IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE-HEADED AND POINTED DOWEL-BRADS.
Specification formingA part of Letters Patent No. 116,367, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN SOWLE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have inade a new and useful invention which I term a Double-Headed and Double-Pointed Bowel-Brad; and do hereby declare the saine to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, Oi' which- Figurel isaside elevation, Fig. 2, an edge view of it; and Fig. 3 is a view of it as made of wires.
The said head is intended for use in connecting a molding or a panel or other thing to another article or surface, it being of special advantage to cabinet-makers, joiners, and various other artisan s. It consists of two tapering or pointed brads or nails, a b, conjoined and arranged together, and to project in Opposite directions from one another, in manner Substantially as represented, so as to form the united brads with two brads or shoulders, c d, disposed relatively to each other and the brads, in manner. as-shown.
The article may be made from wire suitably bent, so as to form at or near the middle of it the two shoulders, arranged as shown, and such wire may be round Or cylindrical; or it may be prismatic in transverse section, and each brad, Or the shank thereof, may be pointed, and it may be cut from sheet metal by suitable machinery. It' desirable either or each of the sh anks may be barbed or formed with an arrow-headed point, or may be otherwise suitably barbed to cause it to hold to better advantage -in an article after having been driven therein. Such a point is shown at ein the drawing.
Generally speaking, a set or punch, formed with an orifice or socket in one end to receive one of the Shanks up to the head of the other, is to be employedv in setting the double-head into an article preparatory to the fixing thereto of the molding or panel or other thing which is to be ronnected by the brad by being forced upon that shank of it which may project from the article into which it may iirst be driven. I claim as a new or improved manufacture for the purpose described- The double-headed and double-pointed dowelbrad, made substantially as explained.
