ROTARY ENGINE.
To all 'wko-m it may concern.'
v Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. vWELL- STEED, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Brampton, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented la newnation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described 'and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the 1nvention herein disclosed can be made within thev scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view through av rotary engine constructed according to and embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation taken from the adjustable end of the stator, a portion of the clamping ring being broken away to show the detail structure of the head of the stator and the removable head of the rotor. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the members of the piston.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral. 1 designates the stator, which is an open ended cylindrical member having an integral head 2 provided with a shaft journal opening 3. A circumferential ring 4 is disposed adjacent the outer open end of the stator, and thus provides a packing means adjacent the periphery of the detachable stator head 6, which is provided with the cylindrical and tapered opening 7 which is eccentrically disposed, and the purpose of which will presently appear. The axes of the opening 7 and the journal opening 3 are alined, the purpose of which 'also presently appear.
Formed in the outer rim of the mouth of the stator 1 are the internal threads 8, for the reception of the external threads 9 of the stator head clamping and adjusting ring 10, said ring being adapted to be rotated to Specification of Letters Patent.

The rotor comprises the cylindrical member 12 and a removable disk head 22, the member 12 being provided with the diametrically disposed recess 13 which is open at three sides and is sealed at one side by means of the removable head 22. Disposed, for sliding movement in the recess 13 is the piston which consists of the two members 14 and 15, the detail structure of one of which is clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. Each of these members is provided with a plurality of'spring receiving bores 17 for the reception of the springs 18, one to each pairV of alined bores of the respective members 14 and 15.` Each member is provided with the overlapping portion 19, which permit of the proper' guiding of the members during the rotation of the vrotory and'yet the necessary movements to and from each other, all as particularly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Formed in the flat head portion of the rotor member 12 are a plurality` of peripheral recesses 20, for the reception of the lugs 21 which are carried by the disk head 22 of the rotor.. Thus the head 22 is properly connected to the member 12 so as to rotate therewith and yet at the same time seal the recess 13 so that the piston is properly held within the rotor. A shaft 23 is carried by the disk head 22, while the shaft 24 is carried by the member 12 and extends in an opposite direction to the shaft 23 through the stuffing box 25.
The two pipes 26 and 27 are disposed relatively to the stator as shown in Fig. 3, so that the pressure fluid may be admitted through either one and exhausted through the other thereof.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that any wear upon the rotor and interior of the stator may be properly taken care of bymeans of the adjusting ring 10 and the slidably and adjustably mounted stator head 6, and that by reason of the fact that the rotor head 22 is detachably connected to the rotor member 12, access may be had to the piston members of the rotor without the complete removal of the rotor from the stator chamber.
By removing the head 6, the parts of the rotor may be readily had access to and all adjustments can be made from such end.
Disposed in the outer end of the respective members 14 and 15, are the packing.
