IMPROVEMENT IN TANNERS STEEPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,626, (lated July 4, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEWIS K. PARSONS, CHARLES E. GETCHELL, and SAMUEL WV. FAIR- FIELD, all of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Tanners Steeper, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists in so constructing the steeper that the contents may be discharged in a much more expeditious and economical inanner than by the present mode of operation.
Figure l is a side sectional view, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the outside bottom of the improved steeper'.
The ordinary mode of discharging the contents of the steeper after the liquor is drawn oiI' is, after waiting to have it drain suiciently, to shovel the tan over the sides of the steeper' to Vthe ground, from whence it is again shoveled into a cart to be removed to the place desired.
Onrmethod is to place the steeper in a suflieiently elevated position to allow the cart or other vehicle to pass directly beneath it. An opening is made in the bottom of the steeper sufticiently large to allow the tan to drop directly into the cart and taken to the place desired.
The opening in the bottom F ofthe steeper S, after the contents are removed, is covered by the valve or trap-door I), to the bottom of which is attached the screw B, so arranged as to swivel or turn in the fastening. The threads of the screw B lit corresponding threads in the cent-er of th e yoke A. B y turning the yoke A upon the screw B when the valve I is closed the ends of the yoke pass under the lugs E 1*],and by turning the screw the valve is pressed against the bottom of the steeper, thus preventing' all leakage.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- The combination ofthe steeper S, the valve P, the screw B, and the yoke A, or its equivalent, constructed and arranged substantially a-s described.
