FLUSHING APPARATUS.v

lALBER'J J. COBURN, OF NEVI ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FLUSHING APPARATUS.
Lies-,22s.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, MM5.
Application filed June 24, 1915. Serial No. 36,110.
To all whom t may concern Y Be it known that I, ALBERT J. COBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of'Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements inV Flushing Apparatus, of
.that way contribute to the reliable action and general efficiency of the apparatus notwithstanding the simplicity thereof and the small number of parts it comprises. v
@ther advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which: f
Figure l is a vertical section showing the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section taken in a plane above the non-return means of the casing, as indicated'by the line 2--2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail elevation showing theside valve that I prefer to employ for the passage of water from the tank to the interior of the vertically-movable casing subsequently to the first low of water down the down pipe.
Referring by numeral to the said drawings: 1 is a flushing tank designed to be supplied with water in the conventional manner or any other manner compatible with the purpose of my invention, and 2 is the down pipe clamped or otherwise suitably fixed to the bottom wall of the tank l and extending upwardly therein as shown. The said down pipe 2 is provided in its lower portion witha contraction 3 for an important purpose hereinafter set forth, and at its lower end the down pipe is designed to be connected with the usual pipe (not shown) to lead flushing water to a water closet bowl.
4 is the vertically-movable,casing which surrounds the down pipe 2 in the tank 1, and is designed to be connectedat its upper end to a lever la or other means through the medium of which it may be conveniently raised. The said casing is preferably, though not necessarily, of even diameter throughout its height, and in its lower end wall 5, which snugly surrounds the down pipe 2, are apertures G, designed to enable the water in the tank l to seek its level in the casing. l
Any suitable non-return means may be employed to normally permit the upward passage of water through the apertures 6 and check the return thereof when the casing is raised with water therein. I prefer, however, to employ for the purpose the semi-annular clack valves 7, preferably of sheet-metal, which are hinged at 8 to the casing 4 and are designed to normally rest on the bottom wall of the casing or slightly above said bottom wall.
Formed in the side wall of the casing 4L is an opening 9 which is preferably, though not necessarily, provided to permit water to pass from the tank l into the casing 4 after thel siphon action. The said opening 9 is controlled by an inwardly opening clack valve l0, hinged to the casing wall as indicated by 1l.
The contraction 3 in the down pipe is arranged in a plane adjacent to the bottom of the tank; the said contraction in the present embodiment being formed in a casting which forms the lower part or a continuation of the down pipe. In practice the contraction 8 serves to bring the water into small compass-z'. e., contracts the descending body of water, and cuts out all air, and this without materially lessening the volume of water which contributes to the production of a perfect vacuum in the casing.
Vhile I prefer for the reason stated to employ the valve l0 as well as the -non-return means at the bottom of the casing 4, I would have it distinctly understood that when desired the non-return means at the bottom of the casing may alone be employed or the non-return means or valve 10 at the side of the casing may alone be employed without departure from the scope of my claimed invention.
Y starts to ,flow` Vdown the pipe 2,' outward pressure on the valves 1s relieved and hence the Water in the tank is able to unseat said `valves andv enter the casing; the valve 9 at this time serving to-v permit a large volume of Water to pass fromthetank to the casing which makes the employment or said valve Qpreferable.
another joperation. The flared mouth 2? tends to throw Water to the vertical center of pipe 2 which has the eiiect of sealing the pipe against the entryv of air through the closet duct.A y
`Having, described my invention, What I claiml and desire to secure by Letters-Pat ent, is: Y
l. ln a iiushing apparatus, the combination of ral tank, a down pipe therein, a ver'- ticallymovable easing also arranged in the Copies of'this patent may be obtained for Ative cents each, by, addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Subsequently to the operation, described, the casing 4 gravitates tothe po- A sition shown in Fig. l so as to be ready for tank and surrounding the down pipe andV having an apertured bottom Wall and an apertured side Wall, non-return means in the casing complementary to the aperture in the bottom Wall and the Vaperture in the side Wall, respectively, andmeans through the medium of WhichY theoasing may be raised.
2. In a flushing apparatus, the 'combinaf tion With the bottom Wall of a flushing tank, a casting arranged in said bottom Wall Vand having an vinterior contraction and an ey.`V
terior'thread and Valso having a flange to bear against one side'ofthe tank Walha threaded clampingV mounted on Vthe casting and arranged to bear againstvthe' other side of said tank-Wall, aldoWn pipe threaded oni theupperportion of saidcast-A ing, a casing surrounding saidv down pipe and having an aperture for the entry of Water from the tank and non-return vmeans for Vcontrolling said aperture, and means" the casmg` Washington, D. C.
