EDWARD M. MADDEN AND SHATTIECE D. ROBERTS, (ADMINISTRATORS THOMAS D. ROBERTS, DEOEASED,) OF MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCK-SAW FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,490, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that THOMAS D. ROBERTS, de.- ceased, late of Middletown, in the countyot Orange, in the State oi' Neur York, did, during his f lifetime, invent certain Improvements in the Frames of Buck-Saws; and we, EDWARD M. MAD- Y DEN, administrator, and SHATTIEOE D. ROBERTS,
administratrix of the estate of said THOMAS D. ROBERTS, do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, the object ofthe invention being to strengthen the frame in straining the saw that is contained therein; and l it consists in the construction and application oi'a metallic brace to the frame in` such manner as to secure the object aimed at, and thereby create a new article of manufacture.
In the drawing, Figure l is a side view of the saw-frame complete. Fig. 2 is a side view of the f strengthening-brace, and Fig. 3 is a transverse view ot' the same.
A A are the usual end pieces to the frame. B 1s a strain-brace, made either square, round, orother desired form' or shape. O is the common straining' screw-rod,having screw-nut c, by which the saw is strained in the usual way. D D are metal strengthening-braces', formed to have the open thimble Dl ot' the shape to receive and fit around the brace B, and has inclined and bent arms d projecting from opposite sides of the thimble. At d' these arms bend, to be parallel with the sides of the Opening through the thimble, and the Shanks formed by so bending are inserted and t in holes in the end pieces A, and are thereheld by pins d, that pass through both the end piecesA and Shanks of the braces D. The introduction of the strengthening-braces D, constructed to receive and embrace the strain-brace B, makes the frame much stron ger by preventing all the force exerted by turning the screW-nut onto strain-rod C from tending to break the ends A at the point where the brace B enters them, as by the use of these braces D the effect is thrown away from such point, and is distributed to where the Shanks of brace D enter the end pieces A A; hence the end pieces may be made smaller, be lighter, and have the same strength. The brace 'B may also be made smaller, and, consequeutly,'be lighter, and still retain its strength,"because the distance between the `points embraced Vby the thimbles of braces D lessens the length `of the brace, on
which the lateral strain could be applied, as n much as the braces project inward from the end pieces A A or from the shoulders of brace B.
