NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,363, dated J une 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TAIT SNEDDEN, of J ohnstown,in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cartridge-Retractors for Breech-Loading Fire-Arms, being improvements upon and adapted to all other breech-loaders having a vibratory breech-block, of which the following is a specication The first part of my invention relates to the elongation of the slot or groove in the breechblock, so as to allow the cartridge-retractor to operate freely within it. The second part of my invention relates to the elongation of the lower part of the cartridge-retractor, so that said elongation shall extend beyond the breech-block, so that, by pressing it forward with the linger prior to the tilting of the breech-block to effect the cocking of the hammer, it is released from the cartridge, allowing the cartridge to remain in the barrel of the gun.

I claim as my invention- 1. The cartridge-extractor G, when 1:rovided with the elongation or arm R, whereby the hook or point of said extractor may be passed over the flange of the cartridge so as to leave. the same in the bore of the barrel when desired, as set forth.
2. The combination of the breech-block, when provided with the elongated slot or groove described, With the extractor Gr, as and for the purpose set forth.
