To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ODAVILLE YATES, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Guards for Cords or Wires of Telephone Sets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in guards or holders for the cords or wires of telephone sets and has particular application to a guard for use in conjunction with portable telephone sets.

In carrying out the present invention, it

is my purpose to provide a cord guard or holder whereby the cords leading to the transmitter and receiver will be held to the standard or post of the telephone set in an out of the way position so as to eliminate bunching of the cord beneath the b-ase of the set when the latter is placed on a desk, table or other support. i

It is also my purpose to provide a device of the class described which may be readily and quickly applied to the standard or post of the telephone set and removed therefrom and which when in applied position will hold the cords out of the way.

A further object of 'my invention is to provide a slack take-up device whereby the slack in the cord leading from the bell box of the telephone set to the base of the standard or post will be automatically taken up when the telephone set is not in use and which will permit the cord to be paid out when the telephone set is moved from place to place in the use thereof.

With the above and other objects in view,

the invention consists in the construction,

combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and fallingwithin the scope of the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a telephone set equipped with a guard and slack take-up de vice constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the guard showing the same in open position and removed from the telephone set. Fig. 3 is an end view of the guard in closed position. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the guard showing the latch for holding the same closed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the slack take-up device distended. A designates a portable telephone set comprising a standard or post 1 having the lower end thereof secured to the base 2 as 6 I usual and the upper end carrying the transmitter 3, anda receiver 4; normally supported by the forked extremity 5 of the arm 6 pivoted to the standard 1 adjacent, to the upper extremity thereof.

My improved guard or cord holder is indicated at 7 and, in the present instance,

comprises securing bands 8, 9 encircling the standard 1 adjacent to the upper and lower ends thereof respectively and each formed of two sections 10. One end of each section is pivoted to the adjoining extremity of the other section as at 11, while the remaining ends of the sections are extended outwardly as at 12 and spaced apart in parallelism. The space between the outwardly extending portions 12 of the sections 10 of the securing band 8 registers with the space between the outwardly extending portions of the sections 10 of thefsecuring band 9 and disposed within these spaces is a vertical tube 13 comrpisinglongitudinal sections 1%, 14 each secured to or formed integral with the adjacent outturned end portions 12 of the securing bands 8 and 9. The inner face'of one outturned end portion 12 of each securing band isequipped with an inwardly ex-' tending U-shaped strap 15, while the confronting face of the remaining outturned end portion has pivotally connected thereto as at 16 a strip 17 capable of vertical swing ing movement and having the bottom edge thereof formed with teeth 18 adapted to interchangeably engage the central portion of the strap 15 to hold the sections 10, 10 of the particular securing band clamped about the standard.

In practice,-the guard. 7 is opened up as gage each other and so form the tube. When the sections 14: are in tube formation the toothed edges of the strips 17 are engaged with the central portions of the straps 15, thereby holding the securing bands clamped aboutthe standard and the tube 13 in a vertical position parallel with the standard. Previous to the sections of the tube engaging each other, the cords or Wires 'of the telephone set are placed between the sections and held therein when the latter are assembled, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. By means of this construction, it will be seen that the cords leading to the transmitter and receiver are held in an out so as to prevent mutilation of the cords at the upper end of the tube.

In order to take up the slack in the cord connecting the transmitter with the bell boX or battery box of the telephone set, I employ a slack take up device, which, in this embodiment of my invention, comprises a helical spring20 having each coil thereof equipped with a number of hooks 21. This spring is of the contractile type andthe particular cord of the telephone set is trained around the coils thereof and held thereto by means ofthe hooks21, the convolutions of the cord lying within the coils of the spring. When the telephone set is idle and supported adjacent to the wall, the coils ofthe helical spring 2 are in normal retracted position thereby taking up'the slack in the cord. 0n the other hand, when the telephone set is pulled away from the wallfor use the coils of the spring are, distended and the convo-,

From the foregoing descriptiontaken in connection with the "accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. It will be seen that I have provided a-guard or holder for the cords of portable telephone sets 'whereby bunching of the cord beneath the base'of the telephone set when the latter is placed upon a stand or table is eliminated. A guard for portable telephonesets 1 comprising a rigid tube parallel with the vertical; standard of the telephone set and through which the wires leading into and out of the base pass, said tube having the upper" end thereof disposed in proximity to the upper end of the vertical standard to hold the wires elevated and comprising two longitudinal sections capable of relative movement, and means holding said sections in tube formation and connecting the same to the vertical standard of the telephone set.
