IMPROVEMENT IN CAR'COUPLINGS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that We, Gnonen E. DARLING and MATHEW HEUS, of lllarytown, in the county of Fond du Lao and in the State ot' \Viseonsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar- ()ouplings, of which the following is a specification:

The object oi' the present invention is to provide the draw-bars oi' the Couplings with suoli devices that the oars nia-y be either automatically coupled or coupled from the pl att'orms or tops oi" the oars, and its nature consists in the novel oonstruetion and combination oi' apivotedlatohpin with a slotted lever, which serves both the purpose of raising the latelrpin and holdingl it np properly so that the ears neednot be coupled when making up trains, due., as the Whole is hereinafter fully desoribed and shown.

In the drawing, Figure 1 represents the drawba-rs and buffers of the (mnpling provided with our eonljding attaohment, said ligure being a side longitudinal elevation, Fig. 2, a side elevation ot' one of the drmv-bars, with the coupling at taehed, raised up and supported by the slotted lever; Fig. 3, a top view ot' the draw-bar and Coupling attaohment; Fig. 4, a lmrspeetive view of the slotted lever.

The top part of one oli' the dra-\v-ba.rs A is provided with a vertical slot, in which is plaoed a latch-pin, ll I, pivoted to the draw-bar at L. The part ll ot' the latch-pin projects out at nearly right angles to the part l, so that when the latter hangs in a vertical position, as at Fig. 1, the purt- H lies in a slot, Z, formed in the lever l) Gr shown in same, Fig. 4. This arrangement is sneh that when the pin l is in a vertical position, as shown at Fig. l, it will look into the link (J, and so that when the link l) strikes the pin the latter will rise up, as at Fig. Q bnt not high enough for the lever D G to eateh in notch K-and then fall inside of the link to couple the ears. To un'eouple the ears from the platform, all that is required is to bear down on that end ot' the lever l) G shown at G; and, when the oars are to be unconpled by a person standing on the top of the ear, a rod can be attaehed to the lever and to the end ot' the oar i'or that purpose.
