zen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosive Shells; and I do declare the following to be a full, clean and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in.

The front plate 8 of the projectile 5 has an exploding cap 10 mounted therein and arranged in front of this cap carrying plate 8 is a lon itudinally extending member 11 having a core 12 in the center thereof to permit the insertion of a pin 13 carried by a soft metal cap 14, said pin being preferably soldered in said cap and here shown pro vided with a head. 15 mounted in the cap and held by the solder therein. The walls of the casing 6 preferably converge toward their free ends and are externally threaded as shown at 16 to receive the threaded cap 14 which when engaged therewith, will cause the free end ofits pin 13 to be disposed adjacent to the cap 10 but spaced therefrom a. suilicient distance to render the explosive perfectly safe for storing" and transportation and which only becomes dangerous when the metal cap forcibly engages some object such as would exert sufficient pressure to force said cap rearwardly a sufficient distance to engage the pin 13 with the exploding cap 10.
The casino 6 of the projectile 5 is filled with an explosive preferably smokeless powder 1 and has embedded therein 1nultiplicity of jagged pieces 17 of steel or other hard material.
The steel jacket or easing 1 is also filled with an explosive material preferably smokeless powder as shown at F.
From the above description, it will be ob YlOlIS that when sufiicient force is brought to bear on the exploding cap 2 such is caused by the firing of a gun the po der 1 in the shell 1 will be exploded and thereby drive out the telescopially engaged projectile 5 mounted in the front end thereof and the tapered rapped end of this member on coming into contact with the object toward which it is directed will have said cap sulliciently flattened, owing to its soft formation so as to cause the pin 13 to be driven inwardly against the exploding: cap 10 and thereby explode the powder P in the casing (l oi said member 5, it being obvious thatu gitudinal open and allowing the pieces 17 to penetrate the beforementionedobject. I I claim as my invention:
1. An explosive of the class described comprising a tubular casing closed at its opposite ends and filled with an explosive, an exploding cap in one of said closures, a forwardly tapering chamber encircling said cap carryin closure and arranged in lonalinement with said casing, said chamber having its outer end threaded, a soft metal cap having threaded engagement with said chamber, said cap tapering toward its free endand having a pin mounted therein and, extending longitudinally rearward With its free end positioned adjacent the explosive cap of said closure when the parts are assembled, and a longitudinally extending member arranged in said chamber, the former having a bore for insertion of said pin whereby toprovide a guide for the same.
2. An explosiveof the class described comprising a tubular casing, a pair of disks closing theopposite ends of said casing, rods secured to said disks for holding them in connected relation, said casing being filled with an explosive having jagged elements embedded therein, an exploding cap in one of said disks, a forwardly tapering chamber arranged in longitudinal alinement with said pm mounted therein and extending longitudinally rearward with its free end positioned adjacent said explosive cap when the parts are assembled.
