To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. WArrE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in X-Ray Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an automatic circuit breaker for use in conjunction with the primary circuit of an X-ray apparatus, and has for its object the production of such a device which will be certain in action, simple in construction, not liable to get out of order, and one which will produce a predetermined exposure.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing f forming a part of this specification in which the figure represents a diagrammatic view of a circuit breaker made in accordance with my invention :-1 represents any suitable electro magnet, the magnetic circuit of which is closed by means of a plunger 2 of soft iron.
3 represents a rod with notches 4 into which the end 5 of the plunger 2 engages for holding the rod 3 in an elevated position.
Located upon the outer end of the plun er 2 is a spring 6 abutting against the face 7 of the electro-magnet to return the plunger 2 when the current through the coil is broken.
8 is a metal cylinder provided at its lower extremity with a valve 9 for regulating the amount of air forced out of the opening 10 by a plunger 11, operating within said cylinder. Said plunger is connected by means of a ball and socket joint 12 with the said rod 3.
Mounted upon the rod 3 is a fiber disk 13 which when the rod falls strikes against the fiat contact 14 which is pivoted at 15 and forces it away from the adjustable contact 17. A spring 16 returns the contact plate 14 as indicated.
18 represents a non-magnetic rod screwed into the end of the plunger 2 and having a non-oxidizable metal ic end 19. 2O is a screw capable of making contact at 21 with said ro 18.
22 indicates a four pole double throw switch, 23 an X-ray tube, 24 a coil, 25 and 26 batteries, and 27 a ush button.
The operation o my invention is as follows z-The point 5 of the plunger 2 having been placed into one of the notches 4 in the rod 3, which corresponds to the period of time desired by the operator for the X-ray exposure, the lever 40 of the four ole double throw switch is thrown to the si e 28, when current will begin to ilow from one side of the battery 26 along wire 29, contact 30 of switch 22, contact 41 of said lever, wire 31, the coil of said magnet 1, wire 32, contact screw 17, contact plate 14, and along wire 33 back to the-battery 26. The current flowing through the coil of the magnet 1 energizes said magnet causing it to pull the plunger 2 in the direction of the arrow a ainst the tension'of the spring 6. The r 3 is accordingly released thereby leaving it free to fall, but retarded by the valve 9 which controls the air passing out of the nozzle 10. The movement of the plunger 2 also causes the non-oxidizable tips 19 and 21 to make contact, thus closing the circuit through the wire 45, primary 46, battery 25, wire 47, contact 48 of the screw 40, contact 49 ofthe switch 22, and vwire 50 joined to the said lever 20. The passage of current through the primary 46 induces current in the secondary coil 51 which current passes through the tube 23. An interruptor 52 of any suitable design may be employed to keep up these secondary currents as long as the contacts 19 and 21 are made, or instead of the battery 25 an alternator may be employed. When the piston 11 and rod 3 have fallen sufficiently to allow the disk 13 to enga e the contact 14 the battery circuit previous y described will become broken at the contacts 14 and 17, the magnet will become demagnetized and the spring 6 will return the plunger 2 to its former position, thereby reaking the Xray or primary circuit across points 19 and 21. l
Should it be desirable to use the X-ray apparatus independently ofl the timing device the switch 22 is thrown to the side marked 35 when the circuit through the battery 26 will become permanently broken. Current, however, will flow from the source of current 25 along the wire 47 to thel contact 48 of the lever 40, through the contact above described, and will permit current to" 38, along wire 39, along wire 45, through the primary 46 and back to the source 2.5. Interrupted currents flowing through this circuit will continue to generate secondary currents in the coil 51 so long as the contacts 38 and 48 are joined.
Should it be desired to operate the X-ray tube from a distance, the disk 13 being in its lowest position and therefore causing the circuit to be broken between the contacts 14 and 17, the push button 27 may be closed, whereupon current will flow from the battery 26 through said push button 27, through the contact 17, the wire 32, coil of magnet 1, wire 31, to the contact 41 of the lever 40, and this lever being thrownvover to the side marked 28 of the switch 22, current will flow from said contact 41 through the contact 30 and wire 29 back to the battery 26. Current thus flowing through the coil of magnet 1 will close contacts 19 and 21, as
flow from the source 25 through t-he wire 47, contacts 48'and 49, through the wire 50, contacts 19 and 21, wire 45, coil 46 and back to the source 25. Interrupted current now flowing through the coil 46 will induce secondary currents in the coil 5land through the X-ray tube 23.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosureexcept as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is l. In an X-ray apparatus the combination of a timing device; a magnet controlling said device; a pair of contacts adapted to be closed by said magnet; a circuit passing through the coils of said magnet controlled by said timing device; a circuit controlling the currents passing through the X-ray tube. controlled by said pair of contacts; and a switch adapted to control both of said circuits, substantially as described.
2. In an X-ray apparatus the combination of a timing dev1ce; means for regulating the period during which said device is active; a magnet controlling the operation of said means; a pair of contacts adapted to be closed by said magnet; a circuit passing through the coils of said magnet provi ed wit-h -a pair of contacts controlled by said timing device; a circuit cont-rolling the currents passing through the X-ray tube controlled by said first mentioned pair of contacts; means for causing varying currents to traverse said last mentioned circuit; and a switch adapted to control both of said circuits, substantially as described.
3. In an X-ray apparatus the combination of a timing device comprising a plunger adapted to fall under the influence of gravity; means to regulate the falling movement of said plunger; a solenoid provided with a reciprocating core adapted to control said plunger; a circuit in which said solenoid is included; a contact in said circuit adapted to be opened by the fall of said plunger; a second contact carried by said core; a second circuit passing through said second contact; and a switch lever controlling both of said circuits, substantially as described.

In an X-ray apparatus the combination of a timing device; means to regulate the period of operat-ion of said device; a. solenoid having a core controlling said device; a non-magnetic extension on said core carrying a contact; a circuit controlled by said timing device in which said solenoid is included; a second circuit in which said contact is included; an X-ray tube; a secondary coil for sending currents through said tube; a primary coil in said second cir-4 cuit; and means for controlling said circuits, substantially as described.
5. In an X-ray apparatus the combination of a timing device; a solenoid having a core controlling said device; a contact carried by said core; a circuit in which said solenoid is included; a second contact for controlling said circuit; a second circuit in which said rst mentioned contact is included; a switch controlling said second circuit; and means in said second circuit adapted to generate high tension currents, substantially as described.
