Be it known that I, PHILIP RICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vibratory Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. a i
The object of my invention is to provide an improved vibratory apparatus principally designed for use in the treatment of the ear and adapted to efiect rapid pulsations against an air body for the purposeof generating intermittent discharges of air.
'One of the objects of my invention is to provide a pulsating mechanism. one member of which is operated partly by electrical means and partly by gravity and mechamcal means.
A further object of the'invention is to provide mechanism which will generate intermittent discharges of air at a highrate of speed and which will at all times be accurately and sensitively responsive to control of the operator.
Other objects and novel features of my invention will be more fully disclosed in the accompanying drawings, and will be more particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a device embodying one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. 1 taken on line.33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the device of Fig. 3 shown detached therefrom. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on a solenoid core plunger. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a diagrammatical view showing the electrical circuit for my device. 7
Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different figures of the drawings.
In the specific form shown a base 1 1sprovided having a hollow interior 2 and a shoulder 3 on which a diaphragm 4 is disposed. A casing 5 is disposed upon a yielding washer 6 which is interposed between the diaphragm i and the casing 5 and the, parts are secured as illustrated by screws 7. The diaphragm 4, together with base 1, forms an air chamber, as indicated at 2, which is provided with an intake 8. An outlet for the chamber 2'is providedwith a valve 9 and a flexible tube 10 having any suitable or desired form of instrument 11 at the discharge end thereof. The casing 5 is preferably hollowed out and is provided with a supporting plate or disk 12 on which a solenoid 13 is disposed. The solenoid is provided with an interior sleeve l-f-t, forming a core bore,
and providing a wearing guiding part for a plunger 15 which is also the core of the solenoid.
The plunger 15, as illustratedin Fig. 5, is provided with a lower chamber 16 in which is disposed a spring 17 mounted upon a removable tapped plug 18, for removal and insertion of the spring 17. A cap or top 19 is mounted on spring 17 and lies in the path of and is adapted to be engaged by a plunger rod 20. The plunger 15 is provided with a contracted portion having a bore 21 to guide the lower end of the plunger rod 20. The contracted portion provides a shoulder 22 upon which the lower end of a spring 23 rests, the upper end of the spring engaging the collar 2% secured to the rod 20. The upper end of the rod 20 is guided in a sleeve 25 which is tapped into the plunger 15, as shown in Fig. 5. The ex tremity of the rod 20 is provided with a removable impact tip member 26 formed of non-conducting material and which is removably secured to the rod 20, as illuustrated. 7
It will be seen from the foregoing that relativemovement of the rod 20 with respect to the plunger 15 which is sufiicient to cause the rod 20 to engage the part 19, will be resisted first by spring 23 and subsequently by a spring 17, thereby affording a plurality of spring devices offering a cumulatively increasing resistance to relative movement of the rod 20 with respect to the plunger 15. The plunger 15 is disposed in the solenoid, as indicated in Fig. 3, and when the sole noid is energized the plunger will be lifted, as a solenoid core, and when the solenoid is deener 'ized the plunger will drop by gravity into engagement with the diaphragm 4 so that the resulting concussion in chamber 2 will generate intermittent discharges of air through instrument 11. A suitable stop'is provided limiting upward movement of the core 15 under the action of solenoid 13 and such upward movement of plunger 15 will be arrested by the spring devices 23 and 17 so that the recoil of the spring devices will act, in addition to what the reverse movement being the positive movement, which is downward and the initial movement which is upward, being the negative movement, in the form shown.
The stop device which serves to limit upward movement of the plunger under the action of the solenoid is herein shown as a short circuiting means, or means for cutting out the solenoid to deen'ergize the same, and
. the same may consist of spring contact arms 27 and 28 having opposing contact t ps 29' and 30, which may be of platinum, 01 other suitable metal. An abutment 31 positively limits upwardmovement of arm 28 against the action of the plunger rod upon arm 27.
' The abutment 31 is desirably adjustable and may be in. the form of a screw tapped into the. cap 32 of the casing 5. A lock nut 33 serves to hold the abutment in its adjusted position.
Arm 28 is connected withone link 34' from a source of'supfply of current 35. Ann 28 is also connected by conductor 86 with one terminalof the solenoid winding. The other lead 37fr0'm the source of current 35 is electrically connected with a plug 38 which is mounted inan insulating bushing 39 in the casing 5. An actuating key 40, provided with a contact head 41, is slidably meunted in the plug 38 and is held in the position shown with the head 41 against the plug 38 by a spring 42, the latter being interposed between the bushing 39 and the end 43 of the key. The head 41 'is adapted to close circuit, when the key is pressed inwardly, byengaging a spring contact 44 mounted upon a contact strip 45. Contact strip 45 is connected with arm 27 by a conductor 46 and the strip 45 isalso connected by a conductor 47 with one terminal of the solenoid winding. I a
a It will be seen by reference to Fig. 4 that current flows from lead 34- through arm 28 and thesolenoid out to strip 45 and contact spring 44 through which and the head 41 circuit is completed throughlead 37 back to the source of current. It will thus be seen that when the key is pressed inwardly to enga e the head 41 with the sp'ring44 circuit will be closed and the solenoid will be energized to elevate the plunger 15 and cause an impact of the tip 26 with arm 27 thereby" engaging the contact 29 with contact 30 of arm 28. This will short circuit the current and cut out thesolenoid and the resulting spring action of the spring devices 23 and 17 will drive the plunger 15, downwardly against the diaphragm 4.
