Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHILD- wACH'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walworth', in the county of Custer, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Rod Taps; and I do hereby declare vthe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to drill and pump rod taps. It is well known that ofttimes when a well is being drilled the drill rod breaks off at various distances below the sur-I face of the ground and an object of this invention is to facilitate the removal of the said broken portion of the drill rod remaining in the ground.
' A further object of the invention is to prepare the broken portion of the drill rodV for removal.
lVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as herein described and subsequently claimed.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a partial sectional view of my device in position to cut threads on the inside of a drill rod section. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig..1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawing byv reference characters, similar characters representing similar parts throughout the several views: 1 represents a casing in which the drill rod 2 is operated and 3v a broken section of the drill rod.
My invention comprises means for threading the inside of the broken section 3 and the preferred embodiment thereof includes a hollow cylindrical guide -1 arranged to be lowered in the casing 1 to inclose the drill rod Q. Fixedly secured to the upper end of the guide 4; by screws 6 passing through threaded holes 7 in the guide and threaded holes 8 in the colar member 9 is a downwardly extending honical cutting member l0. On this member 10 are formed cutters 11 and l1 for internally threading the broken drill rod section, and. on its lower end is formed a bit so that any obstruction which is met in the drill rod may be readily removed. Inasmuch as the drill rods are of various sizes I have seen fit to divide my cutting members 10 into two sections, an upper section 12 and a lower section 13. The lower section 13 is provided with four cutters 11 and the upper section'lQ is provided with live cutters 11; in fact I can Vary the number of these cutters as I see lit, the sole object being, where the diameter of the cutting member 10 is great and is used to thread a larger pipe than the portion of lesser diameter, to provide a great number of cutters so that it will not require so much power to operate as part of the friction is eliminated. On the upper end of the member 10 above the collar 9 is a threaded shank 14 and to' this shank is attached a rod l5 connected to suitable mechanism at its upper end to rotate the cutter member 10 and thus internally thread the broken drill rod section 3. q y
In operation when a drill rod has become broken below the surface of the ground the device is lowered in the casing l until the guide 4 encircles the broken section 3 and positions the guide 4t axially with respect to` the drill rod. Simultaneously the eutter member 10 is inserted in the broken section of the drill rod which engages the conical cutter member at such point as the diameter of the hole in the drill rod will permit. The cutter member 10 is then rotated by suitable mechanism and with it the 'guide 4 which latter member forces the former member to rotate concentrically with .the drill rod. This rotating action of the cutter member forms threads on the inside of the broken sectionl o'f the drill rod by virtue of the cutters 11 or 11. .After the inside of the broken section has been threaded the cutter member is rotated in the opposite direction and withdrawn from the said section and the entire device is lifted from the casing and the portion of the broken drill rod in the ground is ready to be raised.
lVhen it is necessary to thread a drill rod which is inclosed by a large casing I provide the lower end of the guide -1 with one or more collars detachably held to the guide by screws 17, it being understood that each collar extends out farther than the one on which it is mounted so that the member 10 may be centered in any size drill rod casing by the use of the appropriate number of. collars. y
From the foregoing it may be seen that I have provided means for threading a broken section of a drill rod internally so that the a guide member having collar portions ont" oneend-thereof, the lower ends of which vsame may be engaged by a member for raising it from the drilled hole.
