, ASSIGNORS T0 THE FIRM OF DAIMLER-MGTORENfGESELLSCHAFT, OF UNTERTRK- HEIM, GERMANY.
THRoTTLn-VALVE p Foa cAnBUaETERs. ,i y f Application filed January 14, 1915.
To 4all whom/tracy concern:
Be it known that we, PAUL DAIMLER, a
subject of the King of Wurttemberg, residing at Cannstatt, Wurt-temberg, Germany, and RUDOLF SLaBY, a subject of the King ofPrussia, residing at Stuttgart, Wurttemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in yThiottle-Valves for Carbureters, of which the followingisa for carburetersof internal combustion As is well known,th'e composition of the mixture of gasoleneor petrol and air introduced .into the cylinders of' combustion motors should be the same at all times, no,-
matter what speed. the motor is running at.
Now, in the carbureters of the sprayer type the admission of petrol is dependent upon the suction power'of the motor. When .the
speed is increased, by altering the section of the admission duct to the mixing chamf ber the suction power at the main air nozzle of the carburetery is increased also, and'more air is drawn Iinto the carbureter than before. However,` the petrol Vwill not be able from the beginning to flow through its nozzle with an equally increased speed, and in consequence thereof, wheneverl thesection of said duct is increased, an excess of air will at first be drawn into the motor and the carbureter will` require some time to reestablish the proper proportions'of fiuid fuel 'and air in the mixture, the petrol being muchj slower than air with regard to acceleration of flow.l Therefore the supplementary air valves,y
which are usually opened together with Athe suction valve, must be arranged .in such a manner' as to" allowv the motor during accelerationl to draw in a quantity ofair just sufficienttoprevent it fromstopping. `Such a quantity of air, however, does not suiee, especially when the carburebr is only half open, for a satisfactory mixture at constant speed, as soon .as the speed of inflow of the petrol has been increased in accordance with the increasef'in speed ofthe air, and
therefor the carburetor will in such a case receive too little air and too much petrol.
According tov our invention these drawbacks are avoided by providing the throttle' Valve imentary air valve g will cause the air within Specification of Letters Patent.
sage tothe mixing chamber with vthe throttle moves.
- rat-enten Nov. 3o, i915; Serial No. 2,292.
controlling the section of the admission pasa supplementary air valve, the connection between the two valves being Aan elastic one, so that,
whenever the section of said passage is suddenly increased, fthe^ supplementary air mission openingsA will at first be closed' more or less `by 'the supplementary air valve.
vTherefore lwhile the' amount of mixture drawn intothe mixing chamber is increased, as well as the amount of air drawn through the primary air inlet, the amount of-air admitted through tlieauxiliary airinlet is reduced., Later'On the supplementary air valve will, yunder thevac'tion of a spring or' the like, automatically reopen the said open-v ings, the position of the throttle Valve notgV` being influenced thereby.
n The drawingsannexedto this`specification show the preferred form of a carbureter according to ,i our invention.
' is the throttle valve, a. is'a rod c'ontrolv ling saidfvalve,
andQc is a cylinder arranged within the valve and communicating withthe outer air through a narrow bore (Z in rod e. A cylinder f surrounding rod a; is arranged piston-like'within the cylinder 0,?A the supplementary air valve g fastened to cylinder f isfheldi'by a' spring h inthe posi- 1tion`shown inxthe drawing, the supplementary' air admission openings z' being open. One end of the spring 'abuts against a plate fm, integral with the 'casing in which The whole throttle mechanism is surrounded by a jacket n pro-v vided with a lsuitable inlet, not shown, `for the main air supply.
TWhenever, in order to run the motorA at an increased speed, the throttle valve b if'yilisplaced in the direction of the arrow, the air within the cylinder c is compressed, but owing to theredueed section of bore al it can- `not escape freely and therefore the piston f is displaced also. At the saine time they supplementary 'air 'valve Lg compressing spring 71, yis displaced toward the left and the openings z' are closed. In consequence thereof, whenever an vacceleration ofthe motor is effected, nothing but main air is admitted at first into the mixing chamber '75, thereby producing an acceleration of the flow ofl petrol through the nozzle. After the cylinder c has come to rest, the compressed spring L in acting upon the supplethe cylinder c to beexpelled through the` bore d. The supplementary air valve g will then return to its initial position and the openings z' will reopen and admit-supplementary air. Y A
1. In acarbureter of the sprayer type for internal combustion motors, in combination, a throttlen valve, a supplementary air valve, means controlled by the 'throttle valve and connected With said supplementary air valve for temporarily stopping the admission of supplementary air, and means for automativalve.
cally restarting the admission of supplementary air.
' 2. 'In a carbureter of the sprayer type for internal combustion motor in combination, a. throttle valve, a Cylinder closed atene end Within saidvalve, a. piston adapted to reciprocate Within said cylinder, a supplementary air valve connected with said piston and a spring adapted to drivesa'id piston .into said" cylinder and to open the supplementary air Copies o1' this patent may be obtained for the sprayer type having primary and auxiliary air inlets and a throttle valve controlling the area of the mixture passage there-A of, ,of means whereby the area of the auXil iary air inlet Will be temporarily reduced Aau tomatically when the throttle valve is suddenly adjusted to increase the area of the mixture passage, for the purpose described.
5. The combination with a carbureter of Vthe sprayer -type having primary and auxiliary air inlets and a'throttle valve controlling the area' of the mixture passagethere-` of, of means, for automatically closing the auxiliary air inlet when the throttle valve is suddenly adjusted to increase lthe area of the mixture passage, said'kauxiliary air inlet being again' opened automatically independent of any movement of the throttle valve, lfor the purpose described.
6. The combination with a carbureter of thesprayer type having primary and auxiliary air inlets and a throttle valvecontrolling tlie area of the mixture passage thereof, ofa valve for the auxiliary air inlet, and
means wherebyy wlfen the throttle valve is suddenly opened the valve for the auxiliaryl air inlet will be automatically adjusted to reduce the area of said air inlet, said air valve being automatically opened independ ent of any change in the position of the throttle valve, for the purpose described.
