inn s r-arias Para GEORGE H. NICHOLAS, OF NEW YORK, N.
SHIRT.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I. GEORGE H. NICHOLAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shirt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v
This invention relates to mens shirts, especially adapted for use by laborers, machinist-s and the like, although, if desired, certain features of the invention may be embodied in neglige shirts of the better grade.
The invention has for its general objects to improve the design of shirts of the character referred to so as to be more durable. attractive in appearance and comparatively simple and inexpensive to make.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a ventilated shirt which is provided with a novel arrangement of reinforcing pieces and strips extending around the arm holes of the shirt body down the side seams and at the armpit portions of the sleeves, such reinforcing strips and pieces having eyelets through which air has ready ingress and egress due to the bellows action of the side portions of the shirt as the arms are moved up and down when working, and consequently there is produced a circulation of air close to the body which has a cooling and sanitary effect.
\Vith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangementof parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the shirt applied; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front view of the shirt stretched out flat; Fig. 3 is a similar rear view.
Referring to the drawing A designates the body of a shirt, which body is cut according to a common pattern, and B are the sleeves of the shirt, which are also of usual design. Each side seam l of the body is provided with reinforcing strips 0 made in Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 143:, 1915.

pairs and all symmetrically formed, each strip having a straight portion 2 and an arcuate portion 3, so that the reinforcing strips C will extend from the bottom of the shirt at the side seam to the top of the shoulder, or approximately to the top, the curved portions 3 extending around the arm opening of the shirt body. These reinforcing strips are applied to the outside of the shirt body and have their outer edges secured thereto by rows of stitching 4:, and their inner edges along the straight portions2 are secured together and to the body of the shirt by stitches 5 that form the seam between the front and back sections of the shirt body, while the inner edges of the curved portions 3 are secured by rows of stitching 6 to the sleeve B and to the body of the shirt. The reinforcing strips thus materially strengthen the shirt entirely around the arm opening and along the sides. If desired, the upper ends of the reinforcing strips C may extend under the outer extremities of the yoke D of the shirt body. The armpit portion of each sleeve is strengthened by triangular reinforcing pieces E which have their edges 7 fastened by the stitches 6 as such edges 7 extend under the reinforcing strips 0, and the edges 8 are sewed in the bottom or under seam 9, of the sleeve, which seam is sewed by a row of stitching 5", which is a continuation of the stitching 5 of the side seam of the shirt body. The edges 10 of the triangular reinforcing pieces E are secured to the sleeve by stitching 11. The reinforcing strips and pieces are provided with openings or eyelets 12 and the shirt body and sleeves are provided with openings which register with the openings in the reinforcing elements, and the edges of these registering openings are bound together, by buttonhole stitching.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A shirt of the class described comprising a body and sleeves, said body having armholes and side seams, reinforcing strips extending the full length of the side seams and substantially entirely around the arm openings and sewed to the body and sleeves, said strips and body having registering openings for permitting the ingress and In testimony whereof I have signed my egress of em, and trlangular relnforcmg name to thls speclficatlon 1n the presence of p1eceseach hav lng an edge sewed to the ,two.subserlb ng--W1tnesses.
seam in the sleeve and another edge sewed GEORGE H. NICHOLAS. to the seam between the sleeve and body of \Vitnesses:
the shirt, and anotheredge sewedto the C. BRAD AY,
sleeve. PHILIP D. ROLLHAUS.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for fivehcents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
