citizen of the United States, residing at lVaubay, in the county ofDay, State of South Dakota, have I invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear,.and exact descr ption of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to-which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a binder attachment. An object of the invention" is to provide means on'the binder for varying the speed with which the binder head operates; With this and other objects in view,;such as-will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises thecombination and. arrangement of parts asherein set forth and subsequentlyclaimed.

Referring to the drawing by reference characters wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views, the binder is indicated generally by the reference character 1 and the head by reference character 2. A drive chain 3 from the main drive shaft of the binder passes over sprockets 4 and 5, the sprocket 4 being mounted on a shaft 6 fixed in bearings to the binder. One end of the shaft 6 is supported in a bearing box 7 in a bracket 8, which bracket is secured to the lowermost platform 9 of the binder. Fixed to this shaft 6 is a gear wheel 7 having teeth 8 on one side thereof which teeth mesh with teeth 9 on the side of an additional gear 10, which gear is mounted on a shaft 11 and free to rotate thereon, but held against sliding movement on the said shaft by collars 12 which bear against the sides of the said gear 10; This gear 10 is provided with additional teeth 13 on the opposite side thereof. Slidably mounted and'free'to r0- tate on the shaft 11 is a gear 14, whichhas teeth 15 on one of its faces around the-edge thereof and teeth 16 on the other face, which teeth extend completely around the face. The shaft 11 is extended beyond-this gear andhas fixed thereto at its extremity a small clutch number 17 having teeth 18 on its face adjacent the gear 14. This gear 14 has sprocket teeth 19 formed on its periphery and a chain 20 is mounted: onhthegear so as to be in contact with the-sprocket teeth. This-chain passes about the binder head sprocket 21, whichv isslidably, keyed on a; shaft 22. A forked link 23 is .engaged at one'of its ends with the gear14:andits other end with the Sprocket 21. Secured" to this link-23 is a" chain tightener 24 wl1icl1--en-- gages the chain20 for maintainingthe same= in tight relation to its: driving gear and sprocket. A rod 25 is-attached-to the link 23-and extends to the'side of the machine: so)" that the gear 14 and'thesprocket 21 may be slhifted on the shafts 11 and 22, respective y.- ItListto be noted that the sprockets 4 and 5 are of equal diameters so that the shafts 6 and 11 will be driven at the same speed. The change in speed of the sprocket 14 is due, however, to the fact that when it is driven by the shaft 11 it will be connected directly to this shaft by the clutch member 18, but when it is driven by the shaft 6 it will be connected to this shaft by means of the intermeshing gears 7 and 10, the relative size of which controls the speed. The chain 3 through its connection with the sprockets 4 and 5 normally rotates the shafts 6 and 11, respectively, so that the gear 7 and clutch member 17 are normally rotated, the same being fixed to the said shafts. By virtue of the engagement of the gear 7 with the gear 10, this latter car which is loose on the shaft 11 is rotated.
When it is desired to operate the binder head at slow speed the rod 25 is pulled outwardly from the machine, which shifts the gear 14 toward the gear 10 until the teeth 15 thereon engage the teeth 13 of the adjacent face of the gear 10, the said gear 14 is then rotated loosely on the shaft 11 and through its connection with the sprocket 21 operates the binder head. When it is desired to operate the binder head at high speed the rod 25 is pushed inwardly on the machine,
thus shifting the gear 14 until the teeth 16 thereon engage with the teeth 18 on the small clutch member 17. The rotation of the shaft 11 then causes, through the operative connection between the gear 14 and the reduced when cutting thin or short grain and it may be increased when cutting heavy or long grain. I
\Vhile I have shown a particular embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment for it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
What is claimed is '1. In combination with a binder frame,
.a binder head, a sprocket connected to and arranged to actuate said head, a drive shaft, a sprocket slidably mounted thereon and rotatable independently thereof, the said sprocket having gear teeth on the side faces thereof, a chain passing over said first men tioned sprocket and said last mentioned sprocket, a clutch member secured tothe drive shaft and arranged to engage the gear teeth on one side of the last mentioned sprocket, a second drive shaft, a gear secured Copies of this patent may be, obtained for five cents each, by'addressing the to said second drive shaft and a gear inter- .meshing with the last mentioned gear and arranged to intermesh with the teeth on the other side of the second mentioned sprocket, whereby upon the rotation of the second driveshaft the said sprocket will be rotated Q independently of the first mentioned drive shaft. v
