Be it known that I, MARCUS O. An'rHoNmf a citizen of the United States, and resident of Englewood, county of Bergen, Stateof New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Vile-Cutting Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
' This invention relates to improvements in machines for cutting off metallic wires or bars, and particularly wires composed of relatively soft metal such as used in staples, pin tickets, and like articles.
In machines heretofore constructed wire has usually been fed intermittently and held stationary during the action of the cutters. In such machines the operation of cutting the wire is relatively slow, due to the constant stopping and starting of the feeding mechanism, furthermore by reason of the Wearing of the gears which operate the feeding mechanism the wires being out are slightly advanced during the cutting'operation so that the same are buckled or bent thus making them unsuitable for manipulation in the subsequent staple forming device.
)ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a Wire cutting machine of increased speed in which. the Wire will be fed continuously at an unvarying rate of speed and without any tendency to cause buckling or bending of the cut-offportions of the wire.
I am aware that heretofore patents have been granted upon machines adapted to feed the Wire continuously between a pair of toothed rollers which pinch the wire ofi in predetermined lengths, but in such cases the ends of the several pieces of wire are V- shaped and are not squarely cut off.
Another object of the invention therefore is to provide means for severing the wire squarely across at right angles to its axis during the continuous feeding of the wire whereby the severed lengths of Wire will be cylindrical in form and adapted to be pointed properly for pin-tickets and like articles. by the improved process disclosed in my pending application N 0. 861,144, filed Sept. 10, 1914, for improvements in pin-tickets.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.
Specification of Letters Patent.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a preferred form of machine embodying is a vertical median longitudinal section of the same, Fig. 3 is 4 is a detail elevation of the rotary cutting wheel and, 11 1g. 5 is a detail elevation showing the preferred form of cutter, a portion of thecutting wheel being shown in section.
As llustrated herein the cutting mechanism 1s supported within a main frame which des rably is in the form of a rectangular casting having sides 1 and ends 2, the ends be ng desirably provided with flanges 3, having apertures '4: by which the same may be bolted to a supporting base. The ends 2 aredesirably provided with inwardly proectmg bosses 5 adapted to form journals for the. main driving shaft 6 which is proyided with the usual fast and loose pulleys I and 8. The frame 2 supports a bearing plate 9, preferably a casting, secured thereto by bolts 10, said plate 9 having depending bosses, 11, 12 and 13 forming journals respectlvely for the shafts 14, 15 and 16- of the cutting wheel 17, and wire feeding wheels 18, 19. i
The superior bearing plate 20 is'desirably secured above the plate 9 in parallelism therewith and spaced apart therefrom by studs 21 which are threaded at their lower ends and screwed into the bearing plate 9 while their upper ends are reduced and fit 1nto holes in the said plate 20 and have nuts 22 for locking them in place. Suitable cooperating feed rolls are journaled in the" main and superior bearing plates and adapted to cooperate with the driven guide rolls in the manner hereinafter to be described. The superior plate 20 is likewise provided with bosses 23 providing journals for the ends of the shafts 14:, 15, 16. he superior bearing plate 20 is also desirably provided with a series of connecting recesses 24, 25, 26, affording access to the wire feeding and cutting mechanism whereby the wire may be accessible to the operator. said recesses also serving to lighten the weight of the superior bearing plate 20.

plate gears 28, 29 and 30 being larger but likewise of equal diameter so that the cutting wheel 17 will be driven' at the same rate of speed as the feeding rolls 18 and 19.
The cutting wheel 17 is desirably in the form of a grooved disk which may be of cast or drop forged iron, and the cutters, which are in-the form of shears as will hereinafter be more fully described, are set in preferably radial recesses 31 in the periphery of said disk. As illustrated herein ten recesses'are provided with a corresponding number of sets of cutters. The cutters desirably comprise fixed blades 32 having laterally extending flanges 33 by means of which they are secured to the face of the cutting wheel 17 by screws 34 or other suitable fasteners, and movable blades which preferably are substantially L-shaped in form, one arm 35 having a sharp cutting edge 36 and the other arm 37 providing means by which the cutter may be actuated. In order that the cutters may be assembled in the disk easily the movable cutter is pivotally mounted upon a which is anchored in the stationary cutter blade 32 as illustrated in Fig. 4.
In order to provide means for directing the wire between the cutting blades I have provided an L-shaped guide 40, the base 41 of which is secured to the plate 9 by suitable fastenings 42 and rising therefrom presents a relatively long guiding extension 43 adjacent the path of the wire, and extending within the groove 44 of the periphery of the cutting wheel 17 so that the wire is directed positively-to the cutters and is maintained in proper position by the sides of the groove 44 and the guiding edge 43.
The movable cutter desirably may be actuated by a lever 45 pivotally mounted upon a stud or screw 46 supported by a depending bracket, or stand 4 One end of the lever 45 extends above the surface of the plate 9 sufficiently to be actuated to engage the arm 37 of the movable cutter, the other arm of the lever being desirably provided with a rounded end 48 adapted to be engaged by a cam 49 fixedly secured upona countershaft 50 which may be journaled in brackets 51, 52 depending from the bearing 9. The shaft 50 is provided with a gear 53 which meshes with a companion gear 54 upon the main shaft, the ratio of the gearing between the shaft 50 and the shafts 14, 15 and 16 being such that the shaft 50 makes ten revolutions to every revolution of the shafts 14, 15 and 16.

This action is instantaneous and does not impede in any way the rotation of the cutting wheel 17 so that the feeding forward of the wire proceeds continuously.
vThe positively driven feeding rolls 18 and 19 are provided with coiiperating idle feeding rolls 55, 56 which are journaled in suitable boxes 57, 58 mounted in ways 59, 60 in the superior bearing plate and similar boxes mounted in like ways in the main bearing plate, (see Figs. 1 and 3). Cross heads 61 are desirably mounted in the ways aforesaid above the journal boxes 57 and adjusting screws 62 passing through plates 63 secured to the main and superior bearing plates respectively press against the cross heads 61 and provide means for adjusting the position of the coiiperating feeding rolls in respect to the main or driven feeding rolls. It is necessary that these cooperating feeding rolls engage the wire su ciently to aid in advancing the wire, but that they shall not press against the wire with sufficient force to flatten the same or distort it in any way. I have therefore provided springs 64 seated in suitable recesses in the main and superior bearing plates which are adapted to engage the ournal boxes'57, 58
andxsupport the weight thereof away from I the main driven rolls so that the pressure upon the cotiperatin feeding rolls may be adjusted to a nicety y the screws 62.
It is of course desirable that the wire which is delivered to the feeding rolls should be in a perfectly straight condition and to accomplish this end the machine may be provided with the usual series of wire straightening devices as illustrated herein,
and may consist of a series of pairs of rolls 65 and a series of pairs of rolls 66 disposed at right angles thereto, said rolls being supported in a, suitable frame 67 and provided with adjusting screws 68. The support 67 may conveniently be attached to the superior bearing plate by suitable screws 69 or other fastenings as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In order to support the coil of wire being cut I have provided a standard 70 in which a suitable shaft may be mounted for the spool. The standard is preferably secured in the superior bearing plate intermediate of the pairs of feeding rollers by bolts 71 as illustrated inFigs. 1 and 2. This bearing may also be used ifedesired as a support for other mechanisms used in connection with the wire cutting device.
It is to be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is one of the preferred forms of the invention and that the same may be incorporated in other mechanisms within the meaning and the scope of the claims hereto annexed.
Having thus described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths, comprising means for feeding a wire continuously, a cutter, means for moving said cutter continuously in the direction of feed of said wire, and means for actuating said cutter intermittently to out the wire during its uninterrupted progperiphery thereof, means for and a cooperating feeding the wire .ress in a plane at right angles to its direction of movement without bending or buckling the wire.
2. A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths, comprising means for feeding wire continuously, in combination with a rotatable cutting mechanism including a reciprocating cutter having the same peripheral speed as that of the wire, and means for intermittently actuating the said cutter to sever the wire in a plane at right angles to its direction of movement.
3 A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths, comprising means for feeding the wire continuously, in combination with a rotatable cutting tool having radially disposed shears mounted in the periphery thereof, and means for actuating said shears to sever the wire during the uninterrupted progress thereof.
4:. A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths, comprising means. for feeding the wire continuously, in combination with a rotatable cutting wheel having a radially disposed stationary shearing blade pivotally movable shearing blade mounted in the periphery thereof, and means for actuatin said movable blade to sever the wire during its uninterrupted progress.
5. A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths, comprising means for continuously, in combination with a grooved cutting wheel having radially disposed shears mounted within the guiding and for maintaining the wire within said groove,
and means for actuating said shears to sever the wire during its uninterrupted progress.
6. A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths, comprising means for feeding the wire continuously, a rotatable cutting Wheel having a radially disposed stationary shearing blade and a cooperatin pivota 1y movable shearing blade mounted within the ating the said movable blade comprising a lever disposed adjacent to the path of the arm of said movable cutting blade, and means for actuating said lever same to impinge upon the arm of said movab e cutting blade when said blade is in position at right angles to the path of the wire, whereby the wire will be severed at right angles to its direction of movement without bending or buckling the same.

A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths, comprising means for feeding the wire continuously, a rotatable cutting wheel having a radially disposed stationary shearing blade and a cooperating movable shearing blade having a laterally extending arm.mounted within the periphery thereof, means for-actuating the said movable blade comprising a lever disposed adjacent to the path of the arm of said movable cutting blade, a cam foractuating said lever to cause the same to impinge upon the arm of said movable cutting blade when said blade is in position at right angles to the path of the wire, whereby wire will be severed at right angles to ment without bending or buckling the same.
8-. A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths comprising means for feeding the wire continuously in combination with a rotatable cutting wheel having a plurality of radially disposed shears mounted in the periphery thereof, and means for actuating said shears to sever the wire during the uninterrupted progress thereof.
9. A machine for severing wire in predetermined lengths, comprising a main shaft, a pair of feed rolls and a cutting wheel provided with a plurality of radially disposed shears, cooperating gears on said main shaft and upon the shafts of one of the feeding rolls and the cutting roll adapted to drive said feed rolls and said cutting roll at the same peripheral speed, a countershaft, co-
