Be it known that I, OTTO VVIEDEKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Tube-Cutters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makev and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tube cutters and particularly to the driving and controlling means thereof. n
The object of the invention is to provide a driving and controlling means through the aid of which a manually operated tube cutter may be driven from a motor or other source of power.
To the above end the device is simple in construction and efficient in operation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a tube cutter with my invention attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a section approximately o-n the line 3*?5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the parts in a different position; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 isa plan view of one of the releasable nut sections and'Fig. 8' is a plan viewI ofthe supporting shaft of the attachment.
In the specification and drawings, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
Referringmore particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a tube sheet of a boiler which receives a boiler tube 2. The tube 2 extends past the tube sheet 1 to a greater eX- tent than is necessary to bead the end of the tube in the sheet. This extended portion of the tube is cut off by the following means: Adapted to be inserted within the tube is a hollow frame 3 which receives a carrier 4; provided with a roller cutter 5. The frame 3 also is provided with a carrier 6 which receives rollers 7. The carriers 4 and 6 are adapted to be pressed outwardly by a wedgeshaped actuator 8 mountedwithin the frame Specification of Letters Patent.

V'hen the actuator 8 is moved longitudinally and the frame 3 isrotated, the cutter 5 is pressed into the inner side ofthe tube 2 thereby cutting off the end of the tube andbeveling the same preparatoryto beading the end of the tubein the tube sheet 1. The position of the cutter 5 relative to the tube sheet is regulated by an adjustable guard 9' which is adapted to 'slide' on the frame 3. The actuator 8 is attachedto a rod 10 by means of which' it is moved. Y
The abo-ve described device forms one well known type of tube cutter which, as far as my attachmentis concerned, may be of any ofthe well known types. p
The above tube cutter is machine-driven through the aid off my attachment as follows: hollow shaft 12, provided with-a squared end 13 to which a motor or other suitable driving means may be attached, is adapted to `be attached tothe frame 3 by means of a screw lland lugs 11.- When the shaft 12 is rotated, the frame 3 is also rotated and, during the time of the rotation of theA shaftl2 and frame V3, the cutter 5 is moved outwardly'automatically by the following means: Attached to the-end of the rodlO-is anextension 14; provided with a race 15 which receives the ends of screws or pinsv 16; Said screws or pins 16 extend through slots and are mounted in a collar lifslidingly mountedonthe shaft 12. The collar 17 is moved along the shaft 12 to move the cutter 5 outward-ly by the following means: The said collar-17 isprovided with an anti-friction bearing-18 which's inen-` gagement with a spacing collar 19l mounted on the shaft 12.- The saidspacing colla-r 19 is in direct engagement withtwo split nut portions 20 also mounted on the sli-aft 12. These split nut portions are provided-with ears 21 provided with pins 22 which Apermit t-he nut'portions to open and close. The said n ut portions 20 are opened by pins V23 which ride or pressl against thev shaft 12.- The pins 23 are mounted in pockets 211 and are under the control ofsprings 25. The nutportions 20` are provided with screw-threads 26 adapted to be placed-in and out of engagement with screw-threads 27 on the shaft/12. The screw-.threads26 are disengaged from the screw-threads 27 by the springs 25 and pins 23, but are placed in engagement by the following means: One of the nut portions 2O is provided with a cam 28, while the other portion is provided witl'ra boss'29. The said v boss receives a pivot pin 30 on the end'of a hand lever 31 which is provided with an adjustable pin 32 adapted to engage a cam 28. When the pin 32 is in the position shown in the drawings, the said pin and cam 28 have placed-'the threads Vr26 in engagementwith the threads 27 It will be seen that when the parts are in this position, the shaft 12 is rotated and the nut portions 20 are held stationary by holdingthe lever 31 in the hand,
released by shifting the lever 31 which allows the springs to disengage the threads 26 from the threads 27. l/Vhen this operation takes place, the nut portions 2O are moved toa normalrposition and the cutter is released by a spring 33 which maybe mounted within the shaft 12 but which, inthe present instance, lies between the 'collar 17 and a collar Bet mounted on the shaft 12. During Vthe return of the nut portions 20 toa normal position, the threads 26 are held outof engagement with the threads 27, by the pins 23 and springs 24.1 f Y e The shaft 12, inthe present instance, is shown and described as an extension of the frameV 3 but it willibe understood that the tool in its entiretymay be constructed with the shaft 12 as an integral portion of the frame 3. Also, thev shaft 12 may be attached to the frame 3 by the aid of an extension,
not shown, to permit thetool to be used in connection with the heads of water tube boilers.
In operating thetool, the operator will nsert the frame 3 within the `end of the tube until the guard 9 comes in contact with the tube sheet 1. The nut portions 20 are then contracted by shifting the hand lever 31 which places the threads 26 in engagement with the threads 27. The nut portions 2O are then held stationarylby holding the lever ljin'th'e hand and thetool is then rotated by starting the motor or other driving means. When the shaft 12 rotates relative to the nut portions 20, said nut portions will slide 'along the shaft 12 against the tension of the spring 33 thereby moving the cutter 5 outwardly. When thev cutting operation has been completed, the cutter 5 is released'and the parts are returned to a normal position by a spring 33, by shifting the lever 31 which disengages the pin 32 from the cam 28.
. Having described my invention, I claim- 1. ln a device of the type specified, a r otating member, cutting means mounted in said rotating member having screw threads,
w i split nut,membersoperatively connected to said cutting means, means for placing said nut members in engagement with said screwthreads, including a cam on one of said nut members and a lever, and a means adapted to return said nut members to a normal position and tol release said cutting means.
2. In a device of the type specified, rotating means, cutting means mounted in said rotating means having screw threads, split nut members adapted to be placed in engagement with said screw-threads, means for disengaging said nut members from said screw-threads, a cam on one of said nut members, and a lever in operative relation with said cam and adapted to place said nut members in engagement with said screwthreads. said nut members being operatively connected to said cutting means.
In a tube cutter, rotating means having screw threads, cutting means mounted in said rotating means, a sectional nut adapted to be placed in engagement with said screwthreads, means for disengaging said nut sections froin said screw-threads, a cam on one of said nut sections, a. lever in operative rclation with said cam and adapted to place said nut sections in engagement with said' screw-threads, said nut sections being operatively connected to said cutting means, and a spring adapted to return said nut sections to a normal position and to release said cutting means.
4. In a tube cutter, rotating means having screw threads, cutting means moimted in said rotating means, a divided nut adapted to be placed in engagement with said screwthreads, one portion of said nut being provided with a cam, spring-pressed pins mounted in said divided nut and adapted to disengage said divided nut from said screwthreads, a lever in operative relation with said cam on one of the nut portions and pivoted to the other of said nut portions and adapted to place said nut portions in engagement with said screw-threads, connections between said nut portions and said cutting means, and a spring adapted to return said nut portions to a normal position and to release said cutting means.

In a tube cutter, a rotating member having screw threads, a cutting member mounted in said rotating member, a twopart nut mounted on said rotating member and adapted to be placed in engagement with said screw-threads, spring-pressed pins mounted in said two-part nut and adapted to disengage said nut portions from said screw-threads, a cam mounted on one of said uut portions, a lever pivoted to the other of said nut portions, said lever being in operative relation with said cam and adapted to place said nut portions in engagement with said screw-threads, a collar slidably mounted on said rotating means and adapted to be actuated by said two-part nut and operatively connected with said cutting means,
and a spring adapted to actuate said collar to return said nut portions to a normal position and to release said cutting means.

In a tube cutter, a rotating member having screw threads, a cutting member mounted in said rotating member, a twopart nut adapted to be placed in engagement with said screw-threads and one of which is provided with a cam, springpressed pins mounted in said nut portions and adapted to disengage said nut portions from said screw-threads, a lever pivoted to one of said nut portions, an adjustable pin carried by said lever in operative relation with said cam and adapted to place said nut portions in engagement with said screw-threads, a shiftable collar provided with an anti-iric tion bearing and adapted to be actuated by said two-part nut, pins mounted in said shiftable collar, a rod provided with a race which receives said pins and connected to said cutting member, and a spring being adapted to actuate said shiftable collar to move said nut portions to a normal position and to release said cutting member.
7 In a tube cutter, a rotating frame, cutting means mounted in said frame, a shaft attached to said frame, said shaft being hollow and provided with longitudinal slots and screw-threads, a two-part nut adapted to be placed in engagement with said threads and one part of which has a cam, springpressed pins mounted in said two-part nut and adapted to disengage said nut from said threads, a lever pivoted to the other part of said nut portions in operative relation with said cam and adapted to place said nut in engagement with said threads, a shiftable collar mounted on said shaft, pins mounted in said collar and extending through said slots, a rod provided with a race which receives said pins, a spacing` collar mounted between said shiftable collar and the nut portions, and a spring adapted to actuate said shiftable collar to return said nut portions to a normal position and to release said cutting means.

In a tube cutter., a rotatable frame, cutting mea-ns mounted in said rotating frame, a shaft forming an extension of said frame having screw-threads, a split nut one portion of which has a cam, said nut being adapted to be placed in engagement with said screw-threads, springpressed p pins mounted in said nut and adapted to disen gage said nut portions from said screwthreads, a lever pivoted to one of said nut portions, an adjustable Pin mounted on said lever in operative relation with the cam o-n the nut portion and adapted to place said nut portions in engagement with said screwthreads, said shaft being hollow and provided with longitudinal slots, a shiftable collar having' anti-friction bearings mounted on said shaft, pins mounted in said collar and extending thro-ugh said slots, a rod provided with a race which receives said pins, a spacing collar mounted o-n said shaft between said anti-friction bearings and said nut portions, and a spring adapted to actuate said shiitable collar to return said nut portions to a normal position and to release said cutting means.
