Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed May 15, 1914. Serial No. 838,822.
This invention relates to stove lid lifters and the principal objects of the invention are in improving that type of stove lid lifter having two handle members pivoted together and arranged to operate an expansible lid engaging foot whereby stove lids with differently separated lugs may be properly engaged and manipulated.
Another object of the invention is to construct a lifter of this character in a simple and inexpensive manner and to provide novel means for securing the handle actuating spring.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with-the accompanying drawing,
which forms apart of this application, and in which I Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. i is a section on the line 44. of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent the separate handle members each of which is constructed of a piece ofsheetfmetal folded upon itself, as shown in Fig. 3, and flattened out to form double-flanged jaw portions that terminate into lid engaging ends 3. A portion of the flanges of one jaw are spaced apart in a transverse and longitudinal direction so as to accommodate therebetween a portion of the opposite jaw and to allow the passage through both jaws of a pin 4:, which pivot- I ally connects the members 1 and 2 together. The handle portions 5 of the handle members l and 2 are folded into substantially U-shaped formv and are each perforated and provided with struck-up portions 6 and 7 producing an irregular channel to receive 1 the terminals of a U-shaped leaf spring 8 and hold the same in position between the handle members without other fastening devices. This simplifies the construction considerably and renders it less expensive to manufacture.
It will be noted that both ends 3 lie in the same plane and act to form an expansible lug engaging foot.
What is claimed is:-
A lid lifter comprising a pair of companion members each formed from rigid sheet metal bent to provide an outwardly bowed handle portion and a contacting double flange jaw portion, a pin pivotally connecting intermediate portions of said jaws together, a portion of the flange of one jaw to one side of the pin toward the handle portion being spaced apart ina transverse and longitudinal direction so as to accommodate a portion of the opposite jaw when the handles are moved toward each other, and the remaining portions of the jaws on the opposite side of the pin arranged to abut at the inner edges so as to hold said spring under a-predetermined tension.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
