JAMES BROVN, OF BAY RIDGE, NEW YORK.
Specication forming part of' Letters Patent No. 116,516, dated July 4, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JAMES BROWN, of Bay Ridge, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fiber-Cleaning Mach inc; and l do hereby decla-re that thc followin is a full and exact dcscription ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
'lhis invention has for its object the production. ol" a machine which shall be capable of thoroughly cleaning and dressing vegetable iibcrs in an expeditious and cconomimtl manner, and consists in certain details of constructilm, as will be fully des ribed hereinatter.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe. fully its construction and operation.
A represents a trame-work, of any suitable construction. B .represents a cylinder, having a shaft, I), hung in proper bearings in the trame A, and provided with a suitable handle, b', or other means for givin it a revolvin motion. rllhe shaft I) is so constructed and. hung in the bearings as to be capable of a longitlulinal mm'ement from side to side of the frame. This result is preferably accomplished by lengthening` the bearings of the shaft, as shown in Fig. 2, and providing it with suitable shoulders for properly limiting its move ment. G represents a flap or door located in the cylinder B, which is intended for griping one end of the ibrous substance to be treated. D represents a series of heckles or teeth, formed of si nglc teeth, al, as shown, which are constructed preferably of steel, with tapering points, as clearly indicated in the drawing. The members of the series are contiguously arranged in a continuous row at one end of the frame B, as is clearly shown in the drawing. E represents a trough for c011- taining water, in which the lower portion of the cylinder revolves.
The operation is as follows: One end of the fibrous substance to be treated is securely attached to the cylinder by means of the griping device O. rllhe cylinder is then rapidly revolved in any proper manner, by which means the free ends of the fibrous substance are thrown outward by centrifugal force, and are caused to come into contact violently with the heckles or teeth D, through which they are. drawn by the continued revolution of the cylinder. As the points ofthe teeth are made tapering, and as their larger por-` tions lie contiguous to each other, it follows that a felge-shaped opening is left between the teeth into which the iibrous substance is whipped. It thcrelorc follows, necessarily, that the teeth not only serve to divide the liber, but also to scrape it as it is drawn through the lower part of the wedgeshaped opening. By giving the cylinder the slight lateral play permitted by the longitud inal movement of the shaft every portion of the substance being treated is continuously exposed to the action of the teeth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters .Pat-ent, is-

2. The cylinder B, adapted to move laterally, as described, in combination with the stationary heckles upon the frame A, as set forth.
