Be it known that I, WILLIAM X. STnyENs, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lntermittently-Bevolying Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to machines for assembling and nailing boxes, and more particularly to revolving mechanism whereby a head for carrying and as sembling the parts of said boxes may be given an intermittent rotary motion with a definite and rigidly fixed stop at each step. It may be used. however, for other purposes, as will be readily understood.
To this end, my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming intermittently revolving mechanism hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows a top view of revolving mechanism according to my invention, and Fig. 2 shows portions of the same in side view.
Numeral 3 represents that portion of the machine which is to be revolved and will be herein termed a revolver head. This head is journaled to rotate in the direction of the arrow 4, around a fixed shaft 5. It is actuated and stopped through its arms 6, which are preferably provided with antifriction rollers 7. A latch 8, pivoted on a pin 9, in a fixed bearing 10, is located in a line tangent the circle of revolution of the arms 6, to engage each arm as it arrives at the notch 11, thereby holding the head from turning. A lever 12, is pivoted at 13 to a fixture to oscillate in a plane parallel with the shaft 5.
A pawl 14, is pivoted at 15 to the lever 12, so that its path of oscillation intersects the circle or path of rotation of the arms 6. On its backward movement the pawl 14 drags under the latch and the arm 6 therein and is thereby tipped down until the pawl passes behind the arm 6, when it swings back as shown, by dotted lines 16, to its normal position. radial-with .the..lever 12.

moves forward, in the direction indicated by the arrow 20, it first comes in contact with the wedge-shaped under side of the latch 8, and lifts the latch from the arm 6, then engages the arm. thus freed, and carries it forward until the next arm, 6, reaches the latch and is caught and held thereby, thus giving one step of rotation to the revolver head 3. During the last half of its advance the pawl 14 is wedged outward by the gradually inclining arm 6, tending to force the lever 12, out of its normal plane of travel, so that the combination thus far described would not be reliable to revolve the head exactly the same distance at every step under varying-conditions of speed and resistance, therefore I shape the end of each arm 6, with a face 21, inclined to the line of radius and coincident with the adjacent side of the tangent path of the pawl 14. and I provide a fixed guide 22 at the opposite s de of, and parellel with the said path. The space between the guide 22 and the face 21, whenthe latter is at the end of a step, is exactly as wide as the thickness of the pawl 14, whereb the pawl 14 is forced to move each arm 6, exactly to the predetermined point which brings the next arm into engagement with the latch 8. Now the lever 12 and the pawl 14 might continue to move forward yet the arm will not be further acted upon at this step. This obviates any fail ure to complete each step of the revolving head which might otherwise result from wear and looseness of the machine parts.
This device does not require any special adjustment of parts to make them operate in harmony after the machine is once completed, because the pawl lifts the retaining latch out of engagement with the rotary arm at the very instant of engaging the same arm to rotate it. and it must carry that arm to the exact point where a step is completed and leave it held by the next arm which is to follow the same movement. The inclined face on the armwould tend to produce accuracy of stopping at fixed steps even without the aid of the opposite guide 22.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. Intermittently revolving mechanism comprising a rotary head having radial arms, a pivoted latch located tangent to the circle of revolution of the said arms to engage each arm at a fixed point in the circle, a lever pivoted to oscillate in a plane parallel with the axis of revolution of the said head, and a pawl pivotally hung upon the lever to travel in a path intersecting the plane of motion of the said arms, the pawl in its backward movement to be swung out of the path of the arms by contact with one of them and to swing in behind the said arm in passing it, substantially as set forth.
2. Inte'rmittently revolving mechanism comprising a rotary head having radial arms, a pivoted latch located tangent to the circle of revolution of the said arms to engage each arm at a fixed point in the circle, a lever pivoted to oscillate in a plane parallel with the axis of revolution of the said head, and a pawl pivotally hung upon the lever to travel in a path intersecting the plane of motion of the said arms, the pawl in its backward movement to be swung out of the path of the arms by contact with one of them and to swing in behind the said arm in passing it, substantially as set forth.
8. An intermittently revolving mechanism comprising a rotary head having radial arms, a latch hung to engage the said arms one at a time, an oscillating lever, a radially extending pawl pivoted to the end of said lever and intersecting the plane of said arms, said pawl being hung to swing out of its radial line and pass under one of said arms on the backward movement of said le ver and to resume its radial position when it has passed the said arm, substantially as set forth.
4. An intermittently revolving mechanism comprising a shaft, a head journaled to revolve upon said shaft and having radial arms, an oscillating lever mounted on an axis at right angles to the pivot of said head, a pawl pivoted on said lever. to reciprocate in a path across the path of said arms to revolve said head, and means engaging the arms for arresting the motion of the head at a fixed point, substantially as set forth.
5. An intermittently revolving mechanism comprising a head. mounted to revolve in a circle and provided with radial arms, an 05- cillating lever carrying a pawl mounted to swing at right angles to the plane of said head and to cross an arc of the said circle to engage one of the said arms and actuate said head. the arm which is being acted upon when at the end of its arc of motion having a face tangent to the path of the driving pawl, substantially as set forth.
6. An intermittently revolving mechanism comprising a head mounted to revolve in the are of a circle and provided with radial arms spaced around its periphery, an oscillating lever carrying a pawl mounted to travel in a path which crosses the arc of the travel of said arms and at right angles therewith, and a guide at the outer side of the said path to keep the pawl in its plane of work, substantially as shown and described.
7 An intermittently revolving mechanism comprising a shaft, a head journaled to revolve upon said shaft and having radially projecting arms, an oscillating lever pivoted upon a bearing at right angles to the axis of said head and adapted to swing on said bearing within the orbit of said head and between the radial arms thereof, a pawl pivoted on said oscillating lever and adapted to impinge one of said arms during its travel in one direction and yield oncontact with the following arm during its travel in the reverse direction, and means arranged with in the path of said arms for arresting the motion of said head at the termination of each oscillation of said oscillating lever, substantially as set forth.
8. An intermittently revolving mechanism comprising a shaft, a rotary head mounted upon said shaft and having radial arms,
means adapted to engage one of said arms for normally preventing rotation of said head, an oscillating lever pivoted to swing within the orbit of said head and between adjacent radial arms thereof, a pawl pivoted on said oscillatory lever adapted to release said engaging means and impinge the arm during its travel in one direction and yield on contact with the following arm during its travel in the reverse direction, substantially as set forth.
9. An intermittently revolving mechanism comprising a head mounted to rotate in a. horizontal plane and formed with radial arms, means adapted to engage one of said arms for normally preventing rotation of said head, an oscillatory lever pivoted to swing in a plane at right angles to travel of said head and arranged to free said engaging means from an arm of said head and impinge said arm for moving said head one step, substantially at set forth.
