-board top trimming strips or other parts may be marked for a cutto exactly fit the parts already secured in position. To do this, it is necessary to provide means for engaging and fitting alongside of the stationary part and over the part to be fitted thereto. The instrument to be hereinafter described performs these functions in an eflicient and capable manner.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompany ing drawings which form a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view.
In the specific embodiment of the in vention as illustrated herein, the device comprises a pair of members 1 and 2 the first one of which is provided with an off-set having projecting therefrom laterally spaced guiding pins or studs 3 and a threaded stud t arranged in between the studs 3 and parallel therewith. The member 2 is apertured to receive all of the studs Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. as, 1915..
Serial No. 24,009.
and is provided with an under cut recess 5 in its outer face arranged to receive the flange 6 on the adjusting nut 7 which is threaded upon the stud i to regulate the distance between the members 1 and 2 which are maintained in parallelism by the guiding studs 3 as will be readily understood.
The member 2 is provided with an aperture 8 through which is placed a bolt 9 carried by a molding piece 10 which may be of any suitable shape to conform to the molding on the edge of the piece to be cut so that the outer face of the molding may be readily marked as will be hereinafter described whereby a cut may be obtained which will fit the stationary part against which the molding is to abut.
In use the member 1 is placed in the rear of the part to be out while the member 2 extends across the front thereof. The memher 1 is held with its side edge against the stationary part while the marking member 2 extends over the face of the part to be cut and a marking device is drawn along the side of said marking member which corresponds to the side of the member 1 in e11- gagement with the stationary part, thus producing a line where the cut is to be made to insure a tight fit between the stationary cart and the part to be fitted thereto, irrespective of whether the stationary part is square with the edges of the part to be fitted thereto or not.
The foregoing applies whether the out is a miter cut or a square cut and if the saw follows the mark made the joint will be tight throughout. It is of course understood that when this marking device is used the piece to be out has its end overlapping the stationary part against which the cut end will abut.
The parts 1 and 2 may be, of course, slid apart or drawn together to accommodate any ordinary thickness of lumber as will be readily understood and the part 10 may be removed when there is no molding to out.
What is claimed is A marking gage comprising a member having an off-set portion, laterally projecting spaced guide pins carried by the ofl"- In testimony whereof I afiix my signaset portion, a second member adjustably ture in presence of two witnesses. mounted upon said guide pins, means for adjusting the members toward and away JOSEPH from each other, and a removable molding Witnesses:
