To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. KAHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in `Wire Cutting and Counting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for measuring, cutting and counting pieces of wire, and the same is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section drawn on line .v0-m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. et is a transverse vertical section drawn on line `t/-g/ of Fig. 1.

l is a supporting platform, and 2 is a pair of cutting pincers of ordinary construction" and the same is securely attached to one end 0f the platform 1 by the bolt 3 and staple.
3, which bolt passes through an aperture provided therefor' in one of the handles 4 and from thence through an aperture provided therefor in the platform 1, as indicated by dotted lines 5.
6 is a guide through which the wire is led to the cutting blades 7, as it is being cut. The guide 6 may be made of a flexible wire 8, which wire may be bent so as to bring the wire which is being cut at different points along the edge of the cutting blades 7. The handle 9 is connected with the handle l by the pivoted bolt 10 in the ordinary manner, and in cutting the wire the handle 9 is raised and lowered.
11 is an adjustable gage which is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally of the platform 1 when it is secured in place by turning down the eye-bolt 12 in the flanged nut 13. llhe flanged nut 13 is secured to the under side of the platform by screws le, 14 or in any convenient manner, whereby the gage 11 is securely retained at any point of adjustment along the platform 1 corresponding with the length of the slot 15, the slot 15 being formed for the reception of the eyebolt 12 and for the two vertical pins 16, 16, which serve to hold the horizontal member 17 of said gage in place. The platform 1 is preferably provided with a scale 19, which scale indicates the proper points of adjust- Specification of Letters Patent.

Connected with the upper handle 9 is a resilient wire 20 which is adapted to be raised and lowered with each upward and downward movement of said handle, and motion is communicated from said handle through said resilient wire to one or more registering cylinders 21, 22 and 23 `of the counting mechanism shown in Figs. l, 2 and 4, whereby with each downward movement of the handle 9 the cylinder 21 is revolved one notch. It will be understood that the member 20 is adapted to engage one of the teeth 24 with each upward movement/of said handle, whereby with the downward movement of said handle said cylinder 21 is revolved a distance corresponding with the distance between said teeth 24. The cylinder 2l is provided with a radial pin 25 which is adapted with each revolution of said cylinder 21H to be brought in contact with one of the teeth 26 of the cylinder 22, whereby when the cylinder 21 has revolved one complete revolution said cylinder 22 will be caused to move a distance corresponding with the distance between said teeth 26. The cylinder 22 is provided with a. radial pin 27 and said radial pin is adapted with each complete revolution of the cylinder 22 to contact with one of the teeth 28 of the cylinder 23, whereby with each revolution of the cylinder 22 said cylinder 23 will be revolved a distance corresponding with the distance between said teeth 28. Each of the cylinders 21, 22 and 23 is provided with numerals to indicate the number of pieces of wire that have been out with the downward movement of said handle 9. Thus it will be understood that the cylinder 21 is provided with numerals from 1 to l0, while the cylinder 22 is provided with numerals from 10 to 100 and the cylinder 23 is provided with numerals from 100 to 1000, whereby it is 0bvious that a perfect record will be made on said cylinders of the number of pieces of wire cut from 1 to 1000. It will, of course, be understood that additional cylinders and numerals, may in like manner, be added to the series, whereby a correct record of the number of wires cut may be increased. Fig. 1 shows a record of 129 and it will now be understood that with the next downward stroke of the handle 9 the record will be changed to read 130 while 9 will be substituted by the character 0. l am aware of the fact that wire cutting pincers have previously beenmade and also that counting machines have previously been made but l believe that I am the first to combine the cutting pincers, platform, adjustable gage, and1 counting mechanism in such a manner that with each downward movement of one ofthe handlesa piece of wire, of a given length, will be out and a record thereof made-upon thccounting machine, substantially asdescribed.

In a device of the described class, the combination of a platform, a slidable gage secured to said platform, a scale indicating the proper place of adjustment of said gage, means for holding said gage at any desired point of adjustment on said platform, a pair ofA cutting pincers securedv to said platform, said pincers being adapted with each downward movement of one of the operating handles to sever a `piece of wire of a predetermined length from a supply to be cut, a guide for supporting the wire to be cut as it is led to the cutting blades of said pincers, a series of counting cylinders,a wire for connecting one of the handles of said cutting pincers with one of said counting cylinders, and means for communicating motionfrom one of said cylinders to another.
