MEASURING-FAUCET.

Be it known that I, THOMAS F. STALEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Tallula, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring-Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved measuring faucet wherein means is provided to determine the amount of fluid or liquid to be drawn. I
It is the primary object of the present invention to construct a faucet wherein the weight of the liquid delivered or drawn is utilized to automatically actuate a sliding valve o1' cut-off.
The invention further aims to provide a faucet wherein the automatic cut-oft' valve is so arranged with respect to an operating element as to be actuated only in the event of delivery of a predetermined quantity of liquid to a suitable receptacle provided therefor.
As a still further object, the invention contemplates means whereby the operating element may be Set, to iny this manner provide for the delivery of a predetermined or measured quantity of liquid, which, when delivered, will, by its weight, have moved the said element to such extentvas to automatically releasethe said valve.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in thelfollowing specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application. n
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-

structed as to form when assembled non-communicating converging compartments 2 and 3 respectively. A cover 4 is mounted upon the casing 1 to effect at one end thereof a closure for the compartments 2 and 3. EX- tending longitudinally of the compartment 2 is a valve stem 5, one end of which projects exteriorly of the casing 1 through an opening 6 of the casing top 4, the said eX- tended end having an eye 7 attached thereto. The stem 5 is enlarged throughout a portion of its length as indicated at 8 to provide a shoulder 9 against which one end of an eX- pansion helical spring l0 abuts, the said spring being disposed within the compartment 2 to embrace the stem 5, its opposite end abutting the inner wall of the cover 4. Upon reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be noted that the casing 1 is so constructed as to forni a guide for the enlarged portion 8 of the valve steml A head or valve cut-off member 11, of the substantially fiat type, is formed integrally with and upon the opposite end of the valve stem 5 from that upon which the eye 7 is secured, the said valve, when in normal position, being disposed to cut off the outlet opening of the induction pipe or liquid passage way 12. Mounted upon the valve 11 and movable therewith is a section 13 of a faucet mouth,
the other section 14 of which is carried by the pipe 12 and, in the raised position of the valve 11 terminates in a plane the same as that of the section 13, to effect, when thus positioned, a mouth or outlet of ordi nary configuration. As an additional guide for the valve member 11, the extended portion 15 of the casing 1 is provided with guide strips 1,6 disposed in parallelism, one upon each side of the valve l1, the latter operating or sliding therebeneath, this arrangement being illustrated to advantage in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Extending into the other compartment 3 of the casing is a vertically movable operating element 16, one of the longitudinal edges of which is provided with teeth 17 of a predetermined pitch land nurnber. The teeth of the element 16 are adapted for meshing engagement with a segment 18 pivoted as at 17 between the sections of the casing and within what might be termed an intermediate compartment 19 thereof. The segment 18, in actual practice, performs the function of a trigger, and in this connection lis provided with a shoulder 20 which, in the raised position of the valve 11 is adapted for engagement with a lug 21 movable in one direction and immovable in the other, said lug being pivoted, as shown, to the valve stem whereby to cause the valve 11 to be maintained in its raised position until actuation of the member 16 moves the segment or trigger 18 sufiiciently to disengage said shoulder and said lug.
A suitably tensioned helical spring 22 is supported within the compartment 3, one end of the spring being attached to the element 16 and the opposite end to a sliding rack bar 23, said bar extending into the said compartment from the exterior thereof through an opening 24 in the cover I of the casing. As a guide for the rack bar 23, I provide a hollow auxiliary casing 25, at one side of which an opening 26 is formed, the latter providing for the engagement of a pawl 27 with the teeth of the rack bar 23, the said pawl being pivoted or fulcrumed as at 28 to the casing cover and extending as indicated in Fig. 1 through the opening 26 aforesaid. ring 29 or other suitable grip* ping device is formed on or attached to the rack bar 23 to provide for actuation of the element 16 during operation of the faucet. If desired, the pawl 27 may be spring pressed as indicated. at 30 for an obvious purpose.
@ne of the sections of the casing 1 is provided with an elongated opening 31, said opening being disposed at a point adjacent the lower end of the casing and at one side thereof, and over which a plate 32 is arranged, the said plate being also provided with an elongated opening 33 adapted for registration with the opening 31 of the casing. Suitable indicating or graduation marks may be delineated on the plate 32 for a purpose to be hereinafter fully claimed. Extending laterally of the element 16 through the opening 31 aforesaid is an indi eating element 31, the position of which with respect to the graduation marks on plate 32 will designate or indicate the amount of liquid to be drawn or delivered before actuation of the trigger 18 will take place. A hook member 35 is secured to the element 16 to provide for the suspension therefrom of the container or receptacle into which the liquid to be drawn is delivered.
The operation of the faucet is as follows: Should the operator desire a predetermined amount of liquid dispensed, the element 16 is raised to a predetermined position through movement of rack bar 23. The position of the element 34 with respect to the plate 32 will indicate the amount of liquid to be dispensed before actuation of trigger 18 will take place. Should the member 16 be raised. until element 34 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, it will be necessary that the spring 22 be fully expanded before trigger 18 will be released or moved to disengage lug 21. The moment lug 21 is released through movement of trigger 18, spring 10 will cause member 8 to move longitudinally of the faucet casing whereby to close the discharge passage way 12 as shown. It is to be understood that in adjusting the member 16, the tension of spring 22 will be in no way varied, the position of said spring with respect to the top of the faucet casing determining the degree of pull on hook member 35 necessary to actuation of trigger 18. It is evident that in the event of spring 22 being raised to its uppermost position, the travel of member 16 will consequently be greater and accordingly movement of trigger 18. lengthened. Should spring 22 be raised but little, indicating element 34 will register with one of the graduating marks indicating a small quantity of liquid on the dial plate, thereby necessitating but a slight pull on member 35 to actuate the trigger and dislodge the shoulder 20 from engagement with the lug 21. Lug 21 being spring pressed and movable in one direction, it is evident that member 8 may be raised and the closure device automatically set subsequent to a setting of member 16 through operation or manipulation of the rack bar 23. The weight of the liquid in proportion to the amount drawn having been previously determined, it is apparent that upon the dispensation of a certain quantity of liquid, the weight thereofI will sufficiently exert a downward pull upon the member v16 to actuate trigger 18 and withdraw shoulder 20 from engagement with lug 21, which lug, when disengaged will allow spring 10 to automatically close the mouth or opening of induction pipe 12.
From the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is apparent that the element 16 may be locked by the pawl 27 in the desired adjusted position: that by increasing the number of teeth of both trigger 18 and bar or element 16, various quantities of liquid ranging in amounts from a fraction of a gallon to a number of gallons may be measured and de termined by setting the said element to a corresponding degree; and that the cut-off or valve operable over the mouth of the passage way 12 is absolutely automatic in its operation and controlled entirely by the weight of the liquid delivered to the receptacle suspended from the hook 35.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eiiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes ,in details of construction,
proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a measuring faucet, a discharge spout having an outlet opening formed therein, a spring actuated sliding closure means, a lug upon said Closure means, a sliding receptacle-support, a pivoted segment mounted to engage with said support and said lug to maintain said closure means out of Contact with said outlet opening, and means to yieldingly maintain said receptacle-support against movement.
In a measuring faucet, a discharge spout having an outlet opening formed therein, a spring actuated sliding closure means, a lug upon said closure means, a sliding receptacle-support including a spring, a means to maintain said support in its adjusted position, a pivoted segment mounted to engage with said support and with said lug to maintain said closure means out of contact with the outlet opening, and an indicator on the receptacle support for the purpose specified, the said support being yieldingly movable against tension of said spring to actuate said segment and release said closure means, substantially as described.
3. A faucet including a casing having an outlet, a sliding valve normally closing said outlet, fastening means for maintaining sa id valve in a position whereby said outlet is opened, an operating element adjustable relatively to said casing, a yieldable support for said element, means for locking said element in its adjusted position, said element providing a support for the receptable into which the dispensed liquid is discharged, and means actuatable through movement of said element to release said fastening means and permit automatic closure of said outlet by said valve, said element being actuatable by the weight of the dispensed liquid within said receptacle.

A faucet including a casing having an outlet, a sliding valve normally closing said outlet, fastening means for maintaining said valve in a position whereby said outlet is opened, an operating element, said element being engageable with said fastening means, a spring support for said element, meats engaging said spring for adjusting said element relatively to said casing, means for locking said element in its adjusted position, said element providing a support for the receptacle into which the dispensed liquid is discharged, said element being actuatable by the weight of a predetermined amount of liquid when dispensed to release said fastening means and permit automatic closure of said outlet by said valve, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a measuring faucet, a casing havingr an outlet, a spring actuated sliding valve normally closing said outlet, a lug upon said valve, fastening means engaging said lug to maintain said valve in a position whereby said outlet is opened, and means including an adjustable member actuatable by the weight of the dispensed liquid and engageable with said fastening means to actuate the latter and disengage same from said lug to permit automatic closure of said opening by said valve, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. ln a measurimT faucet, a casing having an outlet, a spring actuated sliding valve normally closing said outlet, fastening means for maintaining said valve in a position whereby said out-let is opened, an element adjustable relatively to said casing, said element providing a support for the receptacle into which the dispensed liquid is discharged, a spring support for said element, a member movable relatively to said casing to maintain said member in its adjusted position, and means engaging said element and said fastening means for releasing the latter upon the discharge of a predetermined amount of liquid into the receptacle, the weight of the said liquid actuating` said element, as and for the purpose set forth.
