To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DE Von, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVestfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Transmitters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
'This invention relates to adjustable hang ers for power transmitters, intended primarily for use in coi'inection'with sewing machines for manufacturing. purposes, and 1t has for its object to provide a device in which the hanger and the power-transmitting elements carried thereby may bebodily moved relatively to the supportingbracket whenit is desired to tighten or slacken the driving belt connecting the power transmitter with the driving pulley of the motor or other power device.
In the present improvements, the power transmitter elements are carried by a hanger slidinglyconnected to a supporting bracket secured to the under face of the power-table which receives the machine to be driven by the transmission belt or belts. The hanger is provided with alined a-perturedbosses loosely fitted upon a shaft forming part of the bracket, and the hanger carries an elbowlever so arranged that one arm thereofcomprises a member of a toggle, its complemental toggle member being an arm pivotally connected to the said bracket shaft. Then the elbowor shifting-lever is thrown in a direction to break the toggle, the hanger is bodily moved to slacken the driving belt, and a reverse movement of the elbow-lever will restore the hanger to its normal position and thus tighten the belt. To prevent vibration or the pull of the belt from gradually acting upon the toggle to break the same during the action of the transmitter, the toggle is thrown slightly past its dead-center untila stop member prevents further movement of the shifting lever. Thus the transmitter'may be quickly thrown out of driving position to temporarily slacken the driving belt and thereby avoid any useless wear of the same and unnecessary expenditure of 7 power; and a quick movement of the shifting-lever will instantaneously return the transmitter to its predetermined driving position. determined by an adjustment eifected by loosening the set-screw which pivotally connects the toggle link with the bracket-shaft and thereafter moving the hanger and link upon said shaft until the proper position is reached, depending upon the tension under which the belt is to be driven. Thus the working position of the transmitter may be changed at will; and, after moving the shifting-lever to slacken the belt, a reverse movement of the lever will restore the hanger and the transmitter parts carried thereby to their exact predetermined working position.
To adapt the transmitter for driving heavy sewing machines and the like, its driven or transmission wheel is formed with two or more V-shaped grooves to receive round belts which engage the walls of similar grooves in the driven pulley of the machine. By this construction the driving pull upon the belts causes them to grip the pulleys with suflioient force to prevent slipping of the belts when the driving load is suddenly increasedas for example when the feeding elements of a sewing machine cross a heavy welted seam in overall work.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvements and Fig. '2 is a bottom plan view, partly in section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improvements.
The power transmitter comprises the usual driving pulleys 1 and 1*, and a transmission pulley 2, loosely mounted upon a shaft 3 clamped by set-screw 8 Within the lower one of two transversely-disposed bearing-apertures formed in the boss 1 of a hanger comprising the arms 5 and 6 and the intermediate transversely-disposed bosses 7 and 7. The upper aperture of boss 4: and the apertured boss 7 are arranged in alinement to receive a horizontal shaft 8 supported in the depending alined bosses at and b of a bracket A.
The boss 7 is apertured to receive a short rock-shaft 9 having clamped thereon at one end by means of set-screws 10 a starting lever 11 formed with the usual inclined pressure-controlling face 12 which engages the thimble 13 loosely fitted upon the reduced outer end 3 of the pulley-shaft 3. The starting lever acts through the intermediary of the thimble 13 and a suitable bearing device to move the driving pulley in contact with the conical friction face of the trans- 7 mission pulley. The upper portion of the bracket A is a flat-plate 19 apertured at 20 to receive the screwswhich secure the bracket to the under face of a power-table. Intermediate the plate 19 and the bosses at and Z) is a web which unites the bracket wings 21; and at the base of the plate and merging into these wings are two alined bosses 21 adapted to receive a guide-rod 22 which at one end is bent downwardly to fitwithin'a socket 6 formed in the vertical apertured arm 6 of the hanger, the rod being held in position by means of the set screw 23.
It will be seen that the arrangement above described permits the hanger and the transmitter members supported thereby to be bodily moved relatively to the bracket A and the power-table, the hanger sliding upon the supporting shaft 8 for this purpose and the guide-rod 22 serving to hold it in proper position throughout such movement.
A shifting lever 2 1 is employed to move the hanger relatively to its supporting bracket. The lever 24 is an elbow-lever and is fulcrumed by means of the fulcrum-stud 25 upon the boss 4 of the hanger and thus moves bodily with the hanger when it is thrown into and out of normal position. Thearm 24* of the shifting-lever forms one member of a toggle, the complemental toggle member being a link 26 pivotally connected by the pin 27 to arm 24: and at its opposite end pivoted by means of 'studscrew 28 to a sleeve 29 fitted upon the shaft 8 and normally held in fixed relation thereto by means of a clamping screw 80. It will beseen that movement of the lever 24 to the right from the position shown in Fig. 1 will break the toggle and swing link 26 to the right in an arc and, through the pivotal connection of the link with arm 2%, will carry the hanger to the right, the parts assuming the position shown in Fig. 3. 'A reverse movement of the shifting-lever 24 will restore the hanger and transmitter parts to their normal and driving positions.
When it is desired to change the normal driving position of the transmitter elements in order to tighten a belt or to loosen it if it becomes too tight through atmospheric changes, it is necessary merely to loosen the set-screw 30 and then shift the hanger and face of the arm 2430f the shifting lever will hold. the toggle in such position.

It will be understood that various changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements herein shownand described invention. "For example the form of the hanger may be modified and means other than the guide-rod 22 may beemployed to maintain the transmitter elements in proper relation to the supporting bracket.
Having thus set forth the natureof the invention, what I claim herein is 1.
