Description
UNITED STATES JOHN S. BltOlVN, OF SOHENEOTADY, NET YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAPSTANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,548, dated July 4, 1871.
To alt whom t 'may concern:
3e it known that I, JOHN S. BROWN, of Schenectady, in the county oi' Schenectady and State of New York, have inventtal a new and Improved ltemovable Head for Oapstans; and I do hereby declare that the iollmving is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying dra-wing forming part oi' this speciiieation, in which Figiue l represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a capstan provided with the removable head. Fig. 2 is a top view of the capstan. Fig. 3 an inverted plan view of the head.
Similar letters of' reference in die-ate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to provide capstans for ships or other purposes with removableheads to which the levers for rotating them are applied.
Oapstans are usually provided with series of sockets for the reception of the operating-lcvers5 and iii' two or more capstans are used on one ves sel or apparatus, the sides of' each one are pierced for the reception ofthe levers. The body ofthe capsta-n is weakened by the sockets, and made expensive besides 5 and, furthermore, by the old arrangement two capsta-ns of equal size could not be put near together, as room i'or the length ofthe levers had to be left between them.
My invention consists in the il'nprovements upon capstans, hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawing represents a capstan of suitable size and shape connected with suitable gearing or other machinery, but made without sockets for the reception of the working levers. B is a block, of cylindrical or other shape, and such size that it can be put upon the eapstan, as in Fig. 1. The block B has projecting or receding sockets a a for the reception of the operatinglevers, and has downwardly-projectng ears 'b b, which strike projecting lugs c of the capstan to revolve the same when it is turned by the levers. The block or head B can readily be taken oit the ca-pstan and put upon another, so that one head will serve a number of eapstans; thereby, furthermore, two capstans can be placed close together, the head being used on either, and the levers being thereby held above the one not used. In place of the ears b and lugs c, equivalent connections, such as groovesand tenons, pins, or other devices, may be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the two windlass-bases with one another and with the single removable cap, which can be used on either base for varying the speed and power, all arranged so that the bases can be pla-ced closer together, as when provided with independent caps.
.JOHN S. BROVN.
