Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan of the bottom halfof a comb head with the parts constructed in accordance withthis invention and certain of said parts shown in section on the plane of the top of the comb head casting; Fig. 2 same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the arm stud also insection; Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the link with its parts separated therefrom and shown partly in elevation; and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the driving shaft.
The invention is shown as applied to a doffer comb head comprising a main casting 10, a crank spindle or driving shaft 11 driven by a pulley 12 thereon, and a comb shaft 13 connected with a vibrating shaft 14. It has been made larger than would have been necessary if it did not have the two hollow'projections at its ends connected by a comparatively thin but wide body. nesses at'the angles between the body and vtheprojections and these weaknesses had to be compensated for' by making the device comparatively large. It has been found in practice that this p'artbreaks frequently and not'only necessitates expense for repairs but necessitates the stopping of the machine for considerable periods of time. also occasionally breaks with similar results. According to this'invention ball bearings are arranged in these parts in such a way that the ball'bearings' will all be located on one part, which in itself can be made of a fiat piece of steel without the" projections ref'erred t0 and the other one of these two pieces can also be simplified to such an extent that it can be made of steel. In this way we find that the speed can be very materially increased thus adding a very high percentage to the amount of production and yet the changes made are in the direction of simplicity, and breakage is reduced. Moreover generally if anything breaks it is a comparatively simple part that is easily and quickly replaced.
Referring now to the drawings again it will be seen that the crank spindle 11 is provided on the end with an eccentric projecting crank 15. The link 16 which takes the place of the old link is a fiat member having no material projections and easily made of steel. This member is provided with two recesses 17 therein each one adapted to receive a ball retainer 18 which fits up against a ridge 19 on one side of the link. The ball retainers are held in position by a plate 20 which is screwed or otherwise fixed to the link, and has opposite pairs of arms partly encircling; the ball retainers and holding them in position. The crank stud 15 enters one of the ball retainers and the other one receives a stud 22 which is fixed in a steel arm 23 which is fixed to the shaft 14: by a screw 24 or in any other desired way.
