OTTO PETERMANN, OF GROTON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CORONA TYPEWRITER COMPANY, INCORPORATED.. A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK. i
TYPE-WRITINO MCHINE.
Original application filed August 26, 1913, Seria! No.- 786,693. Divided and this 1914. Serial No. 839,673.
T all whom t 'may concern.' y
Be. it known that 1, OTTO PETERMANN, a citizen of the Republiciof Switzerland, and a resident of Groton, county of Tompkins, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in-Type- Writing Machines, of which the following is a' full, clear, and exact description. Y
This invention relates more particularly to carriage stops for visible or front-st ke typewriting machines and is a divisio of my pending application, Serial No. 786,693, filed August 26, 1913.
One of the principal objects of the invenl5 Y tion is to provide'simple and eiiicient means whereby a plurality of stops or devices may be adjustably supported at the rear of the carriage so as to move therewith and which are adapted to engage a part or parts Aof theV ;.inwhine not movable with the carriage so that the carriage may be stopped at dierent points in its backward travel according to the position of said stops.
Another object of the invention is to pro- V vide a simple and efficient stop for typewriter carriages which is adapted to be vmade substantially entirely of sheet metal, as steel, and which is adapted to positively limit the movement of the carriage.
A further object of the invention is to provideffsimple and eiiicie'nt means whereby a plurality of stops may be mounted to rock on the carriage in such a way that the carriage after being stopped may be permitted to have a further movement when the stops are released.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accom- 40 panyin'g drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out l in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the upper part of one form of typewriting machine showing the carriage and carriage bed with the inventlonapphed thereto. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of` the carriage. Fig. is a plan `View of the device or stopwith a part of its supporting bar. i 4 is a detail perspective view of one of it stops showing how it is held to Specification of Letters Patent. l
rat-enten Nov. so, 1915. application ined May 1s,
its supporting bar; and F ig. 5 is a detail i perspective view showing a slightly differ! 13 of the carriage frame and on the outer end of the platen shaft is a knob or button 14 by which the platen may be rotated, there -being the usual or any preferred formy of line-spacing mechanism provided to rotate the platen as it is usua`l in typewriting machines.
A support or bar 15, which may be squareI 1n cross-section, extends lengthwise of thev carriage and has its ends pivotally held in the ends 13of the carriage frame. At one end of the supporting bar 15 is a finger lever 16 which is held to said bar and has a key 17 at its forward end to adapt sai'dwlever to be depressed to rock the bar 15 on itsl pivot.- 'Y
The lever 16 has a part 18 extending rearward which is provided with an angular end 19, the said end being adapted normally to rest against the rear edge of one of the carriage frame nds 13. This lei'er 1G as well as the bar l5 is yieldingly held in its normal position by a spring 20, one end of which spring is held to the bar 15 and the other end to the carriage frame, said spring tending normally to force the end 19 of the lever 16 into engagement with the carriage frame. y i
The supporting bar 15 has a plurality of stops or devices 21, 22 and 23 mounted thereon. These stops are exactly the same in construction except that the stop 22 is Somewhat shorter than the other stops, and while only three stops are shown, there may be any desired number or only one may be employed if preferred. These stops or devices may be variously constructed. As `Shown, cach stop comprises two members 2l and The locking member 2t is provided .with a head 26 and the guiding mendaci' 25 is provided with a head Q7. These members are made of fiat sheet metal,l as' steel. formfd by dies or otherwise and the heads 213 and ZT are each substantially U-shapcd in plan. who
.head ci one member fitting within tbc other pso member in such a way as to permit, relative movement. The head 27 may be'called the guiding head for the device and 26 lthe locking head. The bar '115 has apluralty of vertically extending slots 28 which are' spaced apart, and' adapted to engage said slots is a dog or tooth 29 of the head 26.l The guiding head 27 is provided with openings through the side plates or walls 30 of substantially the same size and shape as the bar 15 in order that the entire device may be properly guided along the bar 15, while the head 25 has an'opening longer than the bar 15 on the wall or side 3l only. The side or wall 32 ofthe head 26 is relatively shorter thanthe 'side 31 and permits said head 26 to span the head 27 and be guided properly thereby. The head 26 has a pendent part or arm 33 which is vSecured to the endent part or arm 34'by va screw 35 or ot erwise. interposed between the arms or parts 33 and 34 and extends upward betweenithe heads 26 and 27 and normally forces one of the headsalong the other and normally causes the dog or tooth 29 to engage one of the slots of the bar 15 so as to be held to thebar-15in one of the adjustments of said stop; The head 26 is roughened, at 37, to provide a finger surface so that by pressing with the iinger on the head 26, the tooth 29 may be disengaged from-one of the slots 28. and the entire device moved along the bar 15, and on releasing the head 26 of any pressure by the finger, the device will be locked to the bar in any desired position..
A bracket 38 may be secured-by screws 39 or otherwise to the carriage bed 11 and may be provided with a projecting engaging portion or stop 4:0V 4arranged in the path of the pendent arms of any one'o'f the stops 21,22 and 23. The carriage may be moved along the bed 1l by the actionof the letter spacing and tension means inthe usual way which will `cause one of the stops, as the stop 21 for example, to engage .the projecting part40 ofthe bracket and hold the carriage against further movement. lever 16 is depressed to rock the bar 15 on its pivot, the pendent part of the stop 21 may be moved out of the path of the part 40 so that the carriageV may havefurther movement. carriage, the pendent arm ofthe .stop 22 will engage the part 40 and lock the carriage against further movement unless released by'wocking the bar 15 when the carriage can be moved farther backward and until the stop 23 engages said part 40, These stops may be of any desired number and may belocated at any'de'sired part of the machine to adapt the stopsfor tabu1`ating or other purposes, and said stops may be made to engage a part of the bracket 38 or any other desired part of the machine.
A fiat spring 36 is' the other.
If the arm or' On the return movement ofthe' In Fig. 5, the construction is exactly the same as either of the stops described. except that thespring 36 is dispensed with. In such case, the member 33 may be of spring metal to permit relative movement of Vthe members 24; and 25. 'A spiral spring instead .of aflat spring may be used and either kind of spring may be employed with a spring part 33 if desired.
