T. G. GEIERSBACH.
CASTER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. I4. 1915.

THEODORE`G. GEIERSBACH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CASTER.
Application filed April 14, 1915.
Vuseful Improvements in Casters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improv'ements in casters and the like and particularly to devices of that class which are chiefly adapted to be fitted upon the bottom of chairs, tables and other' articles of furniture to enable them to be easily rolled over the surface of the floor.
The objects of my invention are to provide a simple, cheap and durable device which can be easily attached to so construct Y it that it can be easily and quickly assembled and may be dismounted for repairs or replacements or for cleaning purposes and to so arrange the antifriction parts that when the device is in operative position, the article to which it is attached may be moved very easily. i
The above and other objects I accomplish as fully set forth in the following' specification and as particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which a preferred adaptation of my invention is shown.
In the drawings Figure l, represents a top plan view of my improved caster. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved caster. Fig. 8 is a. central vertical section through the improved caster. Fig. et is a detached bottom view of the top cap.
In referring to the preferred embodiment of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, like numerals designate corre- Sponding parts.
My improved caster briefly stated comprises a tubular housing, a top cap for said housing and a plurality of antifriction devices such as balls rotatably arranged in said housing with one of said devices projecting through the lower open end of the housing and being adapted to contact with and roll upon the surface of the floor.
As shown, the tubular housing` l, is arranged in vertical position and is of a cylindrical tapering form, see Fig. 3, and has Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1d, 1.915. serial no. 21,227.
the lower open extremity thereof Slightly reduced in circumference.
In my preferred adaptation, I employ two balls and 8, one being arranged vertically above the other and the upper ball being considerably smaller in size than the lower ball. rI'lie lower ball 2, lits fairly loose within the housingl and is prevented from dropping entirely through by the contracted lower end l. which is smaller in diameter than the ball.
The top cap is placed over the top mouth of the' housing` l, and is secured thereon by projections or lugs t5, which extend upward from the wall of the housing and are adapted to be bent inwardly into radial grooves i", formed in the top surface of the cap. In the caster illustrated I have shown these lugs 6, arranged at equal distances from each other on the housing and three corresponding placed grooves on the top cap but it should be understood that more or less may be employed as desired or other efficient means may be utilized to secure the top cap in place upon the housing.
The smal] upper ball 3 is supported in place upon and vertically over the large lower ball 2, by a center bearing 8, which is arranged in the undersurface of the top cap and consists of an annular depending` wall within which the ball partially fits and turns, the center socket or recess within said wall beingof the proper curved form to correspond with the spherical ball.
A screw 9, is attached to the center of the top surface of the top 'ap for securing the caster to the article of furniture.
In lieu of the screw 9 any other well known means of attachment may be employed.
IVhile I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment and adaptation of my invention, it should be understood that this is capable of a wide range of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, I therefore do not wish to be limited to the details of construction herein set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fiirly fall within the scope of the appended c aim.
What I claim is: In testimony whereof I have hereunto uf- In a device of the class described, a taperfixed my name in the presence of two Wt- 10 ing cyliiildrcal housing, antifrietioln devices nesses. e
in said ousing, a top cap on sai housing 1 1 5 provided with radial grooves in its top sui'- HEODORE G (VIEIERSBAC'H' 'face and lugs on said housing adapted to be Titnessesz bent inwardly over the housing to secure it RoBT. KLoTz,
in place. F. VEYAND.
