ADNA BROWN, OF SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT.

IMPROVEMENT IN CQASTING-WAGONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,409, dated June 27, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADNA BROWN, of Springfield, in the county of Windsor and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ooasting-Vagon; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing' and to the let ters of reference marked thereon makin g a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a coasting-wagon, to be used the same as coasting with sleds in winter time.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan View of my wagon.

A A represent the hind wheels, placed upon the ends of the axle B. On this axle is, in any suitable manner, secured the rear end of the bed C, having the seat D so arranged that theweight will come mainly upon the axle B. In the front end of the bed C is secured a iianged collar, E, through which passes a vertical post, G. The lower end of this post or shaft is forked, and has a Wheel, H, pivoted within it, upon which the front end of the wagon rests. To the upper end of the post Gr is secured a short bar, a, having its ends turned up, and between said ends is hinged or pivoted the tongue I. At a suitable point on the bed C is placed the fender J made of a single rod or wire, bent in suitable shape, and the ends of which pass downward through the bed, forming below the same the foot-rests or stirrups b b. The fender J is in the center supported by a brace, d. By means of the tongue I the wagon can be drawn up hill, and in going down hill it is steered by the tongue. Fig. 1 shows the position of the tongue for drawing, and Fig. 2 for steering. Itis, ofcourse, evident that substantially the same arrangement ofthe tongue may be used for two wheels at the front end instead oi one, as above described. A brake, K, is arranged within reach of the occupant of the seat D to control the velocity of the wagon.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The fender J and stirrups or foot-rests b b, when formed of one rod or wire, and supported by a brace, d, substantially as herein seti'orth.

2. The combination of the wheelsAA, axle B, bed C, seat D, collar E, post G, wheel or wheels H, tongue I, fender J, foot-rests b b, and brake K, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes vherein set fort-h.
