SYDNEY E. MATTHEWS, OF VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
Application filed March 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, SYDNEY E. MA'r'rHnws, a subject of the King of Great Britain, rcsiding at Victoria, in the Province of British Colui'nbia and Dominion of'Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in ll Iusic-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a music leaf turner, and has for its primary ohject to provide a device of this character wherein the leav s of sheet music will he successively turned without necess ta ting the fingering of each sheet of music for this purpose.
Another object of the invention the provision of device of this character wherein the construction thereof is of novel form so as to permit its use on the music rests of pianos, organs or the like, or upon music stands or racks to automatically turn the spective leaves of music when placed thereon.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a music leaf turner wherein. the leaves of the music can be turned back after the automatic action of the device, thus enabling the quick and easy handling of the music while the musical instrument is being played.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of his character which is simple in construction,v reliable and ellicient in operation, stron durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, comhination and arrangement of parts as wil be hereinafte ully described, illustrated in the accoir'ian nng drawings, and pointed out the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is front ele vation of a music leaf turner constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view throu h a piano showing the m sic leaf turner in edge elevation applied. Fig. 3 a top plan view with the top poi .ion of the bracket broken away. Fig. 4 .i .cal transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a fiagincntarv perspective view of one of "he turning arms. Fi 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the music leaf turner comprises a hanger A which constitutes the frame and includes a Patented Dec. 28, 191 5.
Serial No. 17,574.
shank or column 5 and a cross head 6 which is in the form of a channeled rail having threaded therein. set screws 7 so that the rail can he hung upon the front upper panel or section of a piano, organ or the like or upon a rack or and for supporting music, and fastened thereto. (in the end opposite the head C is a right angular hearing S, while mounted upon the shank or stem 5 at spaced intervals are hearings 9. and in theso hearings 8 and 9 is journaled a slidahle operating shaft 10 which controls the locking mechanism for the music leaf turning arms hereinafter fully described. 4
lilounted upon the shank or column near the head 6 thereof. is a bracket 11 through which is passed the shaft 10, and within this bracket are positioned a plurality of disks or wheels 12 in which are fixed the music leaf turning arms 13, the wheels or disks 12 being journaled upon a stud axle ll: mounted in the bracket 11, and each wheel or disk at its periphery is provided with a. stop 15 with which engages a ratchet dog 16, these dogs heing swingingl sup mrted upon a pivot 17 common thereto and mounted in the said bracket 11 so as to lock the wheels or disks against rotation when. engaged therewith.
The dogs are formed with extensions 18 to which are connected coiled retractilc springs 19, the same being also connected to the music leaf i'Jurning arms 13 and are trained about the peripheries of the disks or wheels 12 so that on the releasing of the dogs 16 the arms 13 will he swung in one direction under the tension of the springs 19 for the turning of the leaves of the sheet music, the dogs 16 being released in a manner presently described.
Formed on the shaft 10 is a cam projection 20 which i. adapted to act upon the respective extensions 18 of the dogs 16 for relea sing the same from locked engagement with the disks wheels 12 so as to release the music leaf turning arms 13 for the turning of the l... or wheels 11/ are i ed in their peripheries with notches 21., VLLILQ formed on the shaft 10 is a lug 22 so that the shaft 10 is limited in its downward movement until the notches 21 register with the lug 22, hereby permitting the passing of the arm from one wheel or disk to the other when the shaft 10 is lowered in its boa rings.
Suitably hinged to the bearing 8 beneath the same is an operating key or wing 23,
T he disks while formed at the lower end of'the shaft 10 is a right angular extension 24 which is provided with a hook end 25 loosely engagin in an eye 26 formed on the under face or the key or wing so that on depressing the latter the shaft 10 will become lowered in the hearings 8 and 9 for bringing the cam projection 20 into engagement with the lot g dogs 16 to release the disks or wheels for the turning of the arms 13, the latter being}; provided with snag fasteners or clips 2! for the detachable engagement of the leaves therein of the sheet music, and in this inner the lea es or sheets of the music ed to turning ar normal 13 me locked by the dogs 1% at side of the bracket 1.3, and th therein are disposed h relation to the 10. 1 New E! the shaft e cam proction 20 into engagement with the uppershy rel-melon, the rippereel so on, the first arm 13 to be "no will he released for the swinging or tnr. i of the music, Tyre notch 21 in the uppermost or wheel 12- has been brought into re with the lug on the shaft 10 so that on the next depression of the wing or key 93 the shaft 10 can become lowered a snfiiciei'it distance to engage the rent dog 18 for the roles e thereof from en gz'agi'anen with the next disl: or wheel 12 so that the second arm 13 can he turned. This action is repeated. until all of the arms 13 hare been turnee. Should at any time it be necessary to turn bacl; a leaf or sheet of the music, the same can be readily acconr plished by the swinging of any one of the arms from left to right, the springs 19 being designed to automatically shift the ni'st sheet or leaf arms 13 from right to left when released by the dogs 16 on manipulating the key or wing 28 hereinbefore set forth.
Surrounding the shaft 10 is a coiled spring 28, one end of which is fixed to one of the bearings and the oth r end fixed to the shaft, and this spring is designed to act upon the latter to raise the same to normal position after the key or wing 23 has been depressed. Located in the bracket 11' is a stop pin 29 which limits the swinging movement of the arms 13 when moved from right to is From the foregoin description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more eutended explanation has been omitted.
ll liat is claimed is i music leaf turner comprising a hanger having a column, a bracket fixed on the colurm, an o; crating hey mounted for swinging movement at the lower end of the colunr plurality Wheels journaled in the bracket, music leaf turning arms fixed in said wheels, means for in ring the Wheels in one direction, means for locking the wheels against rotation by the means for moving the same, hearings on said column,
a shaft slidahly Zlopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
