Be it known that I, J OHANN EDUARD MAR- WEDEL, a subject of the King of Saxony and of the German Emperor, residing at 34: Barthelstrasse, Cologne-Ehrenfeld, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a new and useful Mixing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is the construction of an apparatus for mixing liquids with each other which contain substances able toreact chemically with each other. Hitherto one has laid the chief attention in such devices to obtain an intimate mixture of the whole contents of the vessel. One has not observed that the chemical action of the liquids is injured by the fact that one brings fresh portions of the liquids, which have not acted on each other or are in the beginning of the chemical action, into contact with other portions already intimately mixed or transformed.
The object of the present invention is to construct a mixing apparatus avoiding the said disadvantages. The construction of the new apparatus allows that the portions of the liquids being at different stages of the mixing or transformation process are kept separate from each other in one and the .same vessel. This can be obtained by dividing the mixing apparatus into an optional number of compartments each of which is in connection with the next, but contains a different mixing stage of the liquids.
The apparatus can be employed for several purposes, for instance for the purification of hydrocarbons as benzol, petroleum, and benzin by treating them with sulfuric acid, for mixing tar oils with alkalis, for sulfurizing and nitrating organic compounds, treating vegetable oils by means of oxidizing agents, and so on.
In the accompanying drawing a vertical section of the new mixing apparatus is illustrated.
The new apparatus consists of a vertical cylindrical mixing tank J. This tank J is surrounded by a jacket 6, into which by means of the pipe is cold water or steam may be introduced in order to effect a cooling or heating as may be desirable. low space, into which passes a pipe 9 through which cold water or steam introduced at it may be led into the pipe to effect cooling or heating of the shaft and tank J, as may be desirable. The waste water or steam is led out from the apparatus at 9 To the shaft f a number of propeller-like blades 1 to 5 are secured at equal distances apart. The said blades 1 to 5 are so arranged that they throw the material to be mixed alternately to the right or left, in
order to obtain an intimate mixture of the liquids. On the shaft also flat disks a and 0 are attached rotatably to the shaft coaxially with the horizontal walls 41 and w of the tank J and between each pair of blades, the diameter of the said disks is only a little smaller than the inner diameter of the tank J. In addition, the apparatus is divided into compartments by means of a plurality of, for example two, flat partitions Z2 and (Z, which fit the wall of the tank tightly and are not secured on to the shaft f. The partitions 6 and (Z are preferably supported loosely on bosses. The partitions b and cl have in their centers apertures 11 and 12 which are of such a size that a narrow space is left adjacent the shaft for the passage of the liquids which is being mixed. In the bottom of the tank are two openings m and n for the admission of liquids and a discharge pipe 9. The liquids issue above at Z.
The apparatus operates as follows: The liquids (e. g. two: X and Y) enter at a suitable pressure and in the proper proportion at m and a into the first compartment of the apparatus J, are caught by the blades 1, whirled through each other and driven between the edge of the disk (4 and the tank J into the second compartment. Here they are subjected to the blades 2 which mix the liquids in the opposite direction. In consequence of the pressure of the columns of the liquids X and Y the liquids move upward and flow through the inner aperture of the partition 6 fitting the wall of the tank J. The same operation is then repeated in the third and fourth compartments and continued in the subsequent compartments until the liquids leave the apparatus at Z or the apparatus is completely discharged at P.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus for mixing liquids, the combination of a cylindrical mixing tank having pair of inlet openings at its lower part and an outlet opening at its upper part; a vertical hollow rotatable shaft disposed axially of the tank and extending through the top thereof; means for rotating the shaft; a series of alternately oppositely disposed propellers mounted on said shaft and having hollow blades communicating with the space in the shaft; a pipe entering the top of the shaft and extending to near the bottom thereof; a series of partitions disposed horizontally across the tank in the space between succeeding pairs of propellers, and having a central opening of a diam eter larger than that of the shaft; horizontal disks mounted on the shaft between each of said pairs of propellers and having an outside diameter less than the internal diameter of the tank; and feed pipes communicating with said openings.

vertical hollow rotatable shaft disposed axially of said tank and extending through the top thereof; means on the outside of the tank for rotating the shaft; a series of alternately' oppositely disposed propeller Wheels mounted along said shaft and having hollow blades communicating with the space within the shaft; a pipe entering the top of the 1101- low shaft, spaced from the sides thereof and pairs of propellers and having an outside diameter less than the internal diameter of the tank; and feed pipes communicating with said inlet openings and extending to a level above'the outlet opening.
