Be it known that 1, CHARLES- M. Win- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Train Toilet Devices; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relatesto train toilet dethe purpose of providing means to be operated by one of the train hands for flushing the toilet bowl after the train has passed through a city, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to prevent the flushing of toilet bowls in cars during the time they cities or thickly populated districts.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the toilet bowl which may be of the usual or any suitable construction havingan extension 2 connected by a suitable base 3 to the floor 4 of the car. and at the lower end of the discharge pipe 6 is the ordinary dump pan Z, said dump pan being pivoted at 8 and provided with a an extending arm-9. .The arm 9 is pivotally connected at 10 to a link 11, said link being pivoted at 12 to a piston rod 13. The piston 13 extends through the floor and into a cylinder 14. The cylinder 14 may be located at the side of the bowl 1 or at any suitable point, and comprises a stuffing box 15 through which the piston rod 13 extends,

piston head 16, while the opposite endbears against a detachable cap 19 having a vent hole 20 therein. On the piston rod 13 is a stop 21 whichlimits the downward movement of the head 16 beyond the opening 22 in the cylinder and connected in the opening 22 is aicompressed air pipe 23 which leads through a partition 24 to a separate compartment in the car. Connected to the pipe 23 is an elbow 25 to which a vertical pipe 26 is connected, said pipe leading up through an elbow 27v to a cook or valve 28 havingan operating handle 29. From said valve or cock 28 a pipe 30 leads to thecompressed air tank or to the air brake system of the train. A steam pipe 31 from any suitable source of supply leads through the floor 4: and encircles the discharge pipe 6, as shown at 32 to prevent freezing of the discharge pipe in cold climates. The coils 32 are connected to the pipe 6 by suitable keepers 33. An overflow aperture 34 is provided near-*the upper end of the discharge pipe 6.

The operation of the invention may be briefly described as follows: Whenever desired the brakeman may operate the valve or cook 28 to admit compressed air to the cylinder 14 for raising the piston head 16 against the tension of the spring 18 to operate the dump pan 7, and when the handle 29 is turned to close the valve, the spring 18 will gradually return the dump pan to its original position. In this way the flushing of the bowl willnot occur while the train is It will be obvious that the toilet bowl may be provided with the usual flushing apparatuswhich can be rendered inoperative by the brakeman when nearing a city.

Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.

What is claimed is 1. An apparatus for dumping toilet bowls on railway trains having a toilet bowl, an inclined waste pipe connected to said bowl, a dump pan pivoted to the lower part ofsaid waste pipe and extending across the opening thereof, a vertical cylinder secured by the side of said toilet bowl and in vertical alinement with the dump pan, said .bowls on railway trains,

cylinder having an inlet aperture, a piston head slidably mounted. on said cylinder above said inlet aperture, a piston rod secured to said piston head and extending downwardly, a downwardly inclined arm secured to said dump pan, and a link pivoted to the free end of said'arm and to the free end of said piston rod whereby said dump can be operated when said piston a piston head slidably mounted in said cyl- 20 inder above said inlet aperture, a piston rod 'secured to said piston head and extending downwardly, a downwardly inclined arin secured to said dump pan, a link pivoted to the free end of said arm and to the free end of said piston rod whereby said dump can be operated when said piston head is forced upward, and an enlargement on the upper end of said piston rod, said enlargement being intermediate the piston head and the 3C bottom of the cylinder whereby said piston head is kept above said inlet aperture.
